Introduction. This study was conducted to determine the health literacy on physical therapy (PT) among senior citizens with physical disability and community health workers (CHWs). Specifically, it identified the sociodemographic profile of the CHWs and senior citizens with physical disability, their extent of health literacy on PT as to prose, document and numeracy and how health policies, availability of PT programs, and available equipment and facilities for the rendition of PT services affect their health literacy.
Methods. This study employed a descriptive research design. The respondents of the study involved 18 CHWs and 29 senior citizens. It was conducted in …
Introduction: Failed Futures? (Post)-Colonial Planning And Future-Making In Tanzania, Ulrike Lindner
Introduction: Failed Futures? (Post)-Colonial Planning And Future-Making In Tanzania, Ulrike Lindner
Zamani: A Journal of African Historical Studies
Future-making and planning as social practices are strongly related to the
surrounding society’s political structures and power relations. In this
special issue of ZAMANI, we conceptualize future-making as physical
changes and social practices that shape future conditions by making future
an issue in the present. We analyse how different approaches to the future,
and also surprises and unintended side-effects, have informed the politics
and practices of planning in Tanzania and its various regions.1 When we ask:
“Failed Futures?” we address future in the plural, a term that has diffused
into historical scholarship rather recently and originates from
futurology/future studies, known …
Nurturing Traditional Midwifery And Medicine: The Entangled Path Of Health Integration In Post-Independence Kilombero, Tanzania, Veronica Kimani
Nurturing Traditional Midwifery And Medicine: The Entangled Path Of Health Integration In Post-Independence Kilombero, Tanzania, Veronica Kimani
Zamani: A Journal of African Historical Studies
This paper focuses on the Tanzanian government’s ambitious endeavour to enhance health, particularly midwifery services following independence. The initial strategy by the government involved promoting Western medicine by establishing healthcare facilities and training medical personnel. However, the strain of a burgeoning population and limited resources soon became evident, prompting the government to recognise the need for the incorporation of traditional medicine, previously overlooked. This integration posed its own set of obstacles, as the focus on herbal remedies overshadowed crucial aspects of conventional midwifery, such as rituals. While research has shown the resolve of the government towards medical integration between different …

Zamani: A Journal of African Historical Studies
This is the maiden issue of Zamani: A Journal of African Historical Studies. It charts the beginning of a continental journal that is based in an African higher education institution within Africa. It breaks away from the traditional historical journals in Africa of being national or regional and at best being owned and operated by scholars and institutions from Europe and North America. With this maiden issue, the journal seeks to demonstrate that it is part of the bigger knowledge decolonization movement. It seeks to influence historical writing and research by giving more Africanness in ownership, operations, production and knowledge …
Medical Mission Futures: German Protestant Missionaries And Modern Healthcare In Southern Highlands, Tanzania,1891–1940, Luoneko Kaduma
Medical Mission Futures: German Protestant Missionaries And Modern Healthcare In Southern Highlands, Tanzania,1891–1940, Luoneko Kaduma
Zamani: A Journal of African Historical Studies
The history of colonial missionaries in Tanzania is marked by a complex interplay between evangelical efforts and the provision of Western biomedicine, which functioned as crucial mechanisms for conversion and cultural transformation. Missionaries viewed the improvement of African health as a project aimed at attracting converts and propagating Christianity. However, the available data indicates that, instead of genuinely expressing interest in converting to Christianity, the majority of Africans primarily sought mission medical assistance for medical reasons while maintaining strong connections to their traditional beliefs and healing practices. This paper, drawing from archival documents, ethnographic accounts, and missionary writings, focuses on …

