`Environmental Policies And Sustainable Development Nexus: A Comprehensive Review On Current Strategies Of Saudi Arabia', Waleed A. Alsiary
Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Meteorology, Environment and Arid Land Agriculture
This research paper analytically reviews the legal frameworks and environmental governance related to internationally acknowledged standards of sustainability in Saudi Arabia. Its focus is on Vision 2030 that promotes the practices of sustainability in accordance with diversified economic resources and environmental preservation. Therefore, the review examines the history of environmental degradation as a result of the oil-based economy and the efforts exerted to address issues of climate change, renewable energy, and water scarcity. It reveals that Saudi Arabia has attained sustainable reforms in environmental regulations, such as the inclusion of sustainable development in the national plans. Nevertheless, it underscores that …

The Timing Of Albedo Declines With Reforestation, Christopher A. Williams, Surendra Shrestha, Susan Cook-Patton, Natalia Hasler, Drew E. Terasaki-Hart, Samantha Yeo
Geography
Reforestation is a leading climate solution for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but generally decreases surface albedo, which diminishes its climate mitigation value. Knowing how quickly this albedo effect unfolds relative to carbon removal is critical for planning climate mitigation actions, yet the temporal changes in albedo are poorly described. This study uses satellite observations to characterize temporal changes in albedo with stand development for different forest types and ecoclimatic settings around the world. We find that about half of the climate warming effect from decreased albedo occurs within 40 years, but that it takes anywhere from 50 to …

Impact Of Climate Change On The Spatiotemporal Distribution Of Stream Flow And Sediment Yield Of Darbandikhan Watershed, Iraq, Mahmoud S. Al- Khafaji, Rana D. Al- Chalabi
Engineering and Technology Journal
The impact of climate change on stream flow and sediment yield in Darbandikhan Watershed is an important challenge facing the water resources in Diyala River, Iraq. This impact was investigated using five Global Circulation Models (GCM) based climate change projection models from the A1B scenario of medium emission. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to compute the temporal and spatial distribution of streamflow and sediment yield of the study area for the period 1984 to 2050. The daily-observed flow recorded in Darbandikhan Dam for the period from 1984 to 2013 was used as a base period for …
Impacts Of Climate Change On Microalgae: Physiological Responses And Future Adaptations - A Review, Mohamed Zein Alabdein Nassar
Impacts Of Climate Change On Microalgae: Physiological Responses And Future Adaptations - A Review, Mohamed Zein Alabdein Nassar
Blue Economy
Climate change is increasingly affecting aquatic ecosystems, including microalgae (phytoplankton), which play a crucial role as primary producers and account for nearly half of global carbon fixation. This review synthesizes recent advances in understanding the effects of climate change on microalgae from physiological, ecological, and molecular perspectives. Increased temperatures, ocean acidification, changes in light regimes, and nutrient variability greatly affect microalgal growth, photosynthesis, and community structure, often promoting smaller and more stress-tolerant species. These changes also contribute to the expansion and intensification of harmful algal blooms, with serious ecological and economic consequences. Microalgae exhibit diverse adaptive responses, including metabolic reprogramming, …
Parental Thermal Environment Affects Offspring Resilience To Winter And Spring Weather Anomalies, Ruzhuo Chen, Mariel Dunn, Caroline A. Curtis, Mariana Abarca
Parental Thermal Environment Affects Offspring Resilience To Winter And Spring Weather Anomalies, Ruzhuo Chen, Mariel Dunn, Caroline A. Curtis, Mariana Abarca
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Recent increases in the frequency and intensity of thermal anomalies can result in recurrent stressful weather events. Among annual insects, this phenomenon may expose parents and offspring to a succession of different weather anomalies (e.g. summer heatwaves and late spring frosts). Parental stress can alter offspring physiology and performance, potentially affecting their tolerance of environmental variation. We investigated the transgenerational effects of thermal anomalies on a univoltine wetland butterfly. We induced parental thermal stress by exposing pupae to a constant temperature, ranging from stressfully cold to stressfully hot (10 ◦C, 26 ◦C, 28 ◦C, 32 ◦C), for three days. Offspring …
Blue Crab Reproductive Output And Phenology In A Changing Climate, Blaise Rohan
Blue Crab Reproductive Output And Phenology In A Changing Climate, Blaise Rohan
Master's Theses
Globally, ecosystems are experiencing rising temperatures due to climate change, with potential consequences for reproductive investment and timing in many species. Blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, support valuable commercial fisheries throughout the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf coasts, and understanding variation in reproductive output has important management and conservation implications. This study examined two components of blue crab reproduction: (1) reproductive investment across populations spanning multiple latitudes (New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Mississippi, and Texas), using a space-for-time substitution to assess the effects of varying thermal regimes on fecundity and egg quality, and (2) spawning phenology in North Carolina from …
Spatial And Hydrologic Effects Of Climate Change And Urbanization On Freshwater Fish Communities In North Georgia Watersheds, Mayuko Mizutani
Spatial And Hydrologic Effects Of Climate Change And Urbanization On Freshwater Fish Communities In North Georgia Watersheds, Mayuko Mizutani
Master's Theses
Urbanization and climate change are altering streamflow and land cover across the southeastern United States, threatening freshwater biodiversity in rivers already burdened by impoundments and habitat loss. I investigated how changes in streamflow and land cover might affect fish community biodiversity in the Etowah River watershed of North Georgia. By combining a dataset of fish collections from 1999 through 2019 with contemporaneous land use and daily streamflow, I was able to model fish community responses to urbanization and climate-driven hydrologic changes and then forecast fish community structure under multiple CMIP6 global climate models and greenhouse gas emissions scenarios (SSP2-4.5 and …
Integrating Space Use And Demography To Support Management Of An Endangered Alpine Ungulate, Danielle J. Berger
Integrating Space Use And Demography To Support Management Of An Endangered Alpine Ungulate, Danielle J. Berger
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
The places animals choose to live affect the food they find, the dangers they face, and the weather conditions they experience. These experiences influence whether individual animals survive and reproduce, which in turn affects the size and health of animal populations. Although scientists have long believed that animal movements play an important role in population trends, there has been limited real-world evidence showing this connection. Advances in GPS tracking technology now allow researchers to follow animals over long periods and better understand how movement influences survival. Using 20 years of GPS tracking data from the endangered Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep …

