Ai & Chemistry, Evelina Jaleniauskiene

Teaching Repository of AI-Infused Learning

"AI & Chemistry" is a four-week language-learning project based on the action-oriented approach. The project asks students to complete two main tasks: prepare an individual Ignite talk and a partnered podcast on any subtopic related to the use of AI in chemistry. Beyond language skills, the project additionally aims to encourage students’ collaboration with AI-powered tools and enhance their AI literacy. All project steps are detailed in an additional PDF file. The integration of the project is not restricted to a language course; it can be adapted for any university-level communicative course.

Extraterrestrial Prebiotic Molecules: Photochemistry Vs. Radiation Chemistry Of Interstellar Ices, Christopher R. Arumainayagam, Robin T. Garrod, Michael Boyer, Aurland Hay, Si Tong Bao, Jyoti Campbell, Amy Wang, Chris M. Nowak, Michael R. Arumainayagam, Peter J. Hodge Apr 2019

Extraterrestrial Prebiotic Molecules: Photochemistry Vs. Radiation Chemistry Of Interstellar Ices, Christopher R. Arumainayagam, Robin T. Garrod, Michael Boyer, Aurland Hay, Si Tong Bao, Jyoti Campbell, Amy Wang, Chris M. Nowak, Michael R. Arumainayagam, Peter J. Hodge

Faculty Research and Scholarship

In 2016, unambiguous evidence for the presence of the amino acid glycine, an important prebiotic molecule, was deduced based on in situ mass-spectral studies of the coma surrounding cometary ice. This finding is significant because comets are thought to have preserved the icy grains originally found in the interstellar medium prior to solar system formation. Energetic processing of cosmic ices via photochemistry and radiation chemistry is thought to be the dominant mechanism for the extraterrestrial synthesis of prebiotic molecules. Radiation chemistry is defined as the “study of the chemical changes produced by the absorption of radiation of sufficiently high energy …

Model Chemistry Study Of Choline And Urea Based Deep Eutectic Solvents, Libby Nicole Kellat Jan 2018

Model Chemistry Study Of Choline And Urea Based Deep Eutectic Solvents, Libby Nicole Kellat

ETD Archive

Gaussian and GaussView software were utilized to characterize interactions between choline salts and urea, which form a deep eutectic solvent (DES). The initial system studied was choline chloride and urea, at a 1:2 molar ratio, which is also known as reline. Subsequent systems, substituting the chloride anion with other anions (fluoride, bromide, and hydroxide), were studied to show that the system with greater calculated strength of interaction will have more non-ideal physical properties, such as melting point (found in literature). Observations regarding structure related to counterion electron density and hydrogen bonding were made throughout the studies.

The Role Of Low-Energy (≤ 20 Ev) Electrons In Astrochemistry, Michael C. Boyer, Nathalie Rivas, Audrey A. Tran, Clarissa A. Verish, Christopher R. Arumainayagam

Faculty Research and Scholarship

UV photon-driven condensed phase cosmic ice reactions have been the main focus in understanding the extraterrestrial synthesis of complex organic molecules. Low-energy (≤20 eV) electron-induced reactions, on the other hand, have been largely ignored. In this article, we review studies employing surface science techniques to study low-energy electron-induced condensed phase reactions relevant to astrochemistry. In particular, we show that low-energy electron irradiation of methanol ices leads to the synthesis of many of the same complex molecules formed through UV irradiation. Moreover, our results are qualitatively consistent with the hypothesis that high-energy condensed phase radiolysis is mediated by low-energy electron-induced reactions. …

Development And Implementation Of Problem-Based Chemistry Experiments For Engineering Students In A Multi-Disciplinary Course, Tiffany Hesser, Stephanie R. Bunyea Jun 2016

Development And Implementation Of Problem-Based Chemistry Experiments For Engineering Students In A Multi-Disciplinary Course, Tiffany Hesser, Stephanie R. Bunyea

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper will describe the implementation and continuing development of five problem based laboratory experiments in a general chemistry course designed specifically for multiple disciplines of engineering students at the University of New Haven. The Problem Based Laboratory Experiments (PBLE) were developed to provide students with the opportunity to perform and develop experimental procedures working in interdisciplinary teams, while achieving a greater understanding of the role of chemistry in engineering fields. In each PBLE, students first complete a traditional chemistry experiment to gain an understanding of the chemical concepts and to become familiar with executing a written procedure with a …

Understanding College Students’ Exam Process In A General Chemistry Course, Angela Willson Jun 2016

Understanding College Students’ Exam Process In A General Chemistry Course, Angela Willson

Masters Theses

The main way most college chemistry courses assess what a student has learned is through a summative exam. After introductory science courses, such as general chemistry, many students cite poor teaching and disappointing grades in these courses as a reason for dropping out of STEM programs. There has been a lack of qualitative research on students’ experiences of the complete process of taking an exam from start to finish, or the exam process, which includes preparing for an exam, taking an exam, receiving feedback, and responding to feedback after the exam has been graded.

