The Zuni Pueblo: Connections Through Student Inquiry Projects, Debra A. Giambo

i.e.: inquiry in education

In a university course on the Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico, students engaged in a scaffolded inquiry project to consider connections between individual major areas of study or intended career paths and the Zuni Pueblo. Students completed project tasks prior to, during, and after the trip, and analyzed information gathered to answer their inquiry questions. Topics of interest were shared with the Zuni Tribal Council and a Zuni community partner for discussion and input. After completion, projects were shared with the class, the Tribal Council, a Zuni community partner, and the university community. This paper will (1) explain the organization, …

Appreciative Inquiry For A Supportive Climate, Ann Liao Apr 2024

Appreciative Inquiry For A Supportive Climate, Ann Liao

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Most of the nonprofit organizations rely heavily on volunteers. In a service-learning course that works with nonprofit community partners, it is important to foster a supportive climate. Traditional problem-solving procedures typically involve identifying a problem, brainstorming for possible solutions, evaluating possible solutions, and implementation. With positive framing, a traditional problem-solving approach could be transformed by the method of appreciative inquiry. Traditional problem-solving approach is weaknesses-based, and appreciative inquiry is strengths-based. This paper demonstrates that appreciative inquiry is more effective in building a supportive climate when working with nonprofit community partners. Appreciative inquiry starts with discovering the successes of an organization, …

Abstract: The INTO LIGHT California project created a venue to rescue the living stories of those who died from drug overdose and poisonings through interviews, portraiture, a museum exhibition and community involvement to reduce the impact of the silencing stigma of substance abuse. In partnership with two separate university programs alongside a not-for-profit national organization, the project created opportunities for forty bereaved family to be interviewed by graduate counseling students using innovative narrative counseling practices to shine light on deaths that are often relegated to the shadows of grief.

A Critical Inquiry Exploring The Relationship Between Critical Consciousness And Community Engagement Educators, Carol Difalco Jan 2024

A Critical Inquiry Exploring The Relationship Between Critical Consciousness And Community Engagement Educators, Carol Difalco

Counseling and Psychology Dissertations

Community engagement programs are shaped by the educators who facilitate them. Due to a curtailed critical consciousness, such programs are not always sensitive to the negative implications for the communities they are attempting to support. Guided by critical ethnographic and interpretive phenomenological analysis, this study examines how educators perceive their relationship with critical consciousness, its impact on their community engagement initiatives, and what we can learn from educators using community engagement to work towards social justice issues. As expected, results from the participants revealed varying awareness and understanding of how structural power and institutional oppression impact community engagement initiatives. Some …

Engaging Students In Community, Sheena Steckl Nov 2023

Engaging Students In Community, Sheena Steckl

Celebration of Teaching

Vincent Tinto’s Schema for Dropout From College, posits “it is the individual's integration into the academic and social systems of the college that most directly relates to his continuance in that college” (96). I have sought to improve student integration through group-centric, community-engaged learning classes, where we spend nearly half our class time serving in the community.

These community-engaged learning courses entail a fair amount of group work. Students are assigned in groups that serve together, do in-class group assignments together, and work on multifaceted group projects. Their time spent outside the classroom serving together, be it driving to …

Educational Practices in Kinesiology

The purpose of this resource is to allow university educators to implement an experiential-learning project in which students act as leaders of behavior change. Specifically, kinesiology students are paired with “clients” to engage with outside of the classroom and tasked with helping the clients achieve their physical activity goals. This semester-long behavior change project can be used in classes delivered in online, in-person, or hybrid formats. It is estimated that two hours are required for initial project instructions and set-up, with about 12 additional hours throughout the semester for continuous instruction, review, discussion, and presentation. Students are expected to benefit …

The Radical Relationality Of Complex Partnerships: Community-Member Experiences In Critical Community-Based Learning, Amie Riley Aug 2023

The Radical Relationality Of Complex Partnerships: Community-Member Experiences In Critical Community-Based Learning, Amie Riley

Dissertations and Theses

Through a radical relationality within the social-ecological systems that sustain us, critical community-based learning (CBL) in higher education offers a praxis for engaging the demanding pedagogical and community challenges we face. When CBL is implemented as both a critical and sustainability pedagogy, as a strategy for social change, the relationships created by CBL partnerships have the potential to generate transformational outcomes for all partnership agents. Using a critical complexity theoretical framework, a bricolage of complexity science and critical theory, this critical qualitative study sought to understand the systemic patterns and behaviors of a community-based learning partnership by elevating community-member voices. …