Jurnal Pendidikan Geografi: Kajian, Teori, dan Praktek dalam Bidang Pendidikan dan Ilmu Geografi
Desert ecosystems are among the most climate-sensitive environments on Earth, where rising temperatures, altered precipitation regimes, and increasing aridity threaten ecosystem stability, biodiversity, and ecological functioning. Despite covering more than one-third of the global land surface, a comprehensive understanding of how climate change affects desert ecosystem resilience and the effectiveness of adaptation strategies remains limited. This study conducted a systematic review following the PRISMA framework to evaluate the impacts of climate change on desert ecosystem resilience and to identify effective adaptation and restoration pathways. A total of 16 high-quality studies were selected from 403 records retrieved from the Scopus database. …

Scale-Dependent Drivers Of Demographic Change For American Pikas (Ochotona Princeps) In Glacier National Park, Montana: Local Habitat Characteristics Vs. Regional Climate Trends, Danielle M. Owens
Biology ETDs
Climate change is shifting thermal environments globally, driving range contractions, upslope movement, and poleward shifts across taxa. However, these changes are not uniform: microclimates, shaped by topography, can amplify or decouple operative temperatures from regional trends. The American pika is an ideal model for studying climate-driven population change given its strong site fidelity and thermal sensitivities. We re-surveyed 173 sites in Glacier National Park, originally surveyed in 2007-2010, using an AIC-based model selection to test competing local and regional hypotheses driving three demographic processes: persistence, colonization, and within-patch density change. Pika occupancy increased over the 15-year period, with a net …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Climate change is reshaping coastal ecosystems through gradual warming and increasingly frequent extreme heat events, potentially affecting native and introduced species differently. We experimentally compared the native marine snail Littorina obtusata, a habitat and dietary specialist, to the introduced generalist Littorina littorea under sustained warming and short-term extreme heat. We measured survival and performance metrics, including grazing, growth, and attachment strength, under short- and long-term thermal stress in air and water. L. littorea consistently outperformed L. obtusata, maintaining or increasing function under warming and exhibiting greater survival during simulated heatwaves. Conversely, L. obtusata showed performance declines and higher …

Presentation On Scientific Activities Related To Environmental Law, Mahjoub El Haiba El Haiba
Revue Marocaine de Droit, d'Economie et de Gestion (Moroccan Journal of Law, Economics and Management)
Environmental problems have a global character due to the interdependence of biosphere components, yet they also have significant local dimensions. Climate change and the greenhouse effect, which have intensified in recent decades, pose serious threats to biological balance and endanger human, plant, and animal life. While these issues demand global solutions, local responsibility remains crucial, as the causes and impacts vary across regions. This presentation highlights the scientific activities of the Moroccan Association for Environmental Law, which organizes events—such as roundtables on ozone layer protection—aimed at bridging scientific knowledge and legal frameworks to address both global and local environmental challenges …

Temporal And Spatial Variation In Temperature And Oxygen At The Microscale: Key Niche Axes For Aquatic Life, W. C.E.P. Verberk, David T Bilton
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
To understand animal adaptations, we need accurate estimates of the ecological factors impacting organisms in nature. While temperature is a well-established driver of physiological performance, its effects in aquatic systems are closely linked to water oxygenation. Oxygen levels are expected to differ spatially and fluctuate temporally much more strongly in water than on land, but our understanding of variation in temperature and oxygen levels in freshwaters remains limited. It is essential that environmental variation is recorded at spatial and temporal resolutions relevant to the organism. Here, we analyse spatial and temporal variation in water temperature and oxygenation across running and …

