The Mekong River is a globally important river system, known for its unique flood pulse hydrology, ecological productivity, and biodiversity. Flooded forests provide critical terrestrial nutrient inputs and habitat to support aquatic species. However, the Mekong River is under threat from anthropogenic stressors, including deforestation from land cultivation and urbanization, and dam construction that inundates forests and encourages road development. This study investigated spatio-temporal patterns of deforestation in Cambodia and portions of neighboring Laos and Vietnam that form the Srepok-Sesan-Sekong watershed. Airborne laser scanning or lidar has now been used by archaeologists for twenty years, with many of the first applications relying on data acquired by public agencies seeking to establish baseline elevation maps, mainly in Europe and North America. More recently, several wide-area acquisitions have been designed and commissioned by archaeologists, the most extensive of which cover tropical forest environments in the Americas and Southeast Asia. Bats (Chiroptera) are often viewed negatively by the public. Negative public perceptions of bats may hinder efforts to conserve declining populations. In Belize, the presence of vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus and Diphylla ecaudata) exacerbates the potential for conflicts with humans because of the increased rabies transmission risks. To mitigate these risks, the Belize government provides farmers with assistance to trap and remove vampire bats. In June 2018, we surveyed farmers (n = 44) in and adjacent to the Vaca Forest Reserve in Belize to learn more about their attitudes, knowledge, and experiences with bats. This information may …

Indonesia’s 1999–2004 decentralization reforms created opportunities for land-use planning that reflected local conditions and local people’s needs. We report on seven years of work in the District of Malinau in Indonesian Borneo that attempted to reconnect government land-use plans to local people’s values, priorities, and practices. Four principles are proposed to support more interactive planning between government and local land users: Support local groups to make their local knowledge, experience, and aspirations more visible in formal land-use planning and decision making; create channels of communication, feedback, and transparency to support the adaptive capacities and accountability of district leadership and institutions; …

Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) provides a standardized detection-level survey of forest and tree characteristics for large forested areas. We have adopted FHM methods from this temperate-based program to tropical forests in the Eastern Arc Mountains (EAM) of Kenya and Tanzania. This paper reports the first assessment of trend data in the EAM over a period from 2001 to 2006. Growth and diversity statistics are presented for 11 forest plots in Ngangao Forest; only six (of 45) species constitute the predominance (68%) of basal area growth. Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd is reviewing the ability of small satellite platforms to add complementary capability to the presently defined Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) space segment, allowing the broadest possible set of user requirements to be met. A set of user-focused services has been compared with the instruments and measurement capabilities defined for the currently proposed Sentinel platforms. This comparison illustrated the challenges of using a few satellites, as in the current Sentinel scenario, carrying multiple instruments to serve the diverse needs of land, coastal, oceanic, emergency response and emergency management users.

Willingness-To-Pay For Information: Experimental Evidence On Red Meat Traceability For The Us, Canada, The U.K., And Japan, David L. Dickenson, Deevon Bailey

This research used Vickrey auctions to generate willingness-to-pay (WTP) data for red meat traceability and related product characteristics using comparable experimental auctions in the US, Canada, the UK, and Japan. The results show that subjects are willing to pay a nontrivial premium for traceability, but the same subjects show even higher WTP for traceability-provided characteristics like additional meat safety and humane animal treatment guarantees. The implication is that producers might be able to implement traceable meat systems profitably by tailoring the verifiable characteristics of the product to consumer preferences.

Traceable product systems provide a tool to track the inputs of a final good throughout the entire production chain. This tool can provide valuable information to consumers on verifiable characteristics of the product, can improve the speed of product recall, and can help identify areas of inefficiency in the product chain. Recent examples of traceable systems include those used in the diamond, lumber, and food industries. This article reports results from a case study on traceability using Vickrey auctions to generate willingness-to-pay (WTP) data for traceability and related product characteristics.
