Landslides, Erosion, And Inequality: Assessing Social And Environmental Change At Neighboring Farmsteads In Northern Iceland, Zachary N. Guttman
Landslides, Erosion, And Inequality: Assessing Social And Environmental Change At Neighboring Farmsteads In Northern Iceland, Zachary N. Guttman
Graduate Masters Theses
Hof and Hólar are adjacent farms in Hjaltadalur, North Iceland settled during the Viking Age. While Hof is mentioned prominently in the saga literature, its importance fades. Conversely, Hólar becomes the most powerful farm in North Iceland and the seat of the northern bishop after the introduction of Christianity. This thesis sheds some light on this apparent shift in power by assessing how social and environmental factors may have influenced the relationship between the two sites. Using a program of soil coring and targeted excavation, as well as a novel environmental sampling procedure, this study assesses if environmental factors such …

The Cobb-Pool Site, A Caddo Settlement In The Mountain Creek Valley, S. Alan Skinner
The Cobb-Pool Site, A Caddo Settlement In The Mountain Creek Valley, S. Alan Skinner
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The Cobb-Pool site was excavated in 1985-1986 by the Archaeology Research Program at Southern Methodist University (SMU) before Joe Pool Lake was constructed. The site had been located by the late R. King Harris in the 1930s and Harris collected early Caddo pottery, a Gahagan biface, Alba arrow points, and other chipped stone tools from the surface. SMU located the posthole pattern of three house structures, a large roasting pit, and several other features. Recovered during the excavation was an assemblage that complemented the Harris collection but also included a large sample of maize unlike that found in any other …

Archeological Survey Of The Proposed Sanger Outfall Pipeline Denton County, Texas, Cody S. Davis, Joy C. Tatem, Emily D. Goetschius
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The City of Sanger is proposing to construct the 3.06-kilometer-long Sanger Outfall Pipeline in Denton County, Texas. Alan Plummer Associates, Inc. contracted with AR Consultants, Inc. to survey a 100-foot-wide corridor along the proposed route. AR Consultants, Inc. hypothesized that there would be low potential for both prehistoric and historic cultural resources. These hypotheses were based on the location of the pipeline route in the narrow Ranger Branch floodplain and lack of mapped historic structures remaining in the project area. Fieldwork was conducted on May 31, 2018 under Texas Antiquities permit 8338, during which 19 shovel tests were excavated and …
Kinetic Landscape And Unalloyed Potential: Rethinking The Extractive Landscape Of Michigan's Native Mass Copper Mining Industry, Sean Gohman
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
This dissertation examines the extractive landscape and persistent lifespan of native mass copper mining in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The historic native copper mining industry of Michigan lasted for over a century, though its impacts on the landscape can be broken into two distinct, though overlapping, phases of extractive practice: mass mining and disseminated lode mining. Each mined specific native copper deposits, utilized related but specialized technologies, and relied upon different sources of energy to power its practices. A first, formative phase of mass mining exploited fissures of pure metallic copper using traditional technology and organic sources of fuel. A second …
Environmental Diversity And Resource Use In The Salton Basin Of The Colorado Desert, Lindsay A. Porras
Environmental Diversity And Resource Use In The Salton Basin Of The Colorado Desert, Lindsay A. Porras
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Prehistoric life in the Colorado Desert endured a variety of environmental extremes. Episodic flooding and shifts in the course of the Colorado River resulted in the infilling of the Salton Basin and created a large freshwater lake known as Lake Cahuilla. Settlement along the different segments of the lakeshore is considered variable and may reflect accessibility to nearby viable resources. Remains from archaeological excavations at lakeshore sites show that lacustrine resources and fishing opportunities attracted prehistoric groups to the ancient lake. How prehistoric groups organized themselves and utilized lakeshore and nearby resources offer opportunities to explore the subsistence and mobility …
Geomorphology Of The Connecticut River, Glastonbury Reach, As A Spatial-Temporal Context For Understanding Pre-Contact Settlement Patterns, Jaime Grant
Doctoral Dissertations
The primary objective of this research was to identify the alluvial geomorphic filters that obscure remnant settlement patterns and in so doing refine our understanding of Pre-contact settlement systems during the Archaic Period and Woodland Periods, a time of environmental change followed by settlement and subsistence shifts.
Statistical analysis of Connecticut’s site distribution, historic planform analysis and partial reconstruction of the Glastonbury Reach during the Woodland Period revealed patterns in the Late Archaic through Woodland Periods (5000–300B.P.) floodplain site distributions. This research demonstrates that the development of a meandering alluvial reach coincided with a shift in settlement that began in …

