Summoning Models Of “Decolonization”: Performances Of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’S Historical Poetry In Contemporary Pakistan, Muhammad Z. Abro Apr 2026

Summoning Models Of “Decolonization”: Performances Of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’S Historical Poetry In Contemporary Pakistan, Muhammad Z. Abro

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation examines how Shia communities in Sindh, Pakistan, mobilize the poetry of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai as counter-history within a postcolonial order that folds sectarian difference into homogenized national culture. In dominant state and literary discourse, Latif is cast as a universal Sufi poet whose spirituality transcends doctrinal division and secures Sindhi and Pakistani belonging. The performances studied here place pressure on that settlement by treating the Risalo as a medium through which Karbala remains historically present. Drawing on three years of ethnographic fieldwork at the shrine of Shah Abdul Latif in Bhitshah and related sites in Sindh, the …

Imagination, Performance, Expression: Unraveling Global Pakistani Identity, Omaer Naeem May 2024

Imagination, Performance, Expression: Unraveling Global Pakistani Identity, Omaer Naeem

Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses

Expressions of Pakistani identity are presently being flattened out by both the state and global West, dominantly being explored through religion. This project argues that gender is used domestically and internationally to present a multifaceted resistance to the state’s idea of the national identity. This project interrogates the creation of global Pakistani identity through examining the historical antecedents in imagining Pakistan, resistance to the state’s identity- construction process demonstrated in performing Pakistan, and transnational expressions of identity. This project argues that gender, while leveraged by the state in a top-down construction of national identity, has been used bottom-up to reconfigure …

Pakistan And The Steam Economy : Part - I, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Pakistan is currently in the midst of political upheaval and economic uncertainties. It may appear odd that anyone would be interested at this juncture in reading about the long-term development path of the country. However, it must be emphatically submitted that in our pursuit of immediate and short-term relief and gratification we have been pursuing a band aid fix-it-now approach postponing and neglecting the serious deep-rooted structural problems that are indeed the main cause of oursecular economic decline and frequent economic crises. It is a clarion call for our leaders and policymakers to think for a moment about the damage …

"Colonization" is by far the most sophisticated word for the attempts made to make a society financially broke and culturally orphaned. My work is a product of thoughts that occur in the midst of cultural and linguistic existential crises left by the white man's burden . My focus on Pakistani society goes beyond its relevance as the culture I call home; my focus is intended to provide a microscopic view of how culture, traditions, and norms often work in concert to dictate the course of history and the future of nations. Ahmadiyya And Secularism: Religious Persecution At Home Affects Endorsement For Secular Values In Canada, Rana Tanveer Sep 2020

Ahmadiyya And Secularism: Religious Persecution At Home Affects Endorsement For Secular Values In Canada, Rana Tanveer

Religion and Culture Major Research Papers

Contrary to the common notion that Muslims are fundamentalist, anti-modern, and against Western norms (hence their opposition to secularism), this paper argues that Muslims are not homogeneous. Therefore, their approach to secularism is not a matter of their assumed fixed religiosity. One recognises that, after seeing the Ahmadiyya Muslim community endorsing secular values in Canada, the assumption that Muslims coming to the West are anti-secular is misleading. The community’s persecution and loss of religious identity in Pakistan have moderated their approach toward secularism. To prove the hypothesis, Ahmadiyya teachings, addresses by living caliphs, and public statements from Ahmadiyya leaders are …

At The Hands Of Fate: The Political Economy Of Islamic Insurance In Indonesia, Malaysia, And Pakistan, C. 1980 To The Present, Muhammad S. Rahman

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Why have Islamic insurance systems developed well in some countries, but not in others? Malaysia is considered as Islamic insurance elite due to its relatively large number of operators it houses as well as the sustained growth of Islamic insurance sales within the country, while Indonesia and Pakistan are still in early stages of development. Analyzing the political and social history of Islamization of insurance systems in these three Muslim majority countries in Asia since 1980s, this dissertation demonstrates the development gap between these countries on Islamic insurance results from; firstly, complex bargains made between various groups within each country …

The theoretical framework of the current study was drawn upon the decomposed theory of planned behaviour because of its predictive power and robustness to base a model when comparing it with the theory of planned behaviour, theory of reasoned action and innovation diffusion theory. This study added the pricing variable to the proposed model and incorporates country as a moderator variable, which …

Dynamics Of Gender Justice, Conflict And Social Cohesion: Analysing Educational Reforms In Pakistan, Naureen Durrani, Anjum Halai

Office of the Provost

This paper analyses the role of national level reforms in the school curriculum and initial teacher education in gender justice in conflict-affected Pakistan, using a multidisciplinary framework applied to multiple data sets from selected teacher education institutions in Sindh. The school curriculum texts analysed potentially perpetuate gender injustice and foster conflict. While teacher education reforms offer the potential for transformative gender justice, gender remains peripheral in initial teacher education curriculum. Furthermore, institutional practices entrench gendered norms. Lecturers’ and teachers’ limited understanding of their role and capacity for transformative gender justice pose challenges to education for gender justice, social cohesion and …

Education And Civil Conflict: The Negative Effects Of Intolerant Curricula In Kosovo, Pakistan, And Sudan, Nicholas A. Jaspers Jan 2018

Education And Civil Conflict: The Negative Effects Of Intolerant Curricula In Kosovo, Pakistan, And Sudan, Nicholas A. Jaspers

Dissertations and Theses

Education has long been used as a tool for national identity formation and social cohesion. However, in diverse communities across the globe, the question must be asked: are educational institutions creating citizens with a narrow view of “us vs. them” or an identity built on multiculturalism and acceptance? Through past research, it is obvious that education has either acted as an instigator or mitigator of civil conflict, though to what extent is still largely unknown. In this thesis, I argue that both the extent and quality of education in a country can instigate or, at least, exacerbate the outbreak of …

Pakistan's Partition: Search For National Identity, Akmal Abdulmuminov Sep 2015

Pakistan's Partition: Search For National Identity, Akmal Abdulmuminov

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Since the creation of Pakistan in 1947, Islam has played a major role in defining identity of people of Pakistan. General Zia-ul-Haq has played a major role in defining Pakistan’s national and political identity. His famous process of ruling is known as Islamization. He took several steps in doing so: first in July 1977 when he took control of the states, he established a close alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami. This put Pakistan’s national identity heavily along Islamic lines. Also under Zia-ul-Haq, all textbooks were rewritten with an Islamic ideological agenda. He increased the role of religious leaders and Islamic clerics in …

Muslim Women’S Activism: A Comparative Study Of The Educated Female Perceptions In Malaysia And Pakistan / Aurangzaib Alamgir, Alamgir Aurangzaib

Student Works (2010-2019)

The status of Muslim women in society is one of the most contested subjects in the academic scholarship for the last couple of decades. This debate on the position and status of Muslim women can be traced to the 1980s Islamic revivalist movements throughout the Muslim world. These revivalist movements gave rise to political Islam and posed severe challenges to women‟s rights organizations involved in promoting democracy and respect for human rights, particularly Muslim women‟s rights. Since then, Muslim women groups have increased considerably in number and are at the forefront in countering the use of religion by Islamic activists …

Bangladesh, Megan Adamson Sijapati

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Bangladesh (formally the People's Republic of Bangladesh) is a Muslim-majority parliamentary democracy located in South Asia. Originally called East Pakistan, it was created during the partition of India in 1947 as the eastern wing of the country of Pakistan. Its name was later changed to East Bengal and then to Bangladesh after its union with West Pakistan was broken following a bloody war of secession in 1971. [excerpt]
