Evolution Of The Book Cliffs Dryland Escarpment In Central Utah - Establishing Rates And Testing Models Of Escarpment Retreat, Nicholas R. Mccarroll Dec 2019

Evolution Of The Book Cliffs Dryland Escarpment In Central Utah - Establishing Rates And Testing Models Of Escarpment Retreat, Nicholas R. Mccarroll

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the earliest explorations of the Colorado Plateau, geologists have suspected that cliffs are retreating back laterally. Clarence Dutton envisioned “the beds thus dissolving edge wise until after the lapse of millions of centuries their terminal cliffs stand a hundred miles or more back from their original position” when he wrote about the landscape in 1882. While many geologic studies have determined how fast rivers cut down through the Plateau, only a few studies have calculated how quickly cliffs retreat laterally, and geologists have been arguing since the 1940’s what exactly drives cliffs to retreat in the first place. We …

Preliminary Sedimentology And Stratigraphy Of The Enigmatic Middle Lake Beds Succession (Pleistocene?) In The Rukwa Rift Basin, Tanzania, Cassy Mtelela May 2018

Preliminary Sedimentology And Stratigraphy Of The Enigmatic Middle Lake Beds Succession (Pleistocene?) In The Rukwa Rift Basin, Tanzania, Cassy Mtelela

Tanzania Journal of Science

This paper presents sedimentology and stratigraphic overview of a series of previously unrecognized lithostratigraphic unit in the Rukwa Rift Basin, Tanzania. Based on the cross-cutting relationship and pilot detrital zircon geochronology, these isolated, enigmatic strata are herein informally termed the middle Lake Beds (mLB). Facies analysis reveals that the mLB units were deposited within a complex array of depositional environments, ranging from alluvial to fluvial channels, floodplains and shallow lakes.  The mLB are characterised herein as isolated outcrop exposures with uncertain age relationships, but which can be divided into five distinctive lithostratigraphic units herein identified as informal members (A-E). These …

Pleistocene Deposits In The Southern Egyptian Sahara: Lithostratigraphic Relationships Of Sediments And Landscape Dynamics At Bir Tarfawi, Christopher L. Hill, Romuald Schild Jun 2017

Pleistocene Deposits In The Southern Egyptian Sahara: Lithostratigraphic Relationships Of Sediments And Landscape Dynamics At Bir Tarfawi, Christopher L. Hill, Romuald Schild

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The sedimentological and lithostratigraphic record from north-central Bir Tarfawi documents the presence of Pleistocene basin-fill deposits. Three topographic basins were created as a result of deflation during climate episodes associated with lowering of the local groundwater table. In each case, the three deflational basins or topographic depressions were subsequently filled with sediments; these basin aggradations coincided with changes from arid climate conditions to wetter conditions and a rise in the groundwater table. The oldest and highest sedimentary remnant is associated with Acheulian artifacts and may reflect spring-fed pond and marsh conditions during a Middle Pleistocene wet climate episode. Lithofacies for …

© 2015 Elsevier B.V. The Mississippi River fluvial-marine sediment-dispersal system (MRS) has become the focus of renewed research during the past decade, driven by the recognition that the channel, alluvial valley, delta, and offshore regions are critical components of North American economic and ecological networks. This renaissance follows and builds on over a century of intense engineering and geological study, and was sparked by the catastrophic Gulf of Mexico 2005 hurricane season, the 2010 Deep Water Horizon oil spill, and the newly recognized utility of source-to-sink concepts in hydrocarbon exploration and production. With this paper, we consider influences on the …

The Geologic Implications Of The Factors That Affected Relative Sea-Level Positions In South Carolina During The Pleistocene And The Associated Preserved High-Stand Deposits, William Richardson Doar Iii Dec 2014

The Geologic Implications Of The Factors That Affected Relative Sea-Level Positions In South Carolina During The Pleistocene And The Associated Preserved High-Stand Deposits, William Richardson Doar Iii

Theses and Dissertations

This work utilizes the current understanding of South Carolina geology to provide a stratigraphic review of the late-Pliocene and Pleistocene marine deposits. Almost two centuries of recorded geological study includes geomorphic and stratigraphic units that were described, proposed, revised, abandoned, and revived. Along with the history of the age assignments, changes in geological time scales, and the changes in the understanding of geological concepts, this review is necessary because two concurrent and conflicting stratigraphies exist for late-Pliocene and Pleistocene marine sediments that record multiple sea-level transgressions that were more often destructive than constructive. The result, when tested against existing geological …

Late Cenozoic Oscillations Of Antarctic Ice Sheets Revealed By Provenance Of Basement Clasts And Grain Detrital Modes In Andrill Core And-1b, Franco M. Talarico, Robert M. Mckay, Ross D. Powell, Sonia Sandroni, Tim Naish Jan 2011

Late Cenozoic Oscillations Of Antarctic Ice Sheets Revealed By Provenance Of Basement Clasts And Grain Detrital Modes In Andrill Core And-1b, Franco M. Talarico, Robert M. Mckay, Ross D. Powell, Sonia Sandroni, Tim Naish

ANDRILL Research and Publications

Petrological investigations of the sand fraction and of granule- to cobble-sized clasts in the Plio-Pleistocene sedimentary cycles of the AND-1B drill core at the NW edge of the Ross Ice Shelf (McMurdo Sound) highlight significant down-core modal and compositional variations. These variations provide: (i) direct information about potential source regions during both glacial maxima and minima; and (ii) evidence of an evolving provenance, documented by long-term shifts in compositional patterns that can be interpreted as reflecting variations in ice volume and ice sheet thermal regimes and changes in paleogeography related to the emergence of several volcanic centers during the deposition …

Petrogenesis And Geochemistry Of Pleistocene And Pliocene Basalt Flows Of The Pine Valley Volcanic Field, Utah And Their Relationship To The Tectonics Of The Utah Transition Zone, Matthew Faust Jan 2005

Petrogenesis And Geochemistry Of Pleistocene And Pliocene Basalt Flows Of The Pine Valley Volcanic Field, Utah And Their Relationship To The Tectonics Of The Utah Transition Zone, Matthew Faust

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Pine Valley Volcanic Field in southwestern Utah consists of at least 24 mafic lava flows and 10 vents. Eruptions have spanned the past 2.4 m.y. The youngest eruptions at the Snow Canyon and Diamond Valley cones occurred between 1 and 20 ka. Lava flows range in composition from basalt to andesite, and include both alkaline and subalkaline rocks throughout the field. Trace element abundances for the youngest lavas show both oceanic island basalt (OIB) and mid-oceanic ridge basalt (MORB) components in their source. Sr and Nd isotopic ratios exhibit evolved values, spanning a large range from epsilon Nd of …

Pleistocene Formations In Indiana, William J. Wayne Jan 1963

Pleistocene Formations In Indiana, William J. Wayne

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The system of stratigraphic classification used in North America for all sedimentary rock units except nonmarine deposits of the Pleistocene Series established groups, formations, and smaller units based on objectively determined characteristics of the rocks and not on geomorphology or subjective features, such as geologic time. Not all students of the nonmarine Pleistocene have kept these two kinds of units distinct from each other. The Pleistocene sediments of Indiana and the surrounding States are continental in origin rather than marine, and thus they show far less lithologic homogeneity than sediments and rocks of marine origin. Nevertheless, these Pleistocene sediments can …