Design For Coastal Futures: Rethinking Space And Time With A More-Than-Human And Transcultural Lens., Serena Pollastri, Juan Montalvan Lume, Louise Mullagh, Suzana Ilic
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Amid the intensifying challenges of climate change, there is an emerging consensus within coastal academic and practitioner networks on the importance of integrating design led-approaches that enhance resilience and foster the long-term adaptation for coastal communities. However, coastal environments present peculiar contexts for design actions, as the movement of water consistently challenges the boundaries between water and land, along with the relational interactions between human and non-human communities—both in cyclical and unpredictable ways. Drawing from the authors’ experiences in tidal coastal and estuarine areas across diverse geographies, this article proposes ways to cultivate design’s response-ability (Haraway, 2016) to the more-than-human …

Common Octopus (Octopus Vulgaris) Blooms Off The Southwest Of The Uk: History, Trends, Causes And Consequences.: Report On Work Package 2: Fisheries Independent Estimates Of Octopus Abundance And Behaviour., Bryce Stewart, Alice Hall, Tully Osmond, Keith Hiscock, Simon Thomas, Emma Sheehan
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Since early 2025, a nearly unprecedented bloom of common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) has occurred off the southwest UK coast. Although native to UK waters, the species is usually rare, making this the largest bloom recorded in at least 75 years. While many octopus have been commercially landed, they have also preyed heavily on economically important shellfish species, including brown crab, European lobster and king scallop. Landings of these species declined sharply in 2025, causing significant hardship for many in inshore fishing communities. In response, a rapid research project was commissioned in August 2025 to investigate the history, causes and impacts …

Vestigial Choreographies: Climate Consciousness In The Long Nineteenth Century, Alexandra A. Rego
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The aims of this project are twofold: (a) to develop a method of theoretical analysis and (b) to put this method into pointed use. In service of (a), I propose a method of choreographic analysis. This method operates relationally, highlighting the production of movement and stillness among and between bodies, objects, and encounters. Choreographic analysis draws from methods typically sequestered to dance studies. Towards aim (b), this project demonstrates the relevance and breadth of choreographic analysis by connecting it to ecocriticism. Throughout this project, I apply choreographic analysis to a diverse set of case studies. I use choreographic analysis to …

Scarce natural resources are utilized substantially to provide the needed global infrastructure requirements. There seems to be a dilemma between development and a carbon-free environment, as the exploration of these resources contributes immensely to climate change due to the emission of greenhouse gases and disruption of the ecosystem. In this paper, an attempt is made to identify various scarce natural resources that are being consumed by the construction industry and their attendant negative impact on climate change is highlighted. Various approaches to conserve construction materials are discussed and the needed infrastructure to be provided is identified. This paper shows that …

Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas, and tropical forests account for roughly one–third of global atmospheric CH4 uptake by soils. Projected warming and more frequent hurricanes in these ecosystems may alter soil CH4 sink strength, as warmer and wetter soils enhance methanogenesis activity. We measured soil CH4 and CO2 efflux during the calendar summer months of 2023 and 2024 alongside continuous records of soil moisture, soil and air temperature, and precipitation in an in–situ warming experiment (TRACE) located in a lowland tropical forest in Puerto Rico, six to seven years after Hurricanes Irma …

Climate-Driven Maritime Hazards And Marine Fuel Oil Spill Risk In The Northwest Passage, Emily Grace Parker
Master's Projects and Capstones
Shipping activity across the Northwest Passage has increased by 46% since 2011 as climate forcing drives sea ice decline, but associated risks to vessels and the environment are underestimated and rarely examined together. A literature review conducted in this study indicated that by 2070, a 5-month navigation window will expose vessels to increasingly unpredictable hazards as the region transforms from an ice- to wave-dominated regime, with wave heights increasing by 10-13% per decade. Ice hazards persist, and vessels operating in early summer and late fall will be exposed to elevated ice accretion risk that can cause capsizing and marine fuel …

Agricultural productivity in East Africa is increasingly threatened by climate-sensitive insect pests. This study investigates the occurrence of key vegetable pests: Brevicoryne brassicae, Plutella xylostella, Maruca vitrata, and Liriomyza mik. A comparative species distribution modelling evaluated pest risk projections under climate change. Four variable selection strategies were tested: case 1 (correlation and variance inflation factor [VIF] filtering across all predictors), case 2 (correlation and VIF filtering of bioclimatic variables merged with other predictors), case 3 (filtering based on environmental values at species occurrence point to approximate realized niches), and case 4 (dimensionality reduction using principal component analysis). These strategies were …

Should I Stay Or Should I Go?: Evaluating The Role Of Climate And Weather Stressors On Moving Decisions In Southeast Florida, Arielle Perry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As climate and weather hazards intensify, Southeast Florida communities face mounting pressures that increasingly influence patterns of migration and immobility. This research examines evidence of climate migration in high flood-risk neighborhoods in Fort Lauderdale by exploring why some populations choose to stay, while others leave, in the context of a changing climate. Using focus group discussions, I investigate how climate and non-climate related factors shape mobility outcomes among residents in the city. Migration outcomes were primarily influenced by negative climate and weather hazard experiences, discontent with existing public in-situ adaptations, and non-climate disamenities, which eroded participants’ sense of place. Voluntary …
