A Qualitative Descriptive Study Of Secular And Christian-Based Correctional Operations: Exploring The Impact On Recidivism, Reintegration, And Spiritual Transformation, Cullen B. Burch
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This qualitative descriptive study examines the effectiveness of secular versus Christian-based correctional programs in reducing recidivism among offenders and enhancing reintegration outcomes. The primary purpose is to explore perceived limitations of secular correctional methodologies, given observed challenges such as rising recidivism and limited offender transformation. In contrast, Christian-based programs, grounded in biblical principles and spiritual transformation, are posited to foster meaningful change among offenders. The study focuses on the perspectives of formerly incarcerated individuals who participated in secular and faith-based initiatives while incarcerated in Texas. Data collection is exclusively qualitative, involving semi-structured interviews with these formerly incarcerated individuals and a …

As a group we were tasked with creating a digitally formatted zine that draws comparisons between our own culture living in Texas and the culture of our peers at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand. Our group chose to illustrate the similarities of the livestock industries that are prevalent in our respective home locations. For Texas, we explored the cattle industry and the cowboy lifestyle. For New Zealand, we explored the sheep farming industry and the native Maori culture of the nation. We also highlighted the ways in which media has altered or projected these cultural images (i.e. …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Crossing Borders: Analyzing the Factors Contributing to Healthcare and Reproductive Preferences Among Residents of the Texas-Mexico Border explores the complexities of healthcare access and utilization among border residents, particularly in the context of reproductive health. Through qualitative analysis of focus group discussions with promotoras - community health workers - this study identifies key factors influencing cross-border healthcare decisions, including economic barriers, cultural influences, and perceptions of quality. The findings reveal that high costs and limited insurance coverage in the U.S. drive many individuals to seek affordable healthcare and medications in Mexico, where pharmacies provide immediate, low-cost services without the need …

Objectives. To identify appropriate interventions to prevent injury, we conducted a qualitative study among commercial shrimp fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico.
Methods. Using qualitative and participatory research methods, including interviews, photovoice, and workplace observations in southeast Texas and the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, we examined the social‒structural dimensions that contribute to physical and psychological injury.
Results. We found that multiple layers of vulnerability and danger exist among shrimpers with interacting themes: (1) recognizing risk, (2) precarious employment, and (3) psychological distress.
Conclusions. Our results add to the growing body of knowledge that emphasizes the negative health impacts of …

Hustle In H-Town: Hip Hop Entrepreneurialism In Houston, Brittany L. Long
Hustle In H-Town: Hip Hop Entrepreneurialism In Houston, Brittany L. Long
Journal of Hip Hop Studies
Imagine a sprawling, overheated American megalopolis that epitomizes diversity and segregation in one of the world’s youngest countries. Despite Houston’s history of structural racism and segregation, Houston Hip Hop entrepreneurs built communities and created storied businesses that culminate in a sense of local pride and Hip Hop identity that has not been replicated in the same manner in any other city. An examination of thought-provoking existing scholarship about the Hip Hop South and Hip Hop in Houston, as well as an examination of existing and collected primary sources (interviews) allow me to demonstrate two things: Hip Hop entrepreneurialism is a …

Cracked Cans, Bent Wire: Dating Historical Metal At Biry/Ahr House, Castroville, Texas, Maggie Logan
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
In this work I investigate changes in historical metal consumption practices over time at Biry/Ahr House, a frontier settlement in Castroville, Texas. Alsatian immigrants settled this site in Medina County as part of the empresario system of the 1840s. Biry/Ahr House was home to two families, the Birys (1844-1921) and the Groff/Tschirharts (1921-1972). Using vibrant materialism, consumerism, and collections-based research, I address the ways in which metal usage changed over time at the site as well as the factors behind these changes. I also consider the role that Alsatian heritage has played in the transformation of Biry/Ahr House from a …
German And Mexican Music In Central Texas: Historical Connections And Present Possibilities, Amy Aline Beckman
German And Mexican Music In Central Texas: Historical Connections And Present Possibilities, Amy Aline Beckman
Masters Theses
German and Mexican music have a shared musical ancestry due to immigrants interacting since the late 1800s in central Texas. Comparing these genres reveals both commonalities and distinctions regarding style, orchestration, and thematic material. The differences between the genres create cultural boundaries reflecting nationalism that sometimes reinforces racial tension, while the commonalities are opportunities for empathy and open-mindedness through the globalization that occurs from shared musical experiences. While the historical connections between Germans and Mexicans in Central Texas are well-documented, the present-day status and effects of these connections have not been researched thoroughly. This project builds cultural profiles of both …

Farmers and entomologists have all experimented with various methods to find the best way to defeat the United States' boll weevil. The techniques themselves, while expansive, can be examined within the scope of the years that they were used. This provides an exciting insight into how cotton pest management became more complex as the decades moved on and revealed how the science of cotton pest management evolved to deal with the boll weevil and other future cotton threats.

Extreme heat is the deadliest weather hazard in the U.S. Flooding is the second worst, and flash flooding is the deadliest form of flooding. The nature of these flood deaths contains a human element that deserves greater study. Since 2004, the National Weather Service has attempted to educate the public with its slogan, ``Turn Around Don’t Drown". Vehicle related mortality rates in Texas since 1996 were examined to answer the question of whether ``Turn Around Don’t Drown" has been effective. The slogan has a large footprint on the social media platform Twitter, with most of the Tweets coming from private …
