One Land / One Ocean: Reactivate Coastal Commons In Urban Territory, Chengie Zhang Jun 2022

One Land / One Ocean: Reactivate Coastal Commons In Urban Territory, Chengie Zhang

Masters Theses

We all live in the same common -– the ocean common, sharing various common pool resources. With industrialization coming after capitalism, the resource regime is shifting and developing. The Blue Revolution and industrial aquaculture stand out as a strategy to efficiently gain resources to meet the population growth and the resource demands. However, it will reveal another form of cultural exploitation. People in the global south will become a labor resource for the global north and increase extreme coastal poverty brought by the depletion of mangroves for land and industrial places. In this book, I want to discuss the possibility …

Senders, Receivers, And Spillover Dynamics: Understanding Transformative Forces Of Aquaculture In The Marine Aquarium Trade, Bryce Risley Aug 2020

Senders, Receivers, And Spillover Dynamics: Understanding Transformative Forces Of Aquaculture In The Marine Aquarium Trade, Bryce Risley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Industry and academic conversations on aquaculture’s role in the marine aquarium trade are often centered on production advancements, biological and reproductive constraints of concerned species, and conservation deliverables and often overlook the possible socioeconomic consequences of aquaculture production. Due attention is yet to be spent on understanding broader stakeholder sentiment on aquaculture production and the toll it may have on specialized suppliers such as those in the Sri Lankan marine ornamental fishery. Utilizing a framework derived from Coupled Human and Natural Systems, research found suppling stakeholders predominantly unable to participate in aquaculture production due to various access limitations. When viewed …

Effects Of Commercial Diets On Growth Performances Of Juvenile Hybrid Grouper (Epinephelus Lanceolatus ♂ X E. Fuscoguttatus ♀) Reared Under Intensive Culture Conditions, Piyawut Mitrananda

Open Access Theses

Feed performance of hybrid grouper (Epinephelus lanceolatus ♂ x E. fuscoguttatus ♀) at 27.76±0.78 grams were evaluated. Fish were fed one control diet and three commercial diets for a duration of 42 days with 14-day sampling intervals. Experiment was performed in triplicates with 240 fish per treatment. Fish were stocked in 400-liter flow through tank with 2000% exchange of unfiltered seawater. Control treatment received previously frozen bait fish, Decapterus russelli. The three commercial diets have varying proximate compositions and price points and were obtained from three commercial fish feed producers. CD1 diet was imported from Japan at $2.7/kg with 50.8% …

Re-Tooling Marine Food Supply Resilience In A Climate Change Era: Some Needed Reforms, Robin Kundis Craig

Seattle University Law Review

Ocean fisheries and marine aquaculture are an important but often overlooked component of world food security. For example, of the seven billion (and counting) people on the planet, over one billion depend on fish as their primary source of protein, and fish is a primary source of protein (30 percent or more of protein consumed) in many countries around the world, including Japan, Greenland, Taiwan, Indonesia, several countries in Africa, and several South Pacific island nations. Marine fisheries and marine aquaculture have been subject to a number of stressors that can undermine world food security, including overfishing, habitat destruction, and …

The Western Australian Department of Fisheries is responsible for the management of aquaculture in WA and is committed to implementing ESD. These principles are contained within the objectives of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 and the Department is keen to demonstrate both to the Government and the broader community that these principles are being achieved.
