“These They Cut In Pieces, Bones And All…”: An Examination Of Pequot Subsistence Practices During The Early 17th Century At The Calluna Hill Site, Groton, Connecticut, Megan V. Goldstein

Graduate Masters Theses

Beginning in the early 17th century, the arrival of Europeans in southern New England led to rapid changes and cultural transformation as Indigenous lifeways were impacted by the introduction of foreign materials, cultural structures, and the onset of colonialism. Archaeological research has helped to demonstrate how individuals and communities navigated the pressures of colonialism and developed ways to survive and persist in the centuries that followed. The early 17th century is an archaeologically underrepresented time period in southern New England, limiting an understanding of how Indigenous people initially interpreted foreign material culture, negotiated changes in their lifeways, and in particular, …

Governing Cyberterrorism In Indonesia: Resilience And Gaps In The Draft Cybersecurity Law (Ruu Kks 2025), Eko Setyo Utomo

Indonesia Law Review

Indonesia’s accelerating digital transformation and persistent terrorist threats expose both resilience gains and governance gaps in its cybersecurity framework. This article examines the Draft Law on Cybersecurity and Resilience (RUU KKS 2025), which consolidates the authority of the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) and strengthens protections for critical information infrastructure. While the bill enhances technical resilience and institutional coordination, it remains silent on cyberterrorism, leaving statutory, institutional, and international gaps. Drawing on cybersecurity theory, securitization theory, and hybrid warfare theory, the study argues that resilience without terrorism-specific provisions is strategically insufficient. Comparative analysis with the United Kingdom’s Terrorism Act, …

Education For A Shared Society In Wartime: A Faculty Of Education Dean’S Autoethnography, Ilana Paul-Binyamin

The Qualitative Report

My autoethnographic study emerged in the wake of the Hamas–Israel war that began on October 7, 2023, placing me in a dual position as both an academic leader and a member of a society in crisis. As Dean of a multicultural Faculty of Education, I reflect on how the war disrupted longstanding efforts to promote shared society education between Jews and Arabs. Drawing on personal narratives, reflective fieldnotes, and case studies from campus life, I explore how trauma, fear, and political polarization undermined the multicultural frameworks I had developed over years of practice. I document moments of rupture—between students, faculty, …

The Date And Function Of The Horizontal Gutter-Like Water Channels Along The Walls Of The Herodian Temple Mount, Nahshon Szanton, Shlomit Weksler-Bdolah Dec 2025

The Date And Function Of The Horizontal Gutter-Like Water Channels Along The Walls Of The Herodian Temple Mount, Nahshon Szanton, Shlomit Weksler-Bdolah

'Atiqot

Elongated channels, some of which preserved traces of plaster, run across the upper courses of the western and southern walls of the Herodian Temple Mount. These were previously explained as gutters, cut and utilized during the Byzantine and Early Islamic periods (or later), or as the negatives of floors of a three-story building that had once stood adjacent to the western Temple Mount wall. This article challenges these interpretations, arguing that the channels were cut exclusively in the Herodian courses of the wall, with no evidence of continuation following later renovations. Based on similar channels carved into first-century CE high-standing …

How The Coherent Detector Works In Spread Spectrum Signals, Louay Habib Skef, Aymen Mohammed Khodayer, Jenan J. Abdulkareem Dec 2025

How The Coherent Detector Works In Spread Spectrum Signals, Louay Habib Skef, Aymen Mohammed Khodayer, Jenan J. Abdulkareem

Al-Farahidi Expert Systems Journal

This research investigates the detection of direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) signals, comparing the performance of a traditional energy detector with that of a cross-correlation detector. While energy detectors are widely used, they suffer from reduced sensitivity at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and require accurate noise power estimation. In contrast, the cross-correlation detector utilizes the processing gain of DSSS signals to achieve higher detection accuracy without needing prior noise estimation. Using MATLAB simulations, Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves were generated for both detectors. Results show that the cross-correlation detector achieves up to 30% higher probability of detection (PD) at a …

