Corporate Ethical Training: An Answer To White-Collar Crimes, Richard Pitre, Claudius Claiborne
Corporate Ethical Training: An Answer To White-Collar Crimes, Richard Pitre, Claudius Claiborne
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
The modern business corporation is a culturally significant component of American Society. It is facing a cultural invasion of the highest order. The categorical imperative, an unconditional principle that rational individuals must follow despite natural desires or inclinations to do otherwise, is today being called into question. This is most likely the result of grounding moral values upon information that is transient and unstable rather than upon established data. The social contract, which governs the formation and maintenance of individual morals, is a requirement in organizations that demands collective agency – employees acting together to set forth moral rules of …
How Does The Capability Of Top Management Influence Financial Reporting Fraud?, Michael Wojcikiewicz
How Does The Capability Of Top Management Influence Financial Reporting Fraud?, Michael Wojcikiewicz
Honors Projects in Finance
This study examines the attributes which capture the capability of a perpetrator to engage in financial reporting fraud. Fraudulent financial reporting can be devastating for a company and its employees. Capability includes such measures as the person’s position and the function in which they work. The study reveals how capability influences the occurrence of fraud, the amount of the fraud, and whether capability interacts with concealing the fraud from an audit. The results of the thesis should assist fraud professionals, investors, and regulators as well as stakeholders of corporations by examining publicly available data and highlighting characteristics that can contribute …

Sarah Wilson, The Origins Of Modern Financial Crime: Historical Foundations And Current Problems In Britain, Aneta Spaic, Claire Angelique Nolasco
Qualitative Criminology (QC)
"This book traces the roots of financial crime to the Victorian Era roughly between the years 1840-1880. Wilson situates financial crime within the context of the concerns, perceptions, developments, and issues endemic to that period. She attempts to draw the reader to the realities of this particular Victorian era as it was unfolding and explains how financial misconduct within commerce became rampant as construction of the railways spurred the growth of industrialization. The book contributes to existing literature on financial crime by providing a historical analysis of its etymology and creating awareness of its historical origins and prevalence long before …
“In Counterfeit Passion”: Cross-Dressing, Transgression, And Fraud In Shakespeare And Middleton, Anastasia S. Bierman
“In Counterfeit Passion”: Cross-Dressing, Transgression, And Fraud In Shakespeare And Middleton, Anastasia S. Bierman
Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis examines the way women cross-dressing as men functions as a crime in Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker’s The Roaring Girl and William Shakespeare’s As You Like It and Twelfth Night. While many modern scholars have discussed cross-dressing in these plays, many look to the end of the plays as the foundation for their analysis rather than the play as a whole. Because of this oversight, scholars deem the characters in the plays not transgressive, when, in fact, cross-dressing is transgressive. They ignore the way cross-dressing is often presented in writing in the Renaissance, i.e. as a type …

White Collar Crime And The United States' Economy, Megan Graham
Honors Theses and Capstones

Race And Crime: Social Perceptions, Diana Teverovskaya
Honors College Theses
This study looked at whether White offenders are more likely to be socially accepted back into society as compared to their counterpart Black offenders, when both offenders commit the same crime. A sample of 120 Pace University undergraduate students were recruited. Acceptance of offenders was determined by using the Bogardus Social Distance Scale, which measures how much an individual would allow a criminal into their social circle. Participants received one of four fictional vignettes of either a White male or Black male committing one of two crimes: a white collar crime or a drug-related crime. It was found that, regardless …

Cyber-Extortion: Duties And Liabilities Related To The Elephant In The Server Room, Adam J. Sulkowski
ExpressO
This is a comprehensive analysis of the legal frameworks related to cyber-extortion – the practice of demanding money in exchange for not carrying out threats to commit harm that would involve a victim's information systems. The author hopes it will catalyze an urgently needed discussion of relevant public policy concerns.
Cyber-extortion has, by all accounts, become a common, professionalized and profit-driven criminal pursuit targeting businesses. 17% of businesses in a recent survey indicated having received a cyber-extortion demand. An additional 13% of respondents were not sure if their business had received such a demand.
Awareness of the risks of cybercrime …
Criminal Justice And The Challenge Of Family Ties, Dan Markel, Ethan J. Leib
Criminal Justice And The Challenge Of Family Ties, Dan Markel, Ethan J. Leib
Faculty Scholarship
This Article asks two basic questions: When does, and when should, the state use the criminal justice apparatus to accommodate family ties, responsibilities, and interests? We address these questions by first revealing a variety of laws that together form a string of family ties subsidies and benefits pervading the criminal justice system. Notwithstanding our recognition of the important role family plays in securing the conditions for human flourishing, we then explain the basis for erecting a Spartan presumption against these family ties subsidies and benefits within the criminal justice system. We delineate the scope and rationale for the presumption and …

The Complexity Of Crime, John E. Angell
The Complexity Of Crime, John E. Angell
Other Works
Although fictional representations of crime depicted in TV shows, movies, and other popular media tend to be simplistic and unrealistic, these portrayals shape much of the American conventional wisdom about crime. This article contrasts fictional depictions of crime and criminals with how criminality actually is seen in society, what causes it, and how it can be addressed.
