The Mathematics Enthusiast
In concluding the second series of eight articles in the double special issue on ‘Engaging with communication and language in relation to mathematics and its education’, we take the opportunity to reflect across the articles to prompt us all to consider potential and emerging directions for future research. This final article is overall a commentary inspired by the communication-centred and language-centred contributions to mathematics education across the entire collection of articles, that is, all those comments that situate mathematics and its education as language and communication praxis. We explore this relationship between mathematics and its education with communication and language …

Human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause six cancer types but can be prevented with timely vaccination in early adolescence. However, despite the wide availability of the HPV vaccine, uptake remains suboptimal among US adolescents. School nurses are invaluable resources to students and their families regarding adolescent immunization needs. As part of the All for Them vaccination program, we assessed the impact of the continued nurse education (CNE) intervention on school nurses’ HPV vaccine communication with parents. Seventy-two school nurses and nurse administrators in Texas participated in the study. Using a single-arm study design, we measured participants’ potential barriers to and self-efficacy …

“Salvation Must Be Communicated”: An Ecumenical Reading Of The Place Of The Lion, Avery-Claire Galloway
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
While previous scholarship has cautioned against a reductive tendency in the analysis of Charles Williams’s work, this paper offers an analysis that explores the importantly multiplicable nature of meaning used in one of Williams’s most bizarre novels, The Place of the Lion. A close reading of a remark from the novel’s heroine that “salvation must be communicated” provides a lens by which the entire novel can be read, revealing how Williams presents a specific, culture-centered version of Christianity where communication leads to a salvation that is more cultural than doctrinal, more than the erasure of sins, but an experience …
Rompiendo Fronteras: Addressing Language Barriers In Hispanic Palliative Cancer Care, Carla Mcnulty, Catherine Finlayson
Rompiendo Fronteras: Addressing Language Barriers In Hispanic Palliative Cancer Care, Carla Mcnulty, Catherine Finlayson
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: Cancer is the leading cause of death among Hispanic people, accounting for 20% of deaths (American Cancer Society, 2023). In 2024, the American Cancer Society predicted that 195,300 Hispanics would be diagnosed with cancer in the United States, and 50,400 (25%) would die from their disease, leaving approximately 144,900 (75%) living with cancer. As the Hispanic population rises in the United States, one can predict that cancer diagnoses will also increase. This is likely to result in a higher number of cancer-related deaths, as well as more individuals living with cancer. Consequently, there will be an increased demand for …

Dnp Student Implementation Of Pc4 Model In A Pregnancy Resource Center To Improve Quality Of Care, Priscilla A. Outlaw
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Pregnancy resource centers (PRCs) play a critical role in supporting women from underserved communities but often struggle to consistently meet clients’ emotional, cultural, and psychological needs. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to evaluate the impact of implementing the Person-Centered Care and Communication Continuum (PC4) Model—an evidence-based framework designed to enhance respect, communication, and individualized attention in maternal healthcare—on client satisfaction and service engagement at a local PRC.
Guided by Watson’s Theory of Human Caring, this mixed-methods quality-improvement project assessed antenatal client satisfaction and service delivery before and after PC4 implementation. Surveys and structured observations …
Power-Efficient Target Tracking And Coverage In Under-Provisioned Wireless Visual Sensor Networks, Muna M. Jawad
Power-Efficient Target Tracking And Coverage In Under-Provisioned Wireless Visual Sensor Networks, Muna M. Jawad
Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering
Due to their ability to detect the physical environment, directional sensors have attracted a lot of attention in wireless visual sensor networks (WVSN). These sensors perform two key functions: communication and sensing. A WVSN comprises numerous configurable limited fields of view sensors, comprising distinct angular sectors, arranged with multiple targets randomly scattered in the same surrounding region. Therefore, there is a critical need to improve the network's lifetime and reduce power demand while providing complete target coverage. This paper looks at under-resourced visual networks with an inadequate number of sensors to match applications' needs and develops a viable model to …

