Historically, therapy methods made to support neurodivergent individuals have been focused on reducing “challenge behaviors” and modifying behavior to societal standards. Simultaneously, many behavior modification therapies neglect the emotional well-being of the individual. As neurodiversity grows to be accepted as an aspect of diversity, so too must therapy methods change to promote skill building in line with the cultural values and strengths of neurodivergent individuals and promote social-emotional well-being. This group therapy curriculum poses as one such possibility to this change by utilizing DBT and Art Therapy in a group psychoeducation format.

An exploration of combining empowerment theory, photo-based art interventions, and hope-based interventions in a group setting and whether this method can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety and increase feelings of hope, power, and empowerment for those living with chronic conditions and chronic pain. The reviewed literature showed that hope-based art interventions, photo-based art interventions, and empowerment can increase feelings of hope and empowerment and decrease levels of depression and anxiety in people living with chronic conditions. For my honors project, I created an alternative therapy program for children with special needs. Activities were designed to support children with varied needs such as children with autism, ADHD, or learning disabilities. The program utilizes the most successful factors from the fields of art therapy, wilderness therapy, special education, applied behavior analysis, and speech and language therapy the program to form age appropriate, educational, and fun art and wilderness opportunities.

Counteracting Symptoms Of Emotional Suppression With Artistic Expression, Katherine Evarts

Emotional suppression has been implicated as an important feature in the development and maintenance of various disorders including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The current study investigated emotional suppression symptoms, specifically anxiety and negative affect, and the possibility that performing tasks in the visual arts may lessen those symptoms. The current sample was 60 undergraduate students. Half of participants emotionally suppressed during a distressing film clip while the other half did not. Following the clip, half of participants performed an artistic task and half performed a filler task. Participants completed measures of mood, affect, and anxiety at baseline, after the film, and …