The Nigerian Diaspora And National Development: Contributions, Challenges, And Lessons From Other Countries, Sharkdam Wapmuk, Oluwatooni Akinkuotu, Vincent Ibonye
Kritika Kultura
The paper, in general terms, clarifies and discusses the link between the Diaspora and the issue of development in general, and, in specific terms examines the role as well as the huge potential of the Nigerian Diaspora in national development. Drawing lessons from the historical as well as contemporary experiences of some countries such as India, China, Philippines, Italy, and Ghana, the paper argues that the Diaspora can be an agent of national development. In analyzing the different Diasporas and remittances from Diasporas from the different countries, the paper took cognizance of the fact that they are not similar to …
Health Literacy And Advocation Amongst Community Health Workers, Dustin R. King
Health Literacy And Advocation Amongst Community Health Workers, Dustin R. King
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Health literacy is an important component of global health maintenance and can be greatly influenced by the DNP. The trigger for the EBP was related to a limited amount of appropriate application of health literacy in South Asian communities and village medical leaders. Health literacy was assessed by distributing short questionnaires to medical professionals such as chemists, doctors, and community health workers. An educational intervention with one specific disease process, hypertension, was then delivered to those who accepted. Upon completion of the teaching, a re-assessment with the same questions was either distributed or reviewed with the participants. Descriptive statistics were …

Exploring The Contribution Of Mobile Money To The Well-Being Of Rural Tanzanian Villagers And Assessing Their Readiness To Adopt A Similar Model To Advance Their Healthcare Access An Exploratory Study, Sr. Magdalena P. Chubwa
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Background: Healthcare for rural villages in Tanzania has always been rudimentary. Lack of the infrastructure and poverty are among the many obstacles facing this population’s access to healthcare. While, the rise of telehealth has improved access to healthcare in many parts of the world, its use in rural Tanzania has been extremely limited to poor internet access. However, given the availability of non-internet connected mobile phones in rural Tanzania, the potential to use this devise to improve healthcare access exists. Individuals using mobile phones for financial transactions may be motivated to access healthcare via telehealth by using their non-internet connected …

Servant Leadership And Research: Using Both To Build Sustainable Service Projects, Linda S. Johanson
Servant Leadership And Research: Using Both To Build Sustainable Service Projects, Linda S. Johanson
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Monday, September 19, 2016:
Nursing is a caring profession, and because of this, nurses are often drawn to volunteer for situations such as medical mission work or disaster outreach, where the skills of a health care professional are needed and appreciated. However, one of the criticisms of short-term medical service projects in developing countries is that they lack sustainability. A team enters a culture for a brief period of time, and when they leave there are no lasting changes to the host community. The content in this presentation relates to the conference theme of leadership success, specifically …
Development And Implementation Of A National Service Learning Mission Trip, Catherine S. Thomas
Development And Implementation Of A National Service Learning Mission Trip, Catherine S. Thomas
Leadership Connection
Session presented on Monday, September 19, 2016:
Nursing education has embraced the value of service learning, and numerous programs have integrated this pedagogy into their curriculum with a variety of approaches, ranging from offering international experiences to integration in clinical courses. This innovative educational pedagogy allows students and faculty to engage in activities that address a variety of needs, incorporate self-reflection, and embrace the concept of reciprocity between students and the community receiving care (Schofield et al, 2013). Service learning activities must intentionally complement program outcome goals and/or course objectives, provide students contextual experiences for understanding abstract health/illness and nursing …

Holistic Review In Health Professions Education Program Admissions: A Concept Analysis, Andrea N. Bowens
Holistic Review In Health Professions Education Program Admissions: A Concept Analysis, Andrea N. Bowens
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Health professions education programs often use holistic reviews to promote a more diverse student body, leading to a more diverse healthcare workforce. Although many organizations and educational institutions advocate for holistic reviews of applicants, there are inconsistencies in the literature as to what this practice entails. Thus, the purpose of this concept analysis was to identify the defining attributes of holistic reviews and provide an operational definition. Methods: Walker and Avant’s description of a concept analysis served as a guide for this review. This systematic process included an analysis of current literature, legal proceedings, and organizational documents; identification of …

