Jurnal Pendidikan Vokasi
As social beings, humans create dynamically changing situations and conditions. These conditions often require humans to adapt, but some people cannot cope with the demands of the times. To deal with People with Mental Disorders (ODGJ), the Sukabumi City government has developed the Sistem Inovasi Cepat Penanganan ODGJ Terpadu (SICEPOT). SICEPOT is an innovative health service system to minimize the growth in the number of mental disorders experienced by the people of Sukabumi City, especially in the Citamiang Sub-district area, West Java, Indonesia. Over the past three years, there has been an increase in ODGJ patients from 2019 to 2021, …

Journal of Appalachian Health
Introduction: Success of opioid overdose interventions involving first responders is dependent on the comfort level that bystanders have with first responders and their willingness to call for assistance. Positive or negative experiences with first responders following witnessing an overdose may influence a person’s willingness to call a first responder for assistance in the future.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to examine changes in bystanders’ perceptions of first responders following witnessing an overdose attended by emergency medical services or a law enforcement official. It specifically explored perception changes among a sample of individuals residing in Appalachia who use prescription …

Shaping A Crisis, Constructing Addiction: Discursive Depoliticization Of British Columbia’S Drug Policy, Hope Robinson
Shaping A Crisis, Constructing Addiction: Discursive Depoliticization Of British Columbia’S Drug Policy, Hope Robinson
Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Social Analysis
This analysis sets out to inquire why the comprehensive public health response to the alarming surge in illicit opioid and stimulant-related fatalities in the Canadian province of British Columbia has not yielded the intended results, despite its forward-thinking policies grounded in a concern for health over criminalization (Govt of BC, 2016; Burton et al., 2021). I will claim that this purportedly progressive approach to public health has been ineffective because it fails to address the socio-political drivers of the overdose crisis. Relating the work of cultural anthropologist Philippe Bourgois on drug use as a coping mechanism and Carol Bacchi’s ontopolitical …

Protected areas comprise of some of the most precious and sensitive habitats on the planet. However, many of these areas are also used as major tourism and leisure destinations. Managed well, these areas can safeguard biodiversity conservation with multiple positive benefits to local populations and economies. Yet, where not carefully planned and managed, there has long been recognition of the possibility of negative impacts on natural environments and social consequences for local communities. This chapter considers such impacts experienced in Dorset, UK, post the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. It reviews how effective some of the most commonly used tools …

Health Insurance Determinants Of The Working-Class, Lall Ramroo
Student Theses
Abstract:
This research delves into healthcare coverage disparities within the working class, spotlighting challenges in accessing essential services. Leveraging data from the 2021 American Community Survey, we scrutinize coverage intricacies for those above Medicaid eligibility yet unable to afford private insurance. Findings unveil a worrisome trend: the working class faces limited healthcare access due to income thresholds, placing them in precarious situations. Those earning too much for Medicaid but lacking private insurance means or employer-sponsored coverage grapple with significant obstacles. This paper underscores the need for targeted policies to bridge healthcare gaps for the working class, advocating for equitable access …

The “Mother's Heart”: Social Networks And Smallpox Inoculation In The 18th Century, Jennalyn Welsh Mackay
History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
In 1721 the practice of inoculation was put on trial in the American colonies. This incredible medical advancement, practiced for centuries in different parts of the world, had an irregular but unforgettable impact on the eastern seaboard of the North American continent. Inoculation provided individuals and families with an opportunity to control this terrible scourge, however, few were keen to initially take on the risk. The history of inoculation throughout the world and especially in Europe has been well studied. Even as the debate raged, physicians wrote their own histories on the subject. Less studied is the impact that women’s …

This Note will describe the new features of SB 2’s decertification provisions in contrast to traditional methods of addressing police misconduct. Additionally, this Note will examine where the bill fell short, and how to overcome its shortcomings.

Must Courts Recalibrate Tort Law Governing Firearms In Light Of The Second Amendment?, Lars Noah
Must Courts Recalibrate Tort Law Governing Firearms In Light Of The Second Amendment?, Lars Noah
University of Cincinnati Law Review
The rules governing the scope of liability in cases where firearms cause injuries—some well-established, others fairly novel—help to define the responsibilities of users, owners, and sellers of these popular but dangerous products. As the U.S. Supreme Court has recently expanded an individual’s right to keep and bear arms, some have wondered whether the Second Amendment might operate to limit the reach of these various tort doctrines. Sixty years ago, the Court started to constitutionalize various aspects of state common law, most famously using the First Amendment to limit defamation claims but in other respects as well. A comparable approach to …
Section 230 As Civil Rights Statute, Enrique Armijo
Section 230 As Civil Rights Statute, Enrique Armijo
University of Cincinnati Law Review
Many of our most pressing discussions about justice, progress, and civil rights have moved online. Activists advocating for social change no longer need to be in the same physical space to connect with others who share their challenges and aspirations. But the convergence of mobility, connectivity, and technology is not the only reason why. Thanks to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act’s (“Section 230”) immunity for online platforms, websites, and their hosts, speakers can engage in speech about protest, equality, and dissent without fear of collateral censorship from governments, authorities, and others in power who hope to silence them. …