Creating A Nontraditional Wellness Blog, Tawni M. Rising

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

This service learning project researched sources of shame humans feel about their bodies. So often what we see in the media is curated, seemingly perfect, and fake. I created a non-traditional wellness blog and website called tawnsclaimtoshame.com where I used my background in psychology, biology, anatomy, as well as research, to debunk how culture and the media defines the perfect body. The link for my blog was shared on multiple social media platforms and accessed by many different stakeholders. My blog addresses eating disorders, diet culture, the medicalization of fatness, implicit biases about weight, disparities in sex education, the flaws …

A Blog On Building A Backyard Garden, Carrie N. Mccashland

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

My capstone project involved building a backyard garden and writing a blog to include my innovative approach to gardening. In the past few years, there have been disruptions in the food supply chain and the price of food has skyrocketed due to inflation. I can teach people how to grow food their family will enjoy in their own backyard. Fewer people will have to depend on the food provided in the grocery store. People will have a greater knowledge of what they are eating and how it was made. Those people who live in more rural areas will not have …

Fostering Reading: Supporting Foster Children Through Virtual Learning, Evette Harrell, Leah Washburn-Moses Jan 2023

Fostering Reading: Supporting Foster Children Through Virtual Learning, Evette Harrell, Leah Washburn-Moses

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Professional literature presents evidence that foster care agencies, foster parents, and educators are unprepared to meet the distinctive educational needs of foster youth. Although there is a general lack of evidence on specific interventions developed for foster youth, some studies have addressed the impact of tutoring. This paper studies the impact of a pilot program that paired 15 teacher candidates with 15 foster youth for virtual reading tutoring as part of a college course. Data were collected from youth, parents, and teacher candidates through surveys and focus groups. The results of this study suggested that the tutoring relationship produced several …

Service Learning- It’S Elementary! Teacher Initiated Service Learning At An Independent School, Kate Burton Dec 2022

Service Learning- It’S Elementary! Teacher Initiated Service Learning At An Independent School, Kate Burton

Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations

Service learning involves specific and intentional academic and learning goals that are achieved through service to a community and reflection. Often the responsibility for ensuring that service learning in schools is meaningful and successful falls to teacher leaders with little specific training on organizing such efforts. This research inquiry examined the experiences of nontraditional teacher leaders and the choices they made while designing and implementing service learning projects for their elementary students. This research also examined the setting and structures that were in place to facilitate these service learning initiatives. Data analysis found the themes of ties to the curriculum, …

Countering The Service-Learning Privilege Problem Through Critical Communication Pedagogy And Critical Assessment, David H. Kahl Jr., Ahmet Atay, Najla G. Amundson Oct 2022

Countering The Service-Learning Privilege Problem Through Critical Communication Pedagogy And Critical Assessment, David H. Kahl Jr., Ahmet Atay, Najla G. Amundson

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

Because the communication discipline values action, civility, and service, it has placed emphasis on the integration of service-learning in its courses. Service-learning has the potential to bridge the gap between the classroom and the community by employing social justice pedagogy–activism that takes critical learning to sites of hegemony. However, service-learning can also promote the unintended side effect of entrenching beliefs about privilege. Therefore, we advocate for a critical service-learning to be facilitated through a critical communication pedagogy (CCP) framework, which emphasizes the recognition and response to hegemony that students encounter. Such an approach employs critical assessment, a means by which …

Participating in this project brought awareness to high schoolers about those in the community who are shut-ins. The cards are intended to bring joy and brighten the day to the Meals on Wheels recipients. Three keywords that represent my project are volunteer work, community, and service learning.

Differences Aside, Dzanela Husic Oct 2022

Differences Aside, Dzanela Husic

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

The capstone project concerns cultural diversity at an elementary school, specifically at a 2nd-grade level. I interviewed my daughter and her teacher for my research. I involved my daughter in the book because she comes from a different culture and is being raised in another. She is the perfect example for my project because she has a cultural background, and she is not aware that people around her don't recognize that culture. I interviewed her teacher because she is emotionally intelligent and recognizes that cultural awareness is needed in classroom settings. Part of my research involved reading extensive literature about …

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

This service learning project researched food sustainability and food insecurity issues with a focus on the local Hispanic community. Often the available resources to combat food insecurity do not get to the communities that need them the most due to language barriers and accessibility of information. I created a newsletter in English and Spanish and posted it on my website TelaWeb.Org. The link for the website was shared through social media, and provided to various stakeholders involved in the project to share on their own social media pages or websites. This newsletter addresses the value of food sustainability, provides information …