Making Reflection Assignments Meaningful And Enjoyable For Health Professions Students And Faculty, Karen A. Gibbs, Megan L. Trad, Shannon R. Herrin
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Recognizing the professional and personal benefits of self-reflection, health professions programs routinely incorporate reflection activities into their curricula. However, designing, administering, and grading engaging, meaningful reflection activities that can be utilized for in-person or online teaching can be challenging for faculty and less than enjoyable for students. This study explored student perceptions of a shared activity using photovoice to stimulate individual and group reflection and discussion of learning during clinical experiences. Methods: Second year, doctor of physical therapy students were asked to reflect on their clinical experiences. During the semester-long assignment, each student completed a photovoice slide …
Healing Or Harming? Evaluating Perspectives And Impact Of Short-Term Medical Camps In Nepali Communities, Claire Rhyneer
Healing Or Harming? Evaluating Perspectives And Impact Of Short-Term Medical Camps In Nepali Communities, Claire Rhyneer
Nepal: Tibetan and Himalayan Peoples
Medical volunteering, or “voluntourism, ” via short-term health camps is an increasingly popular way for doctors and paramedical staff to see a new region while still offering services to nearby under-serviced communities. In particular, these health camps are often propagated by the global north in largely low- and middle-income countries of the global south. Skeptics in literature point out that medical volunteers often lack cultural competence or knowledge of local health options in the community. Furthermore, ephemeral care is often too short to address chronic issues and prevents meaningful development of sustainable local healthcare. However, this literature often lacks the …

Millennial Evangelism: Mobilizing Millennials Towards Faith-Sharing At Hope Chapel Foursquare Church, Peter O. Kolawole
Millennial Evangelism: Mobilizing Millennials Towards Faith-Sharing At Hope Chapel Foursquare Church, Peter O. Kolawole
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This action research project addresses the problem of dispassion or apparent detachment from the ministry of evangelism among millennials at Hope Chapel Foursquare church in Raleigh, North Carolina. Evangelism is the cornerstone of the Foursquare Church, of which Hope Chapel is a branch. As members of Hope Chapel come for bi-monthly community faith-sharing events, the largest group in the church, the millennial, was noticeably waning, which, if not rectified, will prevent the church from achieving its missional mandate. Evangelism is the nucleus and gateway to spiritual formation is essential to the Great Commission. Attaining spiritual formation and discipleship leads to …

Measuring Technical Super-Efficiency Of Christian Faith-Based International Humanitarian Organizations, Barbara G. Price
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
COVID-19 left a wake of destruction upon its descension, pervasion, and diffusion across the continents. Not only did this happen at individual, household, and corporate levels, but also the nonprofit world. Christian ministries, faith-based organizations, and faith-based charities are among some of the largest international relief and development agencies that are on the front lines of humanitarian and disaster relief efforts (MinistryWatch & Smith, 2023). Understanding the effects of COVID-19 or phenomena with similar magnitudes on faith-based organizations is critical to understanding the impact at the level of their international humanitarian development and relief programs. There is a need for …
Words Become Action: Linking Mission Statements To Student Development, Catherine Morrell
Words Become Action: Linking Mission Statements To Student Development, Catherine Morrell
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
Mission statements are often seen to be powerful declarations. However, they are also frequently viewed as disconnected from reality, thereby having little influence on organizational performance. When thoughtfully prepared and actively adhered to, mission statements can have far-reaching effects. This article analyzes how the Mission Statement developed by the College of Health Sciences at Marquette University has enriched students' educational opportunities. This approach permeates the entire college as it influences not only students but faculty and staff as well. The implications suggest that when a college incorporates mission statements and links student development to its own stated goals, the students …

Service learning connects theoretical knowledge to community settings. Reflective journals were used to document student service-learning experiences in a Community Nutrition course component. Reflective journal data obtained from students (n=137) during different semesters were analyzed qualitatively. The service-learning partners included Nutrition Education, Food Provision, and Local Food sites. Positive impacts were noted on personal, social, and academic development of students for all sites. Service-learning assignments can impart transferrable skills and enhance student development.