Piracy And Patriotism: The Forces Of Resistance In Viet Nam’S Video Game Industry During The 2000s To The Early 2010s Through The Case Of 7554, Dat Vo Dec 2025

Piracy And Patriotism: The Forces Of Resistance In Viet Nam’S Video Game Industry During The 2000s To The Early 2010s Through The Case Of 7554, Dat Vo

Rushton Journal of Undergraduate Humanities Research

This paper examines cultural resistance in Viet Nam’s video game industry through the case of 7554, the country’s first indie, first-person shooter. Piracy, normalized by economic hardship and distrust of capitalist systems, both enabled access and undermined domestic creativity. Viet Nam’s shifting intellectual property laws reflected broader balancing between socialist sovereignty and global economic integration. By situating 7554 within Viet Nam’s historical context from colonial resistance to socio-economic reforms, this study argues that piracy functioned not only as economic necessity but also as a decolonial practice shaping cultural sovereignty.

Hasan Al-Banna And Islamic Education Politics: Weaving The Mind, Heart, And Spirit Of Struggle From Egypt To The World, Syamsul Kurniawan, Maimunah .

Journal Of Middle East and Islamic Studies

This article examines Hasan al-Banna's thoughts on Islamic education politics, with a focus on the integration of three main dimensions: heart, mind, and the spirit of struggle, which form the foundation of the educational system he proposed from Egypt for the world. Through the Ikhwanul Muslimin movement, which originated in Egypt, al-Banna introduced an education that unified spirituality, intellectualism, and political struggle into a cohesive whole. This study employs the Atomic Habits theory by James Clear (2019), which emphasizes small, consistent changes that lead to significant impacts, to understand how al-Banna’s ideas on Islamic education can be viewed as a …

Teachers' Perspectives On Humane Education Implementation, Rebecca Ann Bartaway Dec 2025

Teachers' Perspectives On Humane Education Implementation, Rebecca Ann Bartaway

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Humane education (HE) encompasses multiple concepts, including animal ethics, ecological environment, and social justice. The problem prompting this study was that individuals who have graduated from a higher education HE program face challenges in successfully integrating HE into their K–12 classrooms. Grounded by Weil's solutionary approach to HE, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the teaching experiences of individuals who graduated from a higher education HE program and successfully integrated HE into their classrooms. Participants were purposefully sampled from a small population of educators who completed a U.S. degree or certificate program in HE and successfully …

A Comparative Study Of Conceptual Metaphors In Indonesian And Chinese Economic Headlines, Hendy Yuniarto Dec 2025

A Comparative Study Of Conceptual Metaphors In Indonesian And Chinese Economic Headlines, Hendy Yuniarto

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

This study examines how economic concepts are metaphorically constructed in Indonesian and Chinese news headlines. Employing the Lakoff and Johnson's framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, the study analyzes and compares conceptual metaphors in economic news headlines from CNBC Indonesia and China Business Network published between January and April 2025. Employing a qualitative methodology guided by MIPVU, the study mapped conceptual economic metaphors in a corpus of 500 economic news headlines. The investigation demonstrates a significant overlap in the conceptualization of economic events in both languages: economic actions are physical movements, business is a natural force, economy is a competition, money …

Killing Like A State: Explaining The Edge Cases Of Rebel Perpetration Of Wartime Genocidal Violence, Cheng Xu Dec 2025

Killing Like A State: Explaining The Edge Cases Of Rebel Perpetration Of Wartime Genocidal Violence, Cheng Xu

Government: Faculty Publications

Genocide scholarship overwhelmingly identifies states as the primary perpetrators of genocidal violence. While non-state armed groups, particularly pro-government militias, have been implicated in genocide, rebel-perpetrated wartime genocidal violence remains exceedingly rare. This paper argues that state-centric explanations of genocide can be exported to explain these edge cases. I argue that four high-threshold conditions must align for rebels to commit wartime genocidal violence: (1) effective territorial control, (2) the dispensability of civilian support, (3) a rigid and exclusionary ideological program, and (4) perceptions of threat, typically constitutive rather than military, where the target group is framed as incompatible with the nascent …

