This study examines the racial, socio-economic, and political factors that shaped The House of Yisrael, a Black Nationalist community in Cincinnati, Ohio. The members of this community structure their lives following the Black Hebrew Israelite ideology sharing the core beliefs that Black people are the "true" descendants of the ancient Israelites of the biblical narrative. Therefore, as Israelites, Black people should follow the Torah as a guideline for daily life. Because they are the "chosen people," God will judge those who have oppressed them. This ideology, which began in the U.S. during the nineteenth century, has recently been growing more …

History Of Visual Communication Design: The Bezelel Academy Of Art, Jerusalem, Shayna Tova Blum
History Of Visual Communication Design: The Bezelel Academy Of Art, Jerusalem, Shayna Tova Blum
Faculty and Staff Publications
Supported by the modern European Zionist movement, the Bezelel Academy of Art, Jerusalem, was founded in 1906 by Lithuanian artist and Zionist Boris Schatz. In the early years of the academy, work produced by students exhibited the political complexities presented in the Jewish return to Eretz Israel. The expression of concepts addressed in modern Jewish identity and Zionist ideologies were utilized in creative processes of visual communication and design. As most faculty and students were immigrating to Mandatory Palestine from Europe, the academy’s curriculum was developed through the culmination of styles and materials reflective of both European art and design …

American Studies Honors Projects
This Honors project is a site of intersection of my academic and activist interests in interrogating Whiteness, my social identity as a cultural Jewish American, and my creative passions in comedy performance. The tragicomic films The Graduate, Goodbye, Columbus, and Annie Hall of the 1960s and 1970s articulate the painful process of Jewish self- and group-definition in relation to dominant culture amidst fractures amongst Jews and external hostility and invitation. The collision of Jews’ long history of humor as a cultural practice and the turbulence and ambivalence of the post-World War II moment facilitated a space for Jewish …
Culture And Exchange: The Jews Of Königsberg, 1700-1820, Jill Storm
Culture And Exchange: The Jews Of Königsberg, 1700-1820, Jill Storm
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This dissertation traces the history of the Jewish community in Königsberg, East Prussia, from its founding in 1700 to the aftermath of the Prussian Emancipation Edict of 1812, as well as the early stages of Jewish embourgeoisement and political integration. My project combines aspects of a traditional communal history with newer trends in Jewish history, including an integrated discussion of economic and cultural life. I argue that the commercial successes of the Jewish mercantile elite in Königsberg, in particular of the Friedländer family, set the stage for the publication of ha-Measef and the local flowering of the haskalah. Moreover, I …

Anti-Semitism And The Early Printing Press: A Study Of The Effect Of The Printing Press On Jewish Expulsions In Germany, 1450-1520, Amy O'Callaghan
Honors Papers
At the end of the fifteenth century, the Holy Roman Empire saw a dramatic escalation in anti-Semitism that paved the way for one of the largest waves of Jewish expulsions in medieval history. The Jews were expelled from Endingen in 1470, Mainz in 1473, and following the case of Simon of Trent, the Trent Jews were banished in 1475 and the Jews of Pass au in 1479; by the end of the fifteenth century Mecklenburg, Magdeburg, Salzburg and Nuremberg had also succeeded in driving out their Jewish populations. This is only a sample of the cities that lost their Jewish …

The Jews Of Omaha: The First Sixty Years, Carol Gendler
The Jews Of Omaha: The First Sixty Years, Carol Gendler
Student Work
The topic for this study was suggested more than three years ago by members of the Department of History of the University of Omaha. It has involved not only a study of American Jewish history in general, but also further research into a variety of local historical sources and subjects. The study of a Jewish community is much more than a religious history--it is social, economic, political, and cultural history as well. Since it is difficult to evaluate contemporary history and to deal with living personalities, this study covers the subject through the year 1915. By that time the Jewish …
