Transdisciplinary Collaboration Of Healthcare Professionals And The Emotional Connectedness With Working With Patients Coping With Death And Dying, Princess Nguyen, Lindsay Gietzen
Pacific Journal of Health
Abstract
Purpose: This study explores how an integrated approach to care for patients and families by transdisciplinary healthcare teams provides opportunities for a patient-centered care approach to support quality of life throughout one's chronic illness and at the end-of-life. Discussions and conversations about impending death or dying are often challenging and a complex task for healthcare professionals in whatever settings. While there is an understanding of aspects of collaborative care and transitions and processes to support patients and families about how to cope and communicate about death and dying, it is essential to recognize how best to support end-of-life care …

The Use Of Art Therapy On Children With Life-Limiting Conditions, Karissa K. Schillinger
Counselor Education Capstones
Art therapy is a growing therapeutic technique that is noninvasive. The present literature review sets out to determine what effect art therapy has on children with life-limiting conditions. This author completed a literature review that involved analyzing ten research studies on a variety of youth populations. Studies were found about children with cancer, a child with cerebral palsy and a child with a severe neurological disorder. Zero incidences of harm were found when using art therapy. However, the literature was complicated by the type of art therapy provided, small sample sizes, varying duration of treatment, lack of control groups, lack …
Improving Quality Of Life And Connection Amongst Pediatric Oncology Patients And Their Families Through Art Therapy: A Literature Review, Gabby Johnson
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This literature review seeks to answer the question of how art therapy can be used to improve quality of life and connection between pediatric cancer patients and their families.
This literature review also aims to connect art therapy with traditional medical interventions for pediatric cancer patients as a way to create more integrated and supportive care modality that children and their families can benefit from. With a significant amount of children and families being affected by cancer in the world today, it is important to not only focus on the physical health aspects, but the intersection of mental health as …

Palliative Care And Quality Of Life Improvement: A Benchmark Study, Rebecca Daniels
MSN Capstone Projects
This project provides an overview of the standard and regular implementation of palliative care versus early implementation of palliative care in patients with chronic or terminal illnesses. Palliative care is an essential component of healthcare that focuses on improving the quality of life and providing support to patients through holistic elements to patients and their families facing chronic and terminal illnesses. With evidence-based research, many articles have been published with implementation of early palliative care showing improvement in patient and even caregiver quality of life. This project includes evidence gathered from mixed methods of systematic review of existing literature, randomized …
Impact Of The Built Environment On The End-Of-Life Journey, Kelechi Akwazie
Impact Of The Built Environment On The End-Of-Life Journey, Kelechi Akwazie
Masters in Architecture Program: Theses
Several research studies and personal anecdotes show that home-based hospice care patients report better quality of life than their inpatient care counterparts – suggesting that the location of care/built environment is a critical component of hospice care. As a result, other research studies have attempted to provide evidence-based design recommendations for inpatient hospice facilities; however, several of these recommendations either conflict with each other or are vaguely prescribed – which may dull any attempts to implement them.
This literature review takes a unique approach to the provision of evidence-based design recommendations for inpatient hospice facilities by holistically assessing hospice care, …
The Benefits Of Art Therapy On Stress And Anxiety Of Oncology Patients During Treatment, Helen Shiepe
The Benefits Of Art Therapy On Stress And Anxiety Of Oncology Patients During Treatment, Helen Shiepe
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Within the last ten years research on art therapy and its positive impact on oncology patients’ stress and anxiety during treatment has been minimal. Oncology patients whether they are children or adults when diagnosed experience similar reactions due to their diagnosis, treatment, and in some cases end of life care. The current question is whether or not art therapy does have a positive impact on decreasing the stress and anxiety with oncology patients while undergoing treatment. Deane, Fitch & Carmen (2000), discussed art therapy as a healing art that is “intended to integrate physical, emotional, and spiritual care by facilitating …

Home Healthcare Nurse Knowledge Of Palliative Care And Hospice: A Quality Improvement Project, Alyse Jewel Mcgarraugh
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This DNP project's objective was to educate home healthcare (HHC) nurses about palliative care/hospice (PC/H) benefits so they can recommend a referral if they believe it would enhance the patient's and family's quality of life. The purpose of the study was to determine if providing additional education to HHC nurses improves their perceptions of palliative care and hospice knowledge. The HHC nurses at one organization were provided with an information sheet, a consent form, demographic inquiries, and a pre-survey and instructed to review an evidence-based educational module. Upon completion of the module, participants were requested to complete a post-survey. After …

A Telehealth Palliative Care Objective Structured Clinical Examination, Lindsey Q. Mcintyre
Dissertations
Problem: Palliative care is a service focused on symptom management and improved quality of life for persons with serious or chronic illnesses and is widely underutilized. Although advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) possess a unique skillset to contribute to palliative care, there is minimal reporting on palliative care training for this professional group. The purpose of this clinical scholarship project was to implement the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) online training program for APRN students in the BSN-DNP program and evaluate its effect on student performance during a telehealth objective structured clinical examination (OSCE).
Methods: An observational, descriptive …

Benefits Of Palliative Care In The Intensive Care Unit, Stephen Swenson, Stephen M. Swenson
Nursing Masters Papers
Abstract
The use of palliative care is often overlooked until the terminal phase of serious illness when life-prolonging interventions are deemed futile and death is considered imminent.
Alongside the well regarded Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care (National Coalition for Hospice and Palliative Care, 2018), numerous critical care societies including the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (Medina & Puntillo, 2006), American College of Critical Care Medicine (Davidson et al., 2008), American College of Chest Physicians (Selecky et al., 2005), American College of Surgeons (2017), and the American Thoracic Society (Lanken et al., 2007) have each published individual policies highlighting …
Predictors Of Cancer Caregiver Depression Symptomatology, Henry R. Rivera
Predictors Of Cancer Caregiver Depression Symptomatology, Henry R. Rivera
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While the duration of the cancer illness may be shorter than that of other serious diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, cancer caregivers provide many more hours of care during a week. Research directed at the intensive experience of caregiving of hospice cancer patients is needed as there is limited research of predictors of hospice cancer caregiver depression symptomatology. The purpose of the study was to examine predictors of depression symptomatology in caregivers of hospice cancer patients. A secondary analysis was conducted using baseline assessment data of patients and caregivers from a larger study of patient/caregiver dyads from two large hospices …