China's Spy Network In America: A People's War Against An Open House: America Needs To Confront The Reality Of The New Cold War, Shaomin Li Dec 2025

China's Spy Network In America: A People's War Against An Open House: America Needs To Confront The Reality Of The New Cold War, Shaomin Li

Management Faculty Publications

The article discusses China's extensive espionage activities in the United States, framing it as part of a broader "people's war" strategy employed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). It highlights historical cases of espionage, such as those involving Qian Xuesen and Bo Jiang, to illustrate the ongoing threat posed by Chinese intelligence efforts, which leverage both state-sponsored and civilian participation. The article contrasts the CCP's ruthless approach to espionage with the U.S. legal system's more restrained response, emphasizing the asymmetry in their respective strategies. It concludes by urging the U.S. to recognize and confront the realities of this new Cold …

Biotechnologies And The Treaty Gap: Why Biological Weapons Governance Is Falling Behind; And Some Thoughts On How To Fix It, James Giordano Dec 2025

Biotechnologies And The Treaty Gap: Why Biological Weapons Governance Is Falling Behind; And Some Thoughts On How To Fix It, James Giordano

Strategic Insights

This commentary examines how rapid advances in biotechnology are outpacing the ability of existing international agreements, especially the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), to effectively govern emerging risks. Dr. Giordano explains that technologies such as synthetic biology, gene editing, and AI-assisted biological design are creating capabilities that blur the line between legitimate research and potential misuse, leaving enforcement and oversight systems outdated. These developments expose a “treaty gap” in which governance does not match technological reality, undermining global norms against biological weaponization. Strengthening international governance frameworks, improving transparency and verification mechanisms, and incorporating emerging science into treaty language will be essential …

Legal Issues Arising From The Military Use Of Ai-Supported Biometrics, Marten Zwanenburg Dec 2025

Legal Issues Arising From The Military Use Of Ai-Supported Biometrics, Marten Zwanenburg

International Law Studies

Biometrics is increasingly used by armed forces for a variety of purposes, such as access control, the registration of detainees, and increasingly also targeting. The capabilities of biometric systems are considerably strengthened when they are enabled by artificial intelligence (AI). This article analyzes legal questions that are raised by the military use of such AI-supported biometrics. It argues that relevant legal frameworks are International Humanitarian Law, international human rights law, and the right to privacy in particular, as well as data protection law. The article finds that arguably, IHL may require the use of (AI-supported) biometrics in certain situations if …

In The Trenches: The Value Of Value In Contemporary Philippine Fiction, Glenn Diaz Dec 2025

In The Trenches: The Value Of Value In Contemporary Philippine Fiction, Glenn Diaz

Kritika Kultura

In this critical introduction, I investigate the possibilities in as well as the potential limits of the notion of “halaga” or value in thinking about the works that are part of this Kritika Kultura special literary section on contemporary Philippine fiction. I argue that the value of value as a critical paradigm is simultaneously formal, political, thematic, and practical, as much an aesthetic curiosity as it is a discursive dilemma, and that any inquiry into what is valued in Philippine fiction today necessarily inquires into how one lives at a fraught historical moment marked by persistent structural violence. I situate …

Belliphonic Tolkien: Listening To The Wars In Middle-Earth, Ali Mirzabayati Dec 2025

Belliphonic Tolkien: Listening To The Wars In Middle-Earth, Ali Mirzabayati

Journal of Tolkien Research

This paper explores the belliphonic—the sonic dimension of warfare—in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, focusing on the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. While modern warfare studies emphasize the sounds of mechanized combat, the acoustic landscapes of ancient and medieval battles remain understudied. Drawing on recent scholarship by Clauss, Lummer, Potthoff, and Pretzer, this study situates Tolkien’s soundscapes within both historical and mythological traditions. Tolkien’s immersion in classical, Anglo-Saxon, and Norse literature, combined with his experience of World War I, enabled him to create richly layered battle sounds in which horns, cries, silence, and environmental …

