Healing The Health Care System: Summaries From The Department Of Health Policy Summer Seminar, David B. Nash, Nora Dowd Eisenhower, Rosemarie Greco, Deborah C. Meiris

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Editorial Introduction:
The disease management field continues to evolve. The range of chronic diseases treated has expanded to include such conditions as obesity and pain management, and the care continuum now encompasses wellness, prevention, and population health. One population that is an ideal candidate for our collective efforts is that of older adults. Global and national population projections reveal the impending staggering increase in the age 65+ cohort, which will cause a sharp increase in the demand for health care and other services due to such age-related issues as multiple chronic conditions, falls, and depression.

To begin to address these …

How To Prevent Perioperative Myocardial Injury: The Conundrum Continues, Jian-Zhong Sun, David Maguire Dec 2007

How To Prevent Perioperative Myocardial Injury: The Conundrum Continues, Jian-Zhong Sun, David Maguire

Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Perioperative myocardial injury (PMI) remains a major cause of perioperative morbidity and mortality but clinical strategies to prevent PMI are still uncertain.

METHODS AND RESULTS: We comprehensively searched PubMed for major research articles concerning clinical strategies to prevent PMI. The key findings are as follows: (1) the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association guideline update for perioperative cardiovascular evaluation for noncardiac surgery is very useful to stratify cardiac risk preoperatively; (2) cardiac troponin has emerged as a biomarker to diagnose postoperative PMI and to predict clinical outcomes; (3) coronary revascularization before noncardiac surgery probably would provide cardiac protection in …

Concave Pit-Containing Scaffold Surfaces Improve Stem Cell-Derived Osteoblast Performance And Lead To Significant Bone Tissue Formation., Antonio Graziano, Riccardo D'Aquino, Maria Gabriella Cusella-De Angelis, Gregorio Laino, Adriano Piattelli, Maurizio Pacifici, Alfredo De Rosa, Gianpaolo Papaccio

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Scaffold surface features are thought to be important regulators of stem cell performance and endurance in tissue engineering applications, but details about these fundamental aspects of stem cell biology remain largely unclear.

METHODOLOGY AND FINDINGS: In the present study, smooth clinical-grade lactide-coglyolic acid 85:15 (PLGA) scaffolds were carved as membranes and treated with NMP (N-metil-pyrrolidone) to create controlled subtractive pits or microcavities. Scanning electron and confocal microscopy revealed that the NMP-treated membranes contained: (i) large microcavities of 80-120 microm in diameter and 40-100 microm in depth, which we termed primary; and (ii) smaller microcavities of 10-20 microm in diameter …

Patient Advocacy Resource Manual, Jeff Hope Mar 2007

Patient Advocacy Resource Manual, Jeff Hope

Student Organizations

Patient Advocacy began as a freestanding group, formed by medical students who wanted to help homeless men and women with their psychosocial needs, such as finding a job, obtaining health insurance, and joining a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. Later, we merged with Jeff HOPE to form an organization that can address all of the needs of our patients. This combination of energies and talents has proven quite beneficial, especially because our patients often need services that are beyond the scope of what the Jeff HOPE medical clinic can provide. Thus, one of our most important responsibilities is to link …