Sediments in the Pearl River delta have the potential to record the weathering response of this river basin to climate change since 9.5 ka, most notably weakening of the Asian monsoon since the Early Holocene (∼8 ka). Cores from the Pearl River delta show a clear temporal evolution of weathering intensity, as measured by K/Al, K/Rb, and clay mineralogy, that shows deposition of less weathered sediment at a time of weakening monsoon rainfall in the Early-Mid Holocene (6.0-2.5 ka). This may reflect an immediate response to a less humid climate, or more likely reduced reworking of older deposits from river …

Sedimentology Of Historic And Prehistoric Deposits In The Drainage Basin Of Deep River And Muddy Creek On The Piedmont Of North Carolina, Victoria Leanne Spurgeon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Deep River and Muddy Creek flow across a granitic and volcanic terrain intruded by diabase dikes in the Piedmont physiographic province of central North Carolina. Geoarchaeological and sedimentological investigation of these Piedmont streams included fourteen trenches dug at four floodplain localities. Soils in these trenches were described using standard soil taxonomy and sampled for particle-size, magnetic susceptibility, and mineralogical analyses.;Increased upland erosion rates, after European settlement, left more than a meter of historic sediments in some areas of the floodplains. A paleosol, indicated by an Ab horizon, records the floodplain surface at the time of European contact. This paleosol, dated …

The Dos Republicas Project: Phase Ii Archaeological Investigations At A Proposed Coal Strip Mine, Maverick County, Texas, Herbert G. Uecker
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
During February and March 1992, the Center for Archaeological Research of The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted an intensive investigation of a proposed coal strip mine near Eagle Pass, Maverick County, Texas. Twenty-seven previously unrecorded archaeological sites were discovered and several that were recorded in 1981 were reexamined. Postulated cultural affiliations include the Late Paleo-Indian, Middle-to-Late Archaic, Late Prehistoric, and Historic periods. Eight sites were found to be particularly significant because of their potential for listing in the National Register of Historic Places or designation as state archeological landmarks. After review of the results of the investigation by …
Gadara Of The Decapolis, Lee Maxwell
Gadara Of The Decapolis, Lee Maxwell
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
The topic of this dissertation is "Gadara of the Decapolis." The ruins of this ancient Decapolis city are situated in and to the west of the modern village of Umm Qais in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The present-day village is located about thirty kilometers northwest of the Jordanian city of Irbid and approximately ten kilometers southeast of the Sea of Galilee. The site lies atop the Jordanian plateau, which drops off sharply to the north toward the Yarmuk River and to the south toward the Wadi al-'Arab before it gradually lowers to the west in a number of terraces …

Some Views On The Archaeology Of The Driftless Area In Iowa, R. Clark Mallam
Some Views On The Archaeology Of The Driftless Area In Iowa, R. Clark Mallam
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The archaeology of the Driftless Area in Iowa encompasses a time frame extending from approximately 10,000 B.C. to Euroamerican contact. Researchers have defined a series of prehistoric adaptations for this period which can be conveniently grouped under two major modes of production: hunting/gathering and hunting/gathering-horticultural. By analyzing the evolution of these modes it may be possible to define prehistoric belief systems and the manner in which they functioned as significant components in the adaptation process. This combined scientific-humanistic approach may contribute toward a broader understanding of the prehistory of this region.

The Texas Archaic: A Symposium, Thomas R. Hester
Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
The papers published in this volume were presented at a symposium entitled "The Texas Archaic 11” held in San Antonio on November 2, 1975, during the annual meeting of the Texas. Archeological Society. Of those papers delivered during this symposium, only one, "Archaic Diets and Food Economies" (by V. M. Bryant, Jr.), is not presently available for publication.
The present format has been utilized to insure rapid and economical publication of the symposium papers. The papers are primarily status reports, describing the current state of regional knowledge of the Archaic or dealing with specific aspects of the Archaic lifeway. As …