Leadership Dynamics, Transparency, & Governance During Crisis In Religious Organizations: Discussing The Roman Catholic Church’S Centralized Authority, John D. Rudnick Jr, Raymond L. Enzweiler, Srecko Koralija
Interdisciplinary Journal of Leadership Studies
Abstract
This article considers two high-profile crises inside the Roman Catholic Church. The rejection of the Vatican audit in 2015 and the financial loss from a large investment in London real estate exemplify tension and balance between centralized, hierarchical leadership and institutional accountability. These cases examine leadership patterns relative to transparency, communication, and governance, evaluating the efficacy of centralized power under financial distress. The discussion is organized across pre-crisis, active crisis, and post-crisis phases by integrating insights from transactional, transformational, servant, and adaptive leadership style models. Performance improvement (PI) tools such as Before Action Reviews (BARs), After Action Reviews (AARs), …

A Quality Improvement Project: Impacting Communication Perceptions Among Nursing Staff And Providers Regarding Perioperative Medication Management Impacting Anesthesia Care, Demetria Jefferson
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Medication-related surgical cancellations disrupt patient care, increase healthcare costs, and contribute to inefficient use of perioperative resources. Evidence supports standardized education and communication to improve perioperative medication safety. This quality improvement project aimed to improve staff self-efficacy in communicating medication instructions and reduce surgical cancellations associated with sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, and phentermine. Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory and Lewin’s Change Model guided the project. A quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design included perioperative staff who provided medication instructions across two settings within an academic health sciences center. Using the Plan-Do-Study-Act framework, interventions included standardized staff education, patient …

Parameters Bookshelf – Online Book Reviews
Author: Yuval Noah Harari
Reviewed by Colonel Daniel R. Leard, US Army War College Fellow at Princeton University
Built on the ideas that stories are important and bind civilizations, which results in human societies working as information networks, Nexus: A Brief History of Information Networks from the Stone Age to AI, by Yuval Noah Harari, is the third book exploring the evolution of humanity. Harari unpacks the idea that the networks people create have flaws and people tend to exploit these flaws to misuse power. Though the topic is heavy, the reviewer notes, Harari “presents deeply complex issues in …
More Than A Call: Why The Martha Wright-Reed Act Falls Short In Reforming Prison Communication, Carrington Wilkes
More Than A Call: Why The Martha Wright-Reed Act Falls Short In Reforming Prison Communication, Carrington Wilkes
Georgia Criminal Law Review
In response to widespread criticism of exploitative prison communication costs, Congress enacted the Martha Wright-Reed Just and Reasonable Communications Act of 2022 (the “Act”). This legislation tasked the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) with establishing fair rates for phone and video calls made by inmates in jails, prisons, and immigration detention centers. While the Act marks a critical step in reducing financial burdens on incarcerated individuals and their families, it does not cover other widely used communication methods, such as electronic messaging, emails, and tablet-based platforms. These newer services remain largely unregulated, enabling private companies to impose excessive fees due to …

Lessons Learned From An Experiential Learning Project In An “Exercise And Wellness For Special Populations” Course, Anita M. Gust
Educational Practices in Kinesiology
Experiential learning (EL) is a vital pedagogical approach in higher education and is an integral part of exercise science; however, research on its effectiveness within the discipline is limited. The purpose of this study was to 1) determine if an experiential learning project designed for an “Exercise and Wellness for Special Populations” course was effective for achieving the learner outcomes, and 2) to identify what additional lessons, beyond the course learning outcomes, were learned from the experiential learning project. In this retrospective study, students’ written reflections using the DEAL (Describe, Evaluate, Articulate Learning) model served as data. A content analysis …

Nonverbal Communication In New York Fashion Week, Lianna Cruz, Maia Coyle
Nonverbal Communication In New York Fashion Week, Lianna Cruz, Maia Coyle
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
Nonverbal communication research has largely explored materiality and performance independently, leaving their joint role in meaning-making underexamined. The authors applied Langerian aesthetic theory and examined how three key kinesic variables intersect with clothing to create significance and symbolism by asking, “How do rhythm, body movement, and dance build meaning in New York Fashion Week?” Following Langer and Edward T. Hall, we conducted close visual analyses of three Spring and Fall 2025 New York Fashion Week shows: Coach, Off-White, and Thom Browne. Findings indicate that these variables build meaning by creating degrees of professionalism, reinforcing meanings through clothes, and renegotiating meanings …

