This article discusses the kampilan sword in Jambi People’s Struggle Museum. Kampilan is a traditional weapon originating from the Philippines but has spread to several regions in Indonesia, including Jambi. The kampilan sword collection is often overlooked, and there is not much information regarding these objects, despite the museum’s primary function is research and communication. Therefore, we conducted a study of a collection of kampilan swords to explore information related to these objects, allowing the museum to utilize and develop them in the future. This paper specifically focuses on the repercussions of war and political violence on Iraq's ecology, which has been greatly impacted by conflict. Two noteworthy plays, Ishtar in Baghdad by Iraqi writer Rasha Fadhlil and In the Reeds by American writer Amy Merrill, shed light on this topic. This article presents ways to teach media literacy (ML) skills in Russian language classrooms with particular focus on developing proficiencies to navigate social media (SM) where information disorder is a critical concern. Because of its numerous configurations and applications, SM is understood broadly as “the creation and exchange of user-generated content.” After outlining critical concerns surrounding SM use, the discussion focuses on three conditions that affect the development of ML skills when trying to engage meaningfully online: cognitive vulnerabilities, unreliable narrators, and populist rhetoric. There are few more explicit documents of the interconnection of hymnody, mobility, and coloniality than the 1939 film Stanley and Livingstone. Directed by the American duo of Henry King and Otto Brower, much of the picture was filmed “on location” in the British-controlled territories of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanganyika (now part of Tanzania). The film tells the real-life story of a New York journalist (Stanley) searching for a Scottish missionary (Livingstone) and eventually finding him in a town on the north-eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. In the decades leading up to and during the first years of the Wars of Religion, Huguenots and Catholics waged audible battles over sonic territories using songs as spiritual weapons. Huguenots memorized and communally sang metrical psalms in the vernacular as sonic markers of the Reformed faith. Catholics interpreted these same sounds as pollution in need of eradication. In the Chaozhou City Gazetteer of Buddhism & Chaozhou Kaiyuan Monastery Gazetteer published in 1992, the then Abbot of the Kaiyuan Monastery, Shi Huiyuan 释慧原 heavily condemned the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911) monk Shi Kesheng 释可声 (date unknown) for "starting the sins among laities in the Chaozhou region who dared transgressing (the Buddhist doctrines) and became chant leaders in a flaming mouth ceremony.” Why was the Abbot so upset with a fellow monk back in history? This article addresses complex law of armed conflict (LOAC) issues posed by a scenario with eight “situations” examined during a tabletop workshop conducted by the U.S. Naval War College’s Stockton Center for International Law. Participants included judge advocates from the United States and uniformed legal advisors from Israel, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, all of whom had extensive experience providing legal advice on targeting. Also included were academics with particular expertise in the law of armed conflict. The situations were drafted to reflect situations some of the participants had faced in international or non-international armed conflict.

In a critical engagement with Marc Crépon's Murderous Consent, this essay revisits Albert Camus's writings on Algeria, from 1939 to the throes of the war of independence. Against the argument that Camus's work can provide a moral and philosophical compass for a critique of violence, it explores the effects that Camus's complex identification with France and its project of settler-colonialism in North Africa has on his understanding of the resistance, and eventually the war, of natives against the pieds-noir and the power of the colonial metropole. This thesis diverges from conventional narratives that predominantly focus on the challenges faced by women and children in Nigeria, particularly in the aftermath of colonial rule. How did France’s refusal to take part in the war on Iraq in 2003 has created the conditions that legitimizes its future military interventions abroad? In this paper, a discourse analysis of the official French Foreign Policy Discourse is done to show why saying no to war in 2003 paradoxically allows France to carry out military interventions in 2015. The British Rifle Volunteer movement came about as a response to the perceived threat of invasion by France in 1859. One of the primary responsibilities of the Volunteers was to function as an auxiliary force for the defense of Britain. However, no invasion would come, and the Volunteers would see no combat outside a small deployment during the Second Boer War. The Volunteer Force eventually became a new organization named the Territorial Force in 1908 during the sweeping series of British Army reforms after 1900. Pirates during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries experienced the height of Atlantic piracy. The Golden Age of Piracy caused major political problems for the British overseas colonies and constituted revisions in colonial governance. Piracy during this period began as buccaneers who worked for the state during wartime as privateers and rogues during peacetime. This group changed however, by the end of the seventeenth century had transitioned into pirates, attacking any and all shipping around the colonies regarless of origin. Bacterial pathogens threaten crop production worldwide, which highlights the need to understand plant and pathogen interactions. Studies on plant-pathogen interactions typically focus on a single host and pathogen. However, bacteria exist in complex microbial communities, not alone. There are few studies that examine the mechanisms behind multi-pathogen infections which renders a gap in our understanding of the subsequent implications on agriculture. Shock-Wave Tolerant Phase Reconstruction Algorithm For Shack–Hartmann Wavefront Sensor Data, Thomas E. Defoor, Matthew Kalensky, Matthew R. Kemnetz, Timothy J. Bukowski, Mark F. Spencer

We develop a phase reconstruction algorithm for the Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor (SHWFS) that is tolerant to phase discontinuities, such as the ones imposed by shock waves. In practice, this algorithm identifies SHWFS locations where the resultant tilt information is affected by the shock and improves the tilt information in these locations using the local SHWFS observation-plane irradiance patterns. The algorithm was shown to work well over the range of conditions tested with both simulated and experimental data. In turn, the reconstruction algorithm will enable robust wavefront sensing in transonic, supersonic, and hypersonic environments.
