Using The Interprofessional Education Collaborative (Ipec) Core Competencies To Build A Microcredentialing Framework For Interprofessional Curriculum Development, Haley Fribance, Susan Meyer, Phd

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

We are developing a framework to 1) guide the development of a comprehensive interprofessional curriculum and 2) organize learning activities and assessments to enable student achievement of each domain outlined in the IPEC Core Competencies (IPEC, 2016). Within the framework, each of the four IPEC Core Competency domains represents a microcredential that could be earned by a student. An interprofessional curriculum built on a framework of microcredentials will reflect the four characteristics that define quality interprofessional education (IPE)—rationale, outcome-based goals, deliberate design, and assessment and evaluation (Barzansky et al., 2019). The design and implementation of this interprofessional microcredential system will …

Abdomen Actin’ Up: A Unique Presentation Of Disseminated Abdominal Actinomycosis, Arpana Parachuri, Md, Brianna Shinn, Md, Rino Sato, Md

The Medicine Forum

INTRODUCTION

Abdominal actinomycosis is a chronic, indolent disease characterized by nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, weight loss, fever, and abdominal pain. Actinomyces is a genus of fastidious, gram-positive, non-acid-fast, branching filamentous bacilli characterized by sulfur granules that is normally found in oral flora and inhabits the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Actinomyces infections are relatively rare, however when present, they have the ability to invade multiple organs and disseminate throughout multiple body cavities. Factors that increase the risk of developing actinomycosis include poor oral hygiene, alcoholism, and preexisting dental disease. Intrauterine devices (IUDs) also increase the risk of developing pelvic actinomycosis. Over …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Background While the need for interprofessional education (IPE) has been clearly elucidated, (Interprofessional Education Collaborative, 2016), one of the major barriers is the logistical challenge of meeting curricular requirements for all involved. The organization and time required in an already full schedule are often deterrents. Ideal opportunities meet specific program curricular requirements as well as enhancing interprofessional competencies. Interprofessional competencies include developing skills to teach other health care providers about profession-specific skills and enhancing communication across the professions (Bridges, 2011; Interprofessional Education Collaborative, 2016). Active learning techniques have been advocated for adult learners to promote motivation and engagement (Knowles, 1984), …

A Community College Interprofessional Nurse Managed Center Practice Model, Donna Meyer, Msn, Rn, Anef

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Lewis and Clark Community College (L&C) has initiated an innovative interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) model at its Family Health Clinic (FHC), a nurse managed center, located at the main campus in Godfrey, Illinois. The FHC previously operated successfully for seven years, and has exceeded the projected impact with the numbers of individuals served in the community. The project is innovative and distinctive in providing an IPCP model in that it is inter-institutional, with several of the participating practitioners from institutions other than L&C. The core leadership of the model remains with the nursing professionals at the FHC. It is important …

Occupational Chemical Exposures And Psychiatric Disorders, Mark L. Dembert, M.D., M.P.H.

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Occupational exposure to metals, solvents, or pesticides can produce disorders of behavior, thought, or mood which can easily be misdiagnosed as 'Junctional." Accurate diagnosis obtained with a relevant clinical history, psychiatric interview, physical examination, and indicated laboratory tests will enable the delivery of necessary medical treatment and concurrently prevent repeat exposure to a hazardous work environment. Published references and organizational sources in occupational medicine and industrial hygiene can beutilized by psychiatrists for determination of the dijferential diagnosis and confirmation of an occupational exposure; in addition, these references can aid in assessing the need for an environmental health hazard survey at …

Erosive Eosinophilic Esophagitis In Rumination Syndrome, Shawn S. Sidhu, James R. Rick Jul 2009

Erosive Eosinophilic Esophagitis In Rumination Syndrome, Shawn S. Sidhu, James R. Rick

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Rumination syndrome involves bringing up partially digested food into the pharynx voluntarily, followed by reswallowing or expelling. It was discovered in the 17th century; however, knowledge of the disorder has remained sparse until recently. Indeed, the first case of adult rumination in Japan was reported as recently as 2006. Due to this recent increase in awareness, notions about the disease have remained in a state of constant fluctuation. While first believed to be a disease of neurologically-impaired children between 3 and 8 months of age, it is now widely recognized as occurring in men and women of all ages and …