Facevalue: Exploring Real-Time Self-View Overlays To Prompt Meaning-Oriented Self-Awareness In Remote Meetings, Gun Woo (Warren) Park, Anthony Tang, Fanny Chevalier
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In remote video meetings, visual non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions or head movements, are seen continuously but often only partially. This increases ambiguity compared to in-person settings and can cause misinterpretation or misalignment between intended and perceived meaning. Motivated by communication theories, we designed FaceValue, a technology probe that augments the self-view with private, real-time overlays. These overlays are subtle, suggestive prompts intended to help attendees reflect on how their cues might be interpreted by others. To invite personal interpretation, FaceValue avoids behavioral labeling and instead aims to support meaning-oriented self-awareness: recognizing when visible cues may unintentionally (mis)communicate intent. …

Mental health stigma in the Black male community is a significant topic worth further investigation within the field of communication. Few current studies go into depth on the subject of mental health stigma, with the aim of understanding how communication is impacted by stigma. This work fills that gap. This qualitative research study sought to explicate the varied strategies employed by Black males when navigating disclosure in social media spaces. Stigma management communication theory is the guiding theory used to illuminate the communication choices made by Black males that shape their experiences. Factors such as racism, historical medical maltreatment, and …

Quoting The Silver Screen: The Communication Influence Of Film Dialogue, Albert Clayton Vandiver Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This qualitative thematic analysis study researched the topic of film dialogue elements used in common interpersonal discourse. These elements, or movie quotes, were observed to manifest as meaning-filled symbols in communication throughout American culture. This phenomenon, and the gap in scholarly literature or lack of research on movie quotes within the field of communication, underscored the significance and need for investigation. This study employed a qualitative methodology using the thematic analysis approach in evaluating data. Research questions were designed to focus the study on internal motivation for, and external influence on, movie quote usage. 17 screened adult participants provided valid …

The following activity promotes teacher noticing as a pedagogical tool for teachers in training, with a focus on the public speaking classroom. Many students enter the public speaking classroom filled with performance anxiety and fears of how their peers will perceive them. When a teacher can tap into these concerns via by noticing how students are reacting in the moment, they can assuage those anxieties and fears. Hence, teaching instructors effective teacher noticing in teacher training improves the classroom experience for teachers and students alike.

Rising financial pressures and the need to revitalize culture prompted a renewed emphasis on patient experience at Billings Clinic. This case study describes the impact of redefining patient experience as a measure of trust and a set of care processes. It presents an alternative to the more traditional view of patient experience as an outcome metric based on meeting patient expectations. Billings Clinic chose the patient survey question likelihood of recommending as an organizational goal or key performance indicator (KPI). Under the direction of executive leadership, the patient experience team developed a new strategic framework aimed at driving improvement for …

From Drifting To Anchored: How Online Health Communities Can Transform Care For Complex Chronic Illness, Mads Eggerding
Patient Experience Journal
This personal narrative recounts a 25-year diagnostic odyssey with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, defined by medical fragmentation, dismissed symptoms, and profound isolation. It illustrates how Online Health Communities (OHCs) bridged the chasm between lived experience and a clinical system ill-equipped for complex chronic illness. For patients like me, these digital forums provide the peer validation, practical knowledge, and self-advocacy tools necessary to navigate a disjointed healthcare landscape. For providers, this story underscores a critical opportunity: proactive, non-judgmental engagement with OHCs is not a threat to expertise but a foundational strategy for patient-centered care. By acknowledging and constructively partnering with these patient-led spaces, …

Secondary Infertility: A Personal Story Of Loss And Grief, Ben Hughes
Patient Experience Journal
An increasing number of people worldwide are experiencing fertility and this trend is reflected in the data from the United Kingdom. However, most research focuses on the experiences of women and so the male perspective is largely missing from the literature. This narrative is an account of my personal journey of secondary infertility. Presenting a male perspective of infertility provides a point of view which is rarely explored and is about a topic which feels largely a societal taboo. I chart how infertility has changed me, what it has meant to me through my years of trying to come to …

Transparent communication is key to building and maintaining strong patient-provider relationships. In this article, I interviewed a patient who shared her experience undergoing treatment for a chronic vulvar condition and the consequences that followed. She described a painful procedure for which she felt unprepared and later realized she had not been educated about the need for ongoing care. Years later, this gap in understanding contributed to irreversible disease progression. After re-establishing care with a dermatologist she felt comfortable confiding in, the patient expressed a desire for her story to be shared. This narrative presents her experience as she shared it …
