The Theological Tradition Of The Orthodox Church In The Aspect Of The Formation Of Military Leadership In Ukraine, Olga Dobrodum, Andrii S. Zborchyi, Tetyana Kondratyuk-Antonova, Oleksandr L. Kolomiiets

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Analysis of the Orthodox theological tradition as a moral foundation for military leadership in the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the full-scale war. The study moves beyond pragmatic managerial models, exploring Orthodox categories such as service (diakonia), sacrifice, and spiritual warfare. Drawing on patristic heritage and modern theologians, the authors examine leadership motivation, the role of faith in professional resilience, and the integration of Orthodox anthropology into military training. Special emphasis is placed on the Orthodox Church of Ukraine's chaplaincy as a key mechanism for actualizing these values while addressing challenges like secularism and multiconfessionalism.

Christ: A Religious Priest? A Thomistic Approach, Damian Day Jun 2023

Christ: A Religious Priest? A Thomistic Approach, Damian Day

Theology Faculty Publications

The nature and value of the religious priesthood have often been questioned, including after Vatican II. John Paul II, however, claims that the religious priest ‘reproduces in his life the fullness of the mystery of Christ’. Examining Aquinas’s understanding of Christ’s total self-sacrifice provides a model that explains how. In this article, I present a Christological and Thomistic approach to the question by identifying Christ as a religious priest, highlighting one of Aquinas’s patristic sources (St Gregory the Great) and one of his greatest spiritual interpreters of modern times (Bl Columba Marmion). Because of his grace of headship, Christ contains …

Infinite Horizon: The Prairie Spirituality Of Ronald Rolheiser, Michael W. Higgins Aug 2014

Infinite Horizon: The Prairie Spirituality Of Ronald Rolheiser, Michael W. Higgins

Mission & Culture Publications

Ronald Rolheiser, president of the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio Texas (but a native of the Saskatchewan prairie), is one of the most popular Catholic spiritual writers and syndicated columnists at work today.

What some critics see as Rolheiser’s complacency, his supposedly uncritical embrace of modern secular society, is actually borne of his remarkable faith and confidence in God’s abiding presence and care. Like the philosopher Charles Taylor, a fellow Canadian and Catholic, Rolheiser is keenly aware that modern liberal values such as tolerance and benevolence, and especially respect for individual dignity and freedom, have deep Christian roots.

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

There is a plethora of statistics concerning how many un-churched people there are in the United States and the socioeconomic ladder does not discriminate who fits this lost category. Yet, the concern of this project deals with the gang member, drug dealer, drug users, pimps and prostitutes. The intent is to take outreach to the street through cook outs, Holy block parties, street revivals and the like. The rationale of this project is to show how one can reach, teach and keep this group of people, the potential dangers, and positive consequences associated with it. The potential value of this …

Mission Spirituality And Authentic Discipleship, Wonsuk Ma, Kenneth R. Ross Jan 2013

Mission Spirituality And Authentic Discipleship, Wonsuk Ma, Kenneth R. Ross

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

This book argues for the primacy of spirituality in the practice of mission. Since God is the primary agent of mission and God works through the power of the Holy Spirit, it is through openness to the Spirit that mission finds its true character and has its authentic impact. This is demonstrated today particularly by movements of Christian faith in the global south which carry the good news to the heart of communities in every part of the world. Originating in the Edinburgh 2010 mission study project, the essays assembled in this volume show that today there is a renewal …

Maximizing The Sermonic Moment At Adaville Baptist Church Of Spindale, North Carolina, Calvin Ray Sayles

Doctor of Ministry Projects

The goal of this study was to present the most effective weekly sermon that is fresh, clear, interesting, relevant and life-changing for those that hear it. Congregational feedback was gathered over four weeks, through surveys, biometrics captured on film, and simultaneous sermon feedback. Adjustments, based on the feedback gathered during the first four weeks, were utilized in sermons during two additional weeks. The desired outcome was that the sermonic moment will be meaningful to the congregation, help them to internalize God's desires and expectations for His people, and contribute to the transformation of His children into Christ-likeness.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), multiple sclerosis (MS), and systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus) are incurable autoimmune diseases affecting a growing number of people in the U.S. Women typically receive medical care for the physical effects of these diseases, but psychospiritual dimensions of illness experiences are often neglected. Common autoimmune illness experiences include delayed diagnosis; chronic pain, fatigue, depression; and liminality (being neither healthy nor sick). Women with RA, MS, and lupus also experience ongoing losses (which may be disenfranchised), such as losses of identity, relationships, self-agency, and spiritual beliefs and practices. As a result of ongoing experiences of suffering and loss, women …

Roman Catholicism: Theology And Colonization, G. Scott Davis Jan 2004

Roman Catholicism: Theology And Colonization, G. Scott Davis

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

The Catholic tradition in the Latin West grew up on the foundations laid by Rome. It accepted as fact the urban establishments that had started as colonial settlements and the need for such settlements to safeguard the imperial order. Thus in Catholic religious thought colonization and colonialism have no independent status; they are matters for legal and political reflection. Nonetheless, Catholic moral theology, particularly as it dealt with mission and conquest, had much to say about the activities that made colonization possible.

The Relationship Of Saint Vincent And Saint Louise From His Perspective: A Personal And Theological Inquiry, Hugh O'Donnell

Vincentian Studies

Vincent de Paul related to Louise de Marillac as a spiritual director, a collaborator, and a close friend. He helped her to accept her suffering and to trust Providence and herself. United by their love of God and their desire to serve the poor, they were equals in their collaboration with the Confraternities of Charity and the Daughters of Charity. He relied on her good judgment and organizational abilities. They appreciated how they complemented each other and saw their friendship as existing in God. Although there were two years of strain in their relationship over differences regarding the Daughters of …
