The study, titled “Linguistic Proofreading between Error and Correction - Problems and Treatments,” aimed to identify the challenges faced by linguistic proofreaders and propose suitable solutions. Using an analytical descriptive approach, the study was organized into a preface and three main sections: criteria for error and correction, balancing between excess and negligence, and linguistic inquiry. The study concluded that it is essential to standardize the criteria used in linguistic proofreading, advocating for establishing a Syndicate of Linguistic Proofreaders. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of adopting a balanced approach when identifying and correcting errors. Finally, the study highlighted the need for …

English and Creative Writing Capstone Projects
This paper discusses what readers can understand about Guantanamo Bay and the larger setting of America's Islamophobic "War on Terror" through the poetry of individuals detained inside of Guantanamo Bay Military Prison. In 2002, Mark Falkoff, with the help of a team of lawyers, translators, and human rights advocates published a collection of twenty-two detainee-authored poems, titled Poems from Guantanamo: The Detainees Speak. This paper discusses the emerging neo-colonial subjectivity of America's War on Terror, as it analyzes the available writings of Guantanamo poets. The new language of subjectivity of victims of contemporary American empire is defined by suppression, as …

Negotiating Arabic: Diglossic Language And Intercultural Proficiency In American Education, Natalie C. Parsons
Negotiating Arabic: Diglossic Language And Intercultural Proficiency In American Education, Natalie C. Parsons
International Studies Honors Projects
Diglossia refers to the coexistence of High (H) and Low (L) varieties within a language (Ferguson 1959). Arabic, a diglossic language, struggles with this division. Native speakers of Arabic communicate via their dialects (L). Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL) in the US focuses on Modern Standard Arabic (H), neglecting the dialects. US government investment in Arabic as a critical language since 9/11 has continued to prioritize the instruction and professionalization of the H variety, suppressing intercultural proficiency. Arabic Language curricula in the US must evolve to teach meta-linguistic awareness between the H and L forms of Arabic.
Readers’ Perceptions Towards Two English Translations Of The Quran, Nour Alanbari
Readers’ Perceptions Towards Two English Translations Of The Quran, Nour Alanbari
Theses and Dissertations
This study aimed to examine readers’ perceptions towards two notable English translations of the Quran, investigating if the readers’ language groups affected their perception of translation quality in terms of fluency, accuracy, clarity, formality, and likability. A total of 136 participants completed a survey where they rated the researched attributes of two different English translations of the Quran. Independent t-tests, paired t-tests, and ANOVA tests were conducted to compare the overall ratings of the two translations to each other, as well as between and within language groups. Ratings of the four attributes were also compared amongst themselves. Significant …
Arabic Beyond Arabic, Abir Zakzok
Arabic Beyond Arabic, Abir Zakzok
Theses and Dissertations
Arabic is the best and the most complicated language of all time!” Even though this statement seems like an exaggeration, it is what I grew up hearing; from my Arab parents as a child, my Arab teachers as a student, and my Arab customers as a salesperson. The Arabic language has a significant role in Arabs’ identity, yet most Arabs only scratch the surface and do not fully grasp the embedded meaning of the language. I have long been fascinated by the relationship between language and community as well as how it translates to design - specifically, the relationship between …

Percezione E Ruolo Delle Lingue Straniere E Dell’Arabo Standard In Alcune Commedie Di Ziad Rahbani, Giuseppe Emanuele Ventura
Al-Kīmiyā
This paper aims at analysing various passages from some of the most famous comedies by Lebanese playwright Ziad Rahbani, characterized by the use of different languages, language varieties and Modern Standard Arabic mixed with Lebanese Arabic. All of these extracts have been transcribed and translated into Italian, so that a linguistic analysis and review about peculiar leitmotivs of Ziad's comedies can be outlined. Furthermore, this analysis has turned out to be useful in order to highlight the value, the importance and the effects of the above-mentioned elements within the comedies. It proves the relationship between the use of language and …
Prevalence Of The French Language In Algerian Online News : A Remnant Of The Colonial Past., Zofia A. Hetman
Prevalence Of The French Language In Algerian Online News : A Remnant Of The Colonial Past., Zofia A. Hetman
College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses
A French colony for over a century, Algeria gained independence in 1962, yet its identity remains chained to its traumatic history. During the colonial period, French officials enacted laws to subvert the native population and its culture by discouraging the teaching of Arabic and, in its place, emphasizing French language and culture. Seeking to reclaim their national identity, leaders in post-independent Algeria created Arabization policies, which favored the use of Arabic and discouraged the use of French. Algerian society has therefore long been the target of linguistic control. As a result, language preferences of Algerians can be linked to the …

