Use Of Adventure To Address Play Deprivation In Children And Teens Raised In Conflict, Kristin Salisbury, Mary Jan Greer
Use Of Adventure To Address Play Deprivation In Children And Teens Raised In Conflict, Kristin Salisbury, Mary Jan Greer
Fall 2024 OTD Capstone Symposium
Youth raised in conflict often experience extrinsic and intrinsic factors that contribute to play deprivation and occupational injustice. These factors are reviewed through interviews with stakeholders and participants and observed while embedded in an adventure program for foster and adopted youth and in a refugee camp for families and children. Current literature reveals underlying factors that contribute to play deprivation for these youth, including conditions resulting from trauma and developmental delays due to the absence of play engagement. The poster reviews the programmatic components necessary for addressing these factors through whole-person play-based programming. It considers using adventure-based programming to introduce …

An Intervention For Youth Impacted By Parental Incarceration: A Mentoring Program Effectiveness From The Caregiver’S Perspective, Sunni Sarah Iris Ann Walters
Online Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the effectiveness of the Amachi mentoring program in supporting children impacted by familial incarceration from the caregivers perspective. Using a qualitative approach, we conducted two focus groups with three participants in each to assess the program's impact across four key areas: behavior, emotions, school performance, and social interactions. We hypothesized that Amachi would have a positive impact on the children they serve. The findings indicate that caregivers perceive the program as beneficial, suggesting potential improvements in various aspects of the children’s lives. These results highlight the potential of the Amachi program to support the development and resilience …
Implementation Of A Standardized Screening And Referral Process For Social Determinants Of Health For Families With Children Within Two Rural Health Clinics, Laura Britton Stace
Implementation Of A Standardized Screening And Referral Process For Social Determinants Of Health For Families With Children Within Two Rural Health Clinics, Laura Britton Stace
Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current
Abstract
The American Academy of Pediatrics Bright Futures Guidelines recommends social determinants of health (SDOH) screening at well-child checks (WCCs). Social determinants of health are environmental factors, including food accessibility, mental health, and substance use, that can affect quality of life.
Rural health clinics (RHCs) in a county in Virginia did not routinely use a standardized screener to identify pediatric SDOH risks, nor did they have a standardized referral process for identifying SDOH risks. A hospital community needs assessment found that over 20% of the county households were below the federal poverty level. It is estimated that many children in …
The San Francisco Cultural Districts Program: A Potential Answer To Fighting Gentrification And Uplifting Culture And Neighborhoods, Boston Rizal Palacios
The San Francisco Cultural Districts Program: A Potential Answer To Fighting Gentrification And Uplifting Culture And Neighborhoods, Boston Rizal Palacios
Undergraduate Honors Theses
As San Francisco neighborhoods are rapidly changing due to gentrification and displacing longtime residents and small businesses, the San Francisco Cultural Districts Program was established in 2018 with the goal to disrupt gentrification by prioritizing the voices of people within these disinvested neighborhoods. Through analyzing government documents, news articles, and conducting personal interviews, I am conducting a hypothesis-generating, qualitative case study on one of the cultural districts, SOMA Pilipinas. This is to determine if the San Francisco Cultural Districts Program is an effective model in giving impacted communities more of a role in decisions about how to best protect their …

High School Principals’ Experiences Implementing The Whole-Child Approach To Education, Elise Heaton
Dissertations
The prevalence of the whole-child approach to education has grown significantly as schools recognize that students' needs extend beyond academics to include their social, emotional, mental, and physical well-being. This approach emphasizes nurturing all aspects of a child's development to ensure they thrive in a diverse and ever-evolving world. This phenomenological qualitative case study explores the lived experiences of high school principals as they implement the whole-child approach to education. Through data collected via various methods, including interviews, document analysis, and site observations, this study provides an in-depth examination of how principals navigate the complex demands of addressing the multifaceted …
A Phenomenological Study On The Adult Biological Child's Experience In A Family That Fostered, Melba Richards-Garcia
A Phenomenological Study On The Adult Biological Child's Experience In A Family That Fostered, Melba Richards-Garcia
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Families involved in the fostering process experience a wide range of situations which can impact all family members—both positively and negatively. This includes the biological children of foster parents. While recent research has started to focus on providing support for foster families, most studies primarily concentrate on training and assistance for foster parents. When it comes to the effects of being a biological child within a foster family there exists a gap in the literature regarding long-term support for these family members. The objective of this study is to explore the retrospective experiences of biological children of foster families, who …