My goal in this exploratory study …

Plant Species Rather Than Climate Greatly Alters The Temporal Pattern Of Litter Chemical Composition During Long-Term Decomposition, Yongfu Li, Na Chen, Mark E. Harmon, Yuan Li, Xiaoyan Cao, Mark A. Chappell, Jingdong Mao Jan 2015

Plant Species Rather Than Climate Greatly Alters The Temporal Pattern Of Litter Chemical Composition During Long-Term Decomposition, Yongfu Li, Na Chen, Mark E. Harmon, Yuan Li, Xiaoyan Cao, Mark A. Chappell, Jingdong Mao

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Publications

A feedback between decomposition and litter chemical composition occurs with decomposition altering composition that in turn influences the decomposition rate. Elucidating the temporal pattern of chemical composition is vital to understand this feedback, but the effects of plant species and climate on chemical changes remain poorly understood, especially over multiple years. In a 10-year decomposition experiment with litter of four species (Acer saccharum, Drypetes glauca, Pinus resinosa, and Thuja plicata) from four sites that range from the arctic to tropics, we determined the abundance of 11 litter chemical constituents that were grouped into waxes, carbohydrates, …

The Effectiveness Of Online Homework Tutorials As Compared To Pen And Paper Tutorials, Molly Shuman Jan 2015

The Effectiveness Of Online Homework Tutorials As Compared To Pen And Paper Tutorials, Molly Shuman

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine if students learn more from completing web based homework (WBHW) compared to completing homework by traditional means with pen and paper. Determining the efficacy of WBHW is important because many schools are being pressured to implement technology in the classroom. To determine the effectiveness of WBHW, student normalized learning gains were calculated from pre and post-test scores for 62 students. Learning gains were then compared when students completed WBHW, traditional homework, or did not complete homework at all, over four units in a high school chemistry class. No difference in learning gains …

Synthesis Of Adjacent-Bridged Benzo-Annelated Cyclam And Studies Of Mono- And Di-Benzo-Annelated Cyclam Derivatives, Amanuel B. Ghidey Jan 2013

Synthesis Of Adjacent-Bridged Benzo-Annelated Cyclam And Studies Of Mono- And Di-Benzo-Annelated Cyclam Derivatives, Amanuel B. Ghidey

Master's Theses and Capstones

A new synthetic methodology for the preparation of a novel adjacent-bridged benzoannelated cyclam is presented. This methodology utilizes reductive ring expansion followed by deallylation to give the desired adjacent-bridged benzo-annelated cyclam. This novel ligand is designed to complex metal cations with a trans coordination geometry. Derivatives of this ligand can be prepared by attaching pendant arms on the nitrogens which can aid as coordinating arms and linkers for potential use of this ligand as bifunctional chelator (BFC).

Coupling chemistry studies have been carried out in an attempt to increase the lipophilicity of a dibenzo-annelated tetracyclic bisaminal and to functionalize at …

Analysis Of Hydrocarbon Materials By Use Of Nonpolar Matrices In Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry (Maldi-Ms)., Stephen Francis Macha Jan 2001

Analysis Of Hydrocarbon Materials By Use Of Nonpolar Matrices In Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry (Maldi-Ms)., Stephen Francis Macha

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this study, polyaromatic hydrocarbon compounds including anthracene, pyrene, acenaphthene and perylene were investigated as nonpolar matrices in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) for the analysis of selected nonpolar analytes. First, the influence of matrix and the analyte ionization potentials on a charge-transfer ionization mechanism were determined. Results of these studies demonstrated that formation of radical molecular cations in MALDI-MS depends on the ionization energy difference between the matrix and the analyte. Charge-transfer ionization occurs only when the ionization potential of the matrix is higher than that of the analyte. Next, nonpolar matrices were investigated for the analysis of …

Theoretical Studies Of Sodium Metal Clusters., Melissa R. Prince Jan 1995

Theoretical Studies Of Sodium Metal Clusters., Melissa R. Prince

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Theoretical methods were used to study small sodium metal clusters. The goal was to find a simple way to model the electronic structure in these clusters that can be used to study large sodium clusters. Monte Carlo studies using Feynman's path integral formulation of quantum mechanics with Bose-Einstein statistics were used to study sodium metal clusters whose valence electrons with opposite spins were paired as bosons. Next, non-atom-based Gaussian s orbitals were used in a Hartree-Fock Monte Carlo procedure. Based on these results, standard quantum chemistry programs were used to test the utility of using non-atom-based basis sets made up …

Study Of The Temperature Dependence Of The Intrinsic Viscosity [Nu] For Polystyrene And Poly (Styrene - Co - Maleic Anhydride), Rong Su

Theses

The Mark-Houwink-Sukaroda (MHS) equation [r|J = K Mva is a very important relationship to relate polymer dilute solution's intrinsic viscosity and polymer's viscosity average molecular weight. But for a wide range of polymer (copolymer) - solvent systems, the constant K and exponent a values are usually not sufficiently available. Fox - Flory and Van Krevelen dilute solution theories are employed to correlate K and a values under different temperatures therefore prove that MHS constant K and exponent a are temperature dependent for polystyrene and styrene-co-maleic anhydride. For polystyrene, the exponent a value changes from 0.7165 at 25C to 0.7327 at …
