Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

Interprofessional education (IPE) is a training modality that aims to help two or more disciplines learn about, from, and with each other, that enhances outcomes for clients (WHO, 2010). Two faculty members, one from counseling and one from occupational therapy, collaborated to design and implement a virtual pilot IPE event focused on enhancing student role delineation in interdisciplinary treatment teams, communication, and professional behaviors. Using guided questions provided prior to the event, students shared information about their disciplines, roles in client treatment teams, professional responsibilities, and potential collaboration opportunities between occupational therapists and counselors. Background

Hepatic encephalopathy is a common cause of altered mental status for patients with decompensated cirrhosis. Their conditions typically improve with high-dose laxatives; if not optimally treated, can develop neurologic sequelae like cerebral edema and herniation. In severe cases, despite normal systemic oxygenation, hyperammonemia may result in mixed restricted diffusion patterns that partially resemble those seen in hypoxic-anoxic brain injury.

Given the individual and public health impact of bereavement, discovering what people perceive as helpful after loss can improve interventions. In contrast to national projects, this project focused on two hospitals in a Midwestern hospital system.

A survey was developed to assess the work of chaplains with next of kin following a death, to assess the awareness and helpfulness of persons and organizations in the community, and to ask what people had done, said, or given that was helpful, or what respondents wished people had done. From a list of 283 people invited to respond, 52 completed the survey.

A 68-year-old male with a history of metastatic bladder cancer and urinary obstruction presented with intractable hiccups and chest pain is presented in this case. He was found to have a unilateral pleural effusion in addition to ipsilateral renal metastasis abutting the diaphragm. Imaging revealed empyema. Thoracentesis revealed positive cultures and a lack of malignant cells on cytology. Comorbid urinary obstruction and urinary tract infection suggested the rare diagnosis of an infected urinothorax. Thoracentesis also revealed pleural fluid creatinine greater than serum creatinine, meeting the most specific diagnostic criteria for urinothorax and establishing the diagnosis. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional descriptive research study was to explore nurses’ comfort levels toward caring for dying patients and what factors influence the bedside nurses’ comfort levels in providing end-of-life care in an acute care hospital setting. A convenience sample (N=63) of RNs voluntarily participated in an online survey from January 2025 to March 2025 that provided direct patient care. Data was collected through Question Pro. Problem: A Residential Care facility utilizes paper charting causing limited access to vital information such as code status, allergies, and/or diet for those caring for the resident.

Context: Exceptional charting only when a resident’s condition changes may not provide enough vital information for the caregiver to administer medication or provide proper support during an emergency, such as the resident’s DNR status.

This article describes the journey of a small dog as she is trained to be a therapy dog. Requirements for training and regulations to be a therapy dog are discussed. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) Doctorate of Nursing (DNP) project was to create and evaluate the impact of high-fidelity simulation-based training (SBT) on graduate nursing students’ knowledge and confidence in diagnosing and treating septic shock. Outcomes were measured with pre- and post-simulation tests featuring competency questions and Likert-scale confidence ratings.

Accordingly, the two research questions guiding this project were: (1) How effective is high-fidelity simulation training in improving students’ knowledge and competence in managing septic shock? Secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare, immunologically driven disorder with a high mortality rate. It is typically diagnosed on the basis of clinical and laboratory criteria. We present the case of a 53-year-old woman with multiple previous hospitalizations for fever of unknown origin and fatigue. Her workup ultimately led to a diagnosis of HLH. We discuss the presentation, diagnostic criteria, and clinical treatment of secondary HLH to guide workup and management for future patients affected by this rare disease.

Problem. The physiological and psychological stress caused by adverse social conditions affecting minority groups impacts their ability to function in academia, the workplace, and other areas of life.

Purpose. This literature review examines the impact of minority stress on nurses' and nursing students' perceptions of their environment and overall satisfaction with the profession.

Search Strategy. Articles for this literature review were found using electronic databases CINAHL and PubMed.

Background: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is the most common pediatric cancer, with significant advancements in treatment leading to over 90% five-year event-free survival rates in developed countries. However, disruptions in health behaviors during treatment, such as diet, activity, and sleep, can negatively impact treatment tolerance and increase risks of late effects. This scoping review aimed to assess the breadth of existing behavioral health interventions designed to improve immediate and long-term health outcomes for children and adolescents receiving treatment for ALL.