Compliance With International Humanitarian Law And Peacebuilding In Post-Conflict Kosovo, Avni H. Alidemaj, Alban Maliqi, Johne Doone, Valdon Bytyci

Hasanuddin Law Review

Unprecedented violent conflicts occurred worldwide during the 20th century. Millions of lives lost, infrastructure destroyed, and generational effects on post-conflict nations. Meanwhile, international humanitarian law was developed to reduce conflict damage. Government parties to International Humanitarian Law (IHL) conventions have enforceable obligations to implement, promote, and perform their duties, helping to promote their wider recognition and enforcement. During the Kosovo conflict, Serbian military commanders and the police violated international humanitarian law by breaking fundamental precepts. The study of the Kosovo conflict prioritizes criminal accountability and historical documentation over the enduring societal consequences of violations of IHL. There are not many …

Egypt, Israel, And The Levant: The Merneptah Stele's Role In Shaping Historical Narratives, Quincy Adams Dec 2025

Egypt, Israel, And The Levant: The Merneptah Stele's Role In Shaping Historical Narratives, Quincy Adams

Studia Antiqua

This paper investigates the Merneptah Stele, an exceptional artifact from the reign of Pharaoh Merneptah during Egypt’s New Kingdom, to reassess the stele’s role in understanding early Israelite identity. The Merneptah Stele is among the earliest known references to “Israel,” and consequently has sparked discussion among scholars regarding this early group’s socio-political and cultural status during the late Bronze Age. By examining the stele in conjunction with the inscriptions of the Cour de la Cachette in the Great Hypostyle Hall at Karnak, this study situates the Merneptah Stele within the broader historical and cultural framework of the New Kingdom to …

Ai And Naval Operations, Wolff Heintschel Von Heinegg Dec 2025

Ai And Naval Operations, Wolff Heintschel Von Heinegg

International Law Studies

Artificial intelligence systems in naval operations are reality. They enhance naval capabilities in various respects. Autonomous surface and underwater vehicles depend on such systems. Moreover, these systems contribute to threat detection and identification, to real-time strategy optimization, and to intelligence analysis. The present article provides a brief analysis of the legality of AI systems used by naval forces under the law of naval warfare, which, in many respects, differs considerably from the law of land warfare. Accordingly, it is necessary to distinguish between attacks from the sea against targets on land and attacks against targets at sea and in the …

Feminicide and gender violence cases in the last several decades in Puerto Rico have continuously increased, suggesting that this problem becomes worse as time passes. This study, therefore, focuses on identifying actionable insights that paint a picture of the impact it has on women over the age of 18 in Puerto Rico. In order to achieve this objective, the study relies on a strong theoretical framework that is made up of Foucauldian discourse analysis, necropolitics, and sexual scripts theories. One of the core findings of this research is that Puerto Rico’s colonial history and cultural norms sustain a cycle of …

“Mud, Mud, Mud To The Right Of Us”: How Canadian Reconnaissance Regiments Adapted To The Terrain Of The Scheldt Estuary, Victoria Sotvedt

Canadian Military History

During the Battle of the Scheldt, Canadian reconnaissance regiments played a crucial role in gathering information for their attached divisions and participating in combat operations. To be effective in this role, these regiments needed to maintain a high level of mobility and be adept at operating at or beyond the divisional front. As First Canadian Army moved into the Scheldt Estuary in autumn 1944, the reconnaissance regiments’ mobility and efficiency were challenged by the difficult terrain. These regiments therefore developed new techniques to allow them to continue fulfilling their role despite these challenges, including the adoption of new weaponry and …