Families seeking asylum in the United States are often placed in detention centers after fleeing crime, violence, and government ineffectiveness in their countries. Migration brings more hardship, terror, and trauma. The cumulative psychological and social effects from detention need to be better understood. This exploratory study examines the effects of detention and family separation on immigrant children’s psychosocial wellbeing after released. We recruited 81 Central American children previously detained with their parents to assess their wellbeing since release. A third of the children had been separated from their parents during detention. Over a third of parents and less than a …

Compounding Barriers To Access: A Study Of Tax Policies And Practices That Exclude Women With Disabilities In Poverty, Cynthia Minh
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
A single parent on social assistance who cannot afford the medical interventions they require does not make enough money to offset their medical costs through taxes. A woman who experiences chronic symptoms of fibromyalgia and struggles to get diagnosed in their adulthood feels dependent on a doctor who is unsupportive of their disability benefit applications for chronic pain medication. A person who experiences paranoia is unable to access the tax information needed to apply for rental assistance programs because they forgot to complete a step when filing for a name and gender change. These are stories from individuals who have …

The Impacts Of Co-Occurring Developmental Language Disorder On The Academic, Interpersonal, And Behavioral Profiles Of Children With Adhd, Kirsten M. Hannig Russell, Sean M. Redmond
Faculty Publications
Purpose: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a multifactorial disorder that has been linked to increased risk for behavioral, academic, and interpersonal problems. Developmental language disorder (DLD) has also been linked to poor outcomes in these areas. The presence of co-occurring disorders in children’s profiles is generally associated with poorer outcomes relative to profiles consisting of only one disorder. This study investigated the extent to which co-occurring DLD in children already identified with ADHD presented increased risk for severity of their primary ADHD symptoms, the presence of secondary behavioral problems, and/or increased problems in the tertiary areas of academic performance and interpersonal …

Delinquency And Inadvertent Neglect As Byproducts Of Work-Addicted Parents, Shelley Sasser
Delinquency And Inadvertent Neglect As Byproducts Of Work-Addicted Parents, Shelley Sasser
Bridges: A Journal of Student Research
Over the past decade, discussions of work addiction throughout academic literature have increased substantially. However, the relationship between childhood outcomes and parental work addiction has yet to be explored. In this study, I set out to identify functions of parent-child relationships and comparisons of situational outcomes stemming from work addiction in relation to social determinants such as income, ethnicity, and gender, along with resulting stratification. The degree to which children benefit from features of lifestyles typically associated with high household incomes, such as financial security, health care benefits, access to educational resources, and neighborhood socioeconomic advantage, wherein parental work-addiction might …

A Quantitative Evaluation Of An Innovative Family Treatment Court Program For Families With Co-Occurring Child Maltreatment And Substance Use., Ashley Rose Logsdon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Substance use is linked to out-of-home care in over 40% of child welfare cases. This dissertation evaluated the experience of families with co-occurring child maltreatment and substance use in Family Recovery Court (FRC), an innovative family treatment court involving the judicial system, child welfare system, and behavioral health. Study One used a quasi-experimental propensity score match design, using administrative data and the North Carolina Family Assessment Scale for 68 families. The FRC group experienced better safety (substantiated repeat maltreatment), permanency (reunification), and well-being outcomes. The percentage of the FRC group who achieved reunification (81.2%) was significantly higher than that of …

Public Health Emergencies And The Second Amendment, Amy Swearer, Paul J. Larkin
Public Health Emergencies And The Second Amendment, Amy Swearer, Paul J. Larkin
Denver Law Review
For many decades, gun control advocates, hoping to shift the terms of the debate to more favorable terrain, have argued that gun violence should be viewed primarily through the lens of public health. In September 2023, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and New Mexico Secretary of Health Patrick Allen pushed that rationale to its extreme and beyond. Under the auspices of the state’s public health emergency laws, they issued an executive order and agency directive that effectively eliminated the right of ordinary citizens to bear arms in public in the state’s most populous county. That attempt to circumvent the …

This phenomenological study explored the impact of generational trauma on educational spaces. This research involved narratives from eleven participants with diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds and explored the nuanced ways in which generational trauma impacted the academic settings and how it influences students' social, emotional, and academic experiences. It identified three primary themes: the perception of generational trauma, its impact on academic experiences, and the coping mechanisms employed by individuals. Findings revealed that participants experience innate pressure to excel, often driven by familial expectations, alongside a lack of support which hindered academic motivation. Coping mechanisms such as various involvement in …
