Landscapes Of Exclusion: Mapping Racial Boundaries And Environmental Burdens, Monique A. Baxter Jun 2026

Landscapes Of Exclusion: Mapping Racial Boundaries And Environmental Burdens, Monique A. Baxter

2026 Symposium

Inspired by the author’s work with the mapping team for the Eastern Washington University Racial Covenants Project, this project uses additional GIS layers to reveal the enduring imprint of historic racial exclusion on today’s urban landscape. Spokane, Washington’s landscape, like many urban areas across the country, bears the imprint of racial exclusion through mechanisms such as restrictive covenants and redlining. This project examines how racial covenants and red lining layers relate to current brownfield and superfund sites to shape Spokane’s long-term environmental injustice. Using digitized property records, historic zoning maps, and GIS spatial analysis, this project demonstrates that historically red …

Spatial Analysis Of American Chestnut (Castanea Dentata) Distribution And Ecology In Kentucky’S Federal Lands, Jacob Raymond Pease Jan 2025

Spatial Analysis Of American Chestnut (Castanea Dentata) Distribution And Ecology In Kentucky’S Federal Lands, Jacob Raymond Pease

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Anthropogenic factors have been the cause of the decline of tree species across the globe. From unsustainable logging and development to disease and improper management, threats to forests have taken their toll. The American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was once an integral basal tree species in Appalachian forests, but chestnut blight drove the species to functional extinction by the mid-1900s. The recent creation of genetically modified chestnuts gives hope for future restoration of the species throughout its historical range. Despite blight resistance, effective restoration will require optimal site selection for finding and planting chestnuts, which will maximize limited resources. …

Environment And Belief: Investigating The Dakota Archeological Record, Anna Kay Wiitanen-Eggen Jan 2024

Environment And Belief: Investigating The Dakota Archeological Record, Anna Kay Wiitanen-Eggen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The oral traditions and histories of a people’s belief systems are one means by which the relationships between a people and their environment are embodied. Environmental aspects of a people’s belief system are reflected in their use of their habited space(s) because beliefs help structure actions. Ergo, an examination of a people’s oral traditions and histories has the potential to provide valuable insight to the archeological record of the places potentially occupied by their ancestors or close relatives. Investigation of this aspect of archeology is a relatively new pursuit and is almost completely unexplored in Minnesota. The relationship between the …

Effects Of Landscape Structure On Plants Species Richness In Small Grassland Remnants In Two Different Landscapes, S. A. O. Cousins, O. Eriksson Mar 2023

Effects Of Landscape Structure On Plants Species Richness In Small Grassland Remnants In Two Different Landscapes, S. A. O. Cousins, O. Eriksson

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

There is an increasing interest in using the landscape as the operational scale in many ecological studies. Current species richness in the landscape may be explained by past land use, and habitats may harbour species favoured by an environment that no longer exists. In this study we have included both a landscape scale and a temporal scale. The objective was to explain species pattern and the effect of isolation, habitat size and surrounding land use, and past land use change, on small grassland remnants in rural landscapes.

A Gis Suitability Model Evaluating Habitat Characteristics Influencing Beaver (Castor Canadensis) Lodge Site Selection And Lodge Occupancy In Central Adirondacks, New York, Amanda K. Jacobs

Theses - ALL

The North American beaver (Castor canadensis) represents a quintessential example of an "ecosystem engineer." Yet the species' landscape-scale impacts on hydrology, geomorphology, and ecosystem ecology are not uniformly distributed through landscapes or time. Understanding beaver lodge site selection and lodge fidelity through time can help to predict where the greatest effects of beaver activity may occur. In this research project, I seek to understand the relationships between beaver habitat suitability, the habitat variables that currently define suitable areas, and lodge occupancy over time. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to model habitat suitability, I use hydrologic, vegetative, and physiographic variables to …

Using Species Distribution Models And Connectivity Analyses To Predict Habitat Suitability For Three Bat Species, James Howard Cox Iii Jan 2019

Using Species Distribution Models And Connectivity Analyses To Predict Habitat Suitability For Three Bat Species, James Howard Cox Iii

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Forests are the most important and universally threatened habitats for bats. Habitat loss and fragmentation are leading causes of damage to forest ecosystem integrity. Critically, most bats need forests: over half of the 45 species of bats in North America use forests for roosting or foraging. Much research to date has been done to identify roosting and foraging patches of bats, but few have attempted to investigate how these patches are connected across a landscape. By understanding how to maintain connectivity across even fragmented landscapes, we may be able to mitigate the effects of forest habitat loss. In this thesis, …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Abstract

Preventable hospitalizations (PHs) are those for ambulatory care-sensitive conditions that indicate insufficiencies in local primary healthcare. PH rates tend to be higher among African Americans, in urban centers, rural areas and areas with more African American residents. The objective of this study is to determine geographic clusters of high PH rates (“spatial clusters”) by race. Data from Maryland hospitals were utilized to determine the rates of PHs in zip code tabulation areas (ZCTAs) by race in 2010. Geographic clusters of ZCTAs with higher than expected PH rates were identified using Scan Statistic and Anselin’s Local Moran’s I. 10 PH …

The Effect Of Site Characteristics On The Reproductive Output Of Lesser Celandine (Ranunculus Ficaria), Justin P. Kermack Jan 2017

The Effect Of Site Characteristics On The Reproductive Output Of Lesser Celandine (Ranunculus Ficaria), Justin P. Kermack

ETD Archive

Ranunculus ficaria L., an ephemeral perennial invasive plant brought over from Europe, is becoming widespread throughout the Northeastern United States. This herbaceous buttercup is able to create extensive dense mats that limit native species growth. Taking advantage of an early growing season and rapid reproduction rates, this species can create dense monocultures, which threatens native communities and ecosystems. Elimination of native spring ephemerals results in decreased biodiversity. A better understanding of how R. ficaria responds to site characteristics is needed to prioritize management efforts toward high-risk sites.

Ranunculus ficaria abundance and reproductive output (seed, bulbil and tuber production rates) were …

Territoriality And Spatial Structure In The Green Anole, Anolis Carolinensis, William D. Weber Jr.

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Anolis carolinensis has been a model organism for ecology and evolutionary biology since the seventies, yet there are still understudied aspects of their ecology. A five-year study has provided microsatellite genotypes to be used in building a pedigree and assess relatedness, enabling us to evaluate the spatial distribution of an urban population of A. carolinensis. Results indicate no correlation between a male’s size and the distance others keep from it; however, males belonging in the heavyweight morph are dictating the spatial distribution in this population. In addition, juvenile dispersal of male offspring and partial philopatry of female offspring are …