Phantom Arabic, Dislocated French: Auto-Anthropological Imaginaries:Jean Genet, Abdellah Taia,Leila Sebbar, Nabil Ayouch, Amine Zidouh
Open Access Dissertations
This study combines sociolinguistics with literary, cultural and cinematographic studies in the analysis of works by Jean Genet, Abdellah Taia, Leila Sebbar and Nabil Ayouch. This dissertation’s main argument is that an understanding of the relationship between what is to be conceived as Phantom Arabic and Dislocated French is crucial to the critical repositioning and re-questioning of a significant part of postcolonial cultural production emanating from North Africa and/or the North African diaspora. This thesis intervenes in current debates in French and Francophone Studies, in Arabic and Comparative Studies, but also in Sociolinguistics (particularly as related to North Africa, the …
Transnational Education Systems In Morocco: How Language Of Instruction Shapes Identity, Sarah Robertson
Transnational Education Systems In Morocco: How Language Of Instruction Shapes Identity, Sarah Robertson
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The North African country of Morocco boasts a rich history of linguistic diversity, which was further compounded with the introduction of the French language under the protectorate in 1912. Through a complicated mix of Fus’ha (Modern Standard Arabic), Darija (Moroccan Dialectical Arabic), French (historically the language of the protectorate), and most recently, the introduction of English, the system of education with respect to linguistic instruction is left in a bind. The divide between the public schools, private schools, traditional Arabic schools, and well-‐ established French schools only grows, as the Moroccan Education system hurts for change. If language shapes education, …
Thoughts On High Level Proficiency In Arabic, Russian And English With A Platitudinous Postlude, James Bernhardt
Thoughts On High Level Proficiency In Arabic, Russian And English With A Platitudinous Postlude, James Bernhardt
Russian Language Journal
In the present paper, I look at the top of the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) Skill Level Descriptions and critique several of their assumptions. As I do this, I speak for myself and not for the Government in general or the U.S. Department of State in particular. I also do not pretend that my conclusions are not uncontroversial. I also discuss the 2012 ACTFL proficiency standards, but note that we do not train to those standards at the Foreign Service Institute.

Normal And Pathological Breakdown In Arabic., Sabah Safi-Stagni
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
The grammatical structure of Arabic allows for significant cross-linguistic comparisons in the study of Slips-of-the-tongue as well as aphasia. The dissertation presents a case study of the aphasic deficit in the speech of a speaker of Arabic, in particular, the Hijazi dialect spoken in the Western Province of Saudi Arabia, with a subsequent comparison with regular slips-of-the-tongue in the same dialect collected and analyzed by the same author. Both the slips-of-the-tongue data and the aphasia data have been collected in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, by the present investigator. It was observed that in such a highly inflected language, …

Recent Attempts To Reforming Arabic Grammar, Abdul Warith M. Said
Archived Theses and Dissertations
This thesis aims at studying and evaluating, within a comprehensive framework, the attempts made in Egypt in the last hundred years to reform Arabic grammar. The attempts made before
this period have been only touched on, being a part of the back ground of the recent ones. This study is composed of a preface pointing out why this subject was chosen, its scope and the gap it is hoped to fill; an introduction dealing with the meaning of "grammar" and the developments of grammatical study of Arabic in the previous centuries; four chapters which dealt respectively with the following topics: …
