Circadian Rhythm And Exercises: How Time Of Day Effects Physiological Variables Responsible For Exercise Performance, Chidozie C. Nwankwo
Circadian Rhythm And Exercises: How Time Of Day Effects Physiological Variables Responsible For Exercise Performance, Chidozie C. Nwankwo
2022 Spring Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
In contemporary physiology, the circadian rhythm influences more than the neurotransmitters melatonin and cortisol. Monitored from hypothalamic pacemakers and suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), metabolic and physiological structures are under a biomolecular schedule. Likewise, peripheral tissues are coordinated through the hormonal, autonomic, and behavior stimuli that direct the metabolic processes that occur in the skeletomuscular system. The purpose of the current study was to determine whether the time of day could significantly affect the metabolic response to an anaerobic capacity test. Subjects had weight, height, and body fat percentage (BF%) recorded before the Wingate Anaerobic Test. Resting blood lactic levels were documented …
Representations And Perceptions Of Sexual Pleasure In Undergraduate Anatomy And Physiology (A&P) Courses, Brenda Kucha Anak Ganeng
Representations And Perceptions Of Sexual Pleasure In Undergraduate Anatomy And Physiology (A&P) Courses, Brenda Kucha Anak Ganeng
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The World Health Organization defines sexual pleasure as an important part of positive sexual experiences and sexual health. Despite its importance, sexual pleasure is often omitted from sexual health programming and curricula. Undergraduate human anatomy and physiology (A&P) courses serve as avenues where students who intend to go into health care learn foundational knowledge about human body systems and health; however, to our knowledge, there has been no documentation of if and how A&P students learn about sexual pleasure. A&P textbooks serve as an important resource for curriculum design and learning. I sought to answer the following research question: How …

With the transition to virtual learning, some students are finding difficulty in adapting to the online environment where there is a lack of face-to-face interactions and physical infrastructure. Therefore, alternative strategies need to be implemented for students to gain the most value out of their online education. To better enrich the learning experience, I created educational activity booklets, a type of teaching-learning strategy, for students taking courses in human anatomy and physiology. These booklets contain visual aids, crossword puzzles, flow charts, questions, and other active-learning tools to reinforce lecture material. This project is divided into 13 booklets, with each encompassing …

The endocrine system is essential for it controls metabolism, reproduction, mood, growth, development, and many more functions of the body. Yet due to its vast functions it can be difficult to grasp and because most of the activities of the system are not seen, it can be difficult to visualize. To mitigate the difficulty of learning the endocrine system, information was collected from the Human Physiology course PowerPoints as well as various textbooks and lectures to create visually engaging educational videos for students. Specifically, two videos were created using iMovie and PowerPoint to cover a brief overview of the endocrine …

Undergraduate degree programs named “Physiology” have existed for over 50 yr. The number of programs and enrolled students have been growing since ~2005 (5, 9). There are many thousands of students currently enrolled in physiology pro- grams across the United States and indeed across the world. Despite the long history and current popularity of the physiol- ogy major, there is no coordinated plan articulated for the design, administration, or assessment of degree programs in physiology at the undergraduate level.
Although several professional societies have invested in under- graduate physiology education in various ways, none has under- taken the task of …

A significant threat in the medical field today is the rise of antibiotic resistance, which challenges physicians and can severely limit patient survival outcomes. Discovering new means of protecting the host against infection are therefore needed. Using the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans, we previously discovered that we could increase host survival during infection with the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa by simple supplementation with the branched chain amino acid leucine. Using genetics, we found that the nuclear hormone receptor NHR-114 mediated this pro-survival benefit of leucine supplementation. In an effort to understand the mechanism of NHR-114 function, we explored its spatial …

The Maillard reaction has garnered attention in a wide variety of industries in chemistry, including food science, textiles, and pharmaceuticals. Most recently, the Maillard reaction has become medically relevant, mediating the irreversible addition of sugars to proteins. This non-enzymatic post-translational modification, called glycation, leads to the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGE formation steadily increases with age and is known to mediate the pathogenesis of numerous agerelated diseases including cardiovascular, renal, ocular, and neurodegenerative diseases, especially in diabetic or uremic patients. The mechanisms of pathogenesis for these diseases, as well as the full extent of the impact of …

The Effects Of Passive, Active, And Beta-Alanine Supplemented Recovery On Blood Lactate During Anaerobic Exercise, Tracey Hampshire
The Effects Of Passive, Active, And Beta-Alanine Supplemented Recovery On Blood Lactate During Anaerobic Exercise, Tracey Hampshire
2015 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
It is widely shown through experimentation and knowledge of human physiology that an active recovery following high-intensity exercise removes lactic acid (BLa) more quickly than passive recovery. Some research suggests that Beta-Alanine (BA) supplementation can decrease BLa levels following supramaximal exercise. The purpose of this study was to assess whether passive, active, or Beta-Alanine supplemented recovery was more effective at lowering BLa accumulation anaerobic exercise. Nine subjects participated in this experiment (one subject was excluded). Each completed three sessions of active, passive, or supplemented Wingate protocols. Results were determined using SPSS (p < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between active and passive recovery (p = .292) or between BetaAlanine and placebo groups (p = .962). The results of this study indicated that there were no differences between BLa in passive and active recovery, and no benefits of Beta-Alanine supplementation on BLa accumulation following supramaximal exercise.