Constitutional Right To A Fair Trial And Social Justice Influence, Kaitlyn Marchant
Pace Law Review
This article evaluates the challenges that have arisen from the growth of social media and its influence on the right to the fair trial process in high-profile cases. Pretrial publicity through media exposure can bias potential jurors, potentially leading to decisions based on outside information rather than courtroom evidence. The article highlights the risks associated with jurors being exposed to external information through various media sources, which can significantly impact their objectivity and ability to make impartial judgments. It scrutinizes the limitations of the existing legal framework in addressing these challenges, including the reliance on jurors’ assurances of impartiality and …

Do Judges Understand Technology? How Attorneys And Advocates View Judicial Responsibility In Cyberstalking And Cyberharassment Cases, Kateryna Kaplun
International Journal on Responsibility
As new technologies emerge and are increasingly used to commit interpersonal cybercrimes like cyberstalking and cyberharassment, the legal system lags in assisting victims in obtaining justice in these types of experiences. This qualitative research study explores how attorney and advocate interviewees from Illinois, New Jersey, and New York view judges’ responsibility to the law in cyberstalking and cyberharassment cases. This study finds three themes: judges’ lack of understanding of technology and its harms, discretion, and law on the books versus law in action as important factors and frameworks that contribute to why judges do not consider the importance of technology …

The History Of Systemic Racism In The Texas Rangers, John E. Jordan Jr.
The History Of Systemic Racism In The Texas Rangers, John E. Jordan Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
White people dominated North American society from the first settlement of North America through the twentieth century and their own cultural norms dictated their actions, both good and bad. The Texas Rangers and other police officers in Texas played a major role in the discrimination of people of color, particularly the Hispanic population. Systemic racism is found in the militarizing of the police and how they interacted with people of color.

Mass Incarceration In America: Where's The Church?, Michael J. Wing
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Due to mass incarceration, correctional facilities in America are dealing with unprecedented levels of overcrowding, staff shortages, violence, suicide, and widespread mental illness among inmates. Budget cuts and the corresponding loss of vocational, educational, and treatment programs have exacerbated such problems. Mass incarceration and its deleterious consequences are challenging the very soul of America, and the church has largely stood by and watched this tragic situation unfold over the last fifty years. This research project has explored some of the barriers that have precluded churches from taking a more intentional, active, and impactful role in doing something about the national …

The Cost Of Creating Therapeutic Relationships: A Phenomenological Study, Robert D. January
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe how licensed counselors address vicarious trauma and burnout when working with individuals exposed to trauma. This study involved ten licensed professionals from diverse settings including clinics, private practices, and non-profit organizations. Constructive Self-Development Theory guided this study, which defines how traumatic experiences influence a person’s sense of identity. This theory is particularly relevant to this qualitative study because it explains the challenges faced by professional counselors who interact with trauma survivors and acts as a guide toward solutions for preventing counselors from experiencing vicarious trauma and burnout. Snowball sampling was used …

Understanding Lived Experiences Of Correctional Officers' Reintegration Back Into The Work Environment Post-Assault, Claudette Duggins
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The researcher explored the experiences of correctional officers assaulted by inmates, focusing on the impact of such assaults on their reintegration into the work environment. The researcher sought to understand how these experiences affect officers' attitudes, behaviors, and decision-making, which could impact the safety and security of the institution and the public. A qualitative approach using a phenomenological research design was employed to understand the lived experiences of assaulted correctional officers. Data emerged through participant interactions, capturing their personal experiences and perspectives. The qualitative method was chosen over a quantitative approach as it allowed for an in-depth understanding of the …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This qualitative method research paper with survey design identifies the need to implement an associate in fine arts degree in music at community colleges located in the rural northwestern and northern regions of North Carolina. A music degree would provide early college students with music courses comparable to those offered in traditional area high schools and greater accessibility for a diverse student population of community college students. At the inception of this study, early college high school programs in rural northwestern and northern regions of North Carolina did not offer music courses. Students in these programs relied on the community …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to determine if servant-leader characteristics were common among recruits enrolled in basic law enforcement training programs in North Carolina Community Colleges and the relationship between recruit commitment to preserving public safety and public order and the call or natural feeling to serve others. This study explored whether law enforcement recruits inherently possessed servant-leader characteristics defined by Greenleaf and Spears (1998, 2002) and described in Matthew and Mark. One hundred eleven law enforcement recruits, both men and women, from various demographic backgrounds actively enrolled in 22 North Carolina Community College System’s Basic Law …

A Qualitative Study Of Media Dependency Theory On Tiktok Citizen Journalists, Jaron David Paschke
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the problem with depending on citizen journalism for news updates on TikTok during Hurricane Ian. To accomplish that, three types of qualitative content analysis were deployed to answer three separate but related research questions. First, a conventional content analysis was used to determine if the communicative roles of citizen journalists differed from their mainstream media counterparts during a crisis. Second, a summative content analysis was used to determine how effective crisis communications from citizen journalists were when compared to those produced by the mainstream media. Lastly, a directed content analysis was used …
