Christological Application Of The Mosaic Law: A Hermeneutical And Exegetical Exploration, Nabeel Saqib
Christological Application Of The Mosaic Law: A Hermeneutical And Exegetical Exploration, Nabeel Saqib
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study is a hermeneutical and exegetical exploration of the Christological application of the Mosaic Law for Christians. It involves a clear understanding of the relationship between the continuity and discontinuity from the Old Testament to the New Testament, the relationship between Israel and the Church as people of God, and the relationship between the Old and the New Covenant. It also requires a clear understanding of the meaning and purpose of the law for the initial audience, and its current significance for Christians today. Romans 10:4 presents Christ as the culmination of the law as it sees him as …
Cohen, Ruthie, Sophia Maier Garcia
Cohen, Ruthie, Sophia Maier Garcia
Bronx Jewish History Project
Ruthie Cohen is a second generation American, with her paternal grandparents immigrating from Poland. When she was born, her family lived at 2805 Sedgwick Avenue, but moved nearby to another two-family home at 2805 Webb Avenue. She remembers how her immediate neighborhood and school was predominantly Jewish, but Italians and Irish also lived nearby and attended parochial schools. Cohen felt very little antisemitism from them. She was the youngest of four children in a relatively observant family.
Cohen’s father was a teacher who was very involved in the larger community, and education and tolerance were important values in her family. …
Publishing The Pan-Jewish: The First Hebrew Newspaper And Its Modernities, Philip E. Keisman
Publishing The Pan-Jewish: The First Hebrew Newspaper And Its Modernities, Philip E. Keisman
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Publishing the Pan-Jewish emerges from a question about sites of synthesis between claims of sacred continuity and novel forms of communication. It centers on the first ten years of Hamagid (1856-1866), acknowledged within the historiography as history’s first Hebrew-language newspaper. Eliezer Lipman Silberman, an Orthodox butcher founded Hamagid in East Prussia as a bulwark of his vision of traditional Judaism. The first chapter of this dissertation examines the formal elements of the newspaper as a medium, demonstrating the myriad ways in which it presented novel experiences for its reading public. Chapter two narrates an untold history of the newspaper’s early …

Inverted Quotations In The Book Of Mormon, David Bokovoy
Inverted Quotations In The Book Of Mormon, David Bokovoy
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
When the Book of Mormon appeared in 1830, the Western world had only a limited knowledge of the impressive literary and editorial techniques utilized by ancient Semitic authors. Even today, many students of the Bible remain unaware of exciting discoveries by Israeli scholars whose work has appeared only in Hebrew.
Worship Leadership From The Beginning: A Comparative Study Of Exodus 15:1-21 And Judges 5, Vivian Ann Petties
Worship Leadership From The Beginning: A Comparative Study Of Exodus 15:1-21 And Judges 5, Vivian Ann Petties
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Although many excellent books, commentaries, and journal articles have been written on worship leadership, no framework for worship leadership has been developed based upon Exodus 15:1-21 or Judges 5. The purpose of previous research has not been to discover principles of leadership, praise, and worship, or composition of music for use in ministry nor to develop a consensus about the roles played by the males and females in these texts. To develop a proposal for filling this lacuna, the present thesis will study Exodus 15:1-21 and (comparatively) Judges 5. This qualitative study will employ the exegetical methods of socio-rhetorical analysis …
Misusing Books: Material Texts And Lived Religion In The Roman Mediterranean, Jeremiah Coogan
Misusing Books: Material Texts And Lived Religion In The Roman Mediterranean, Jeremiah Coogan
Jesuit School of Theology
Books are more than vehicles for textual content. They are objects of economic value and social significance, embedded in complex networks of production and use. Recent historical scholarship on lived religion in the Roman Mediterranean has expanded beyond traditional conversations about theological concepts and scriptural interpretations, but this critical turn sometimes neglects material texts as sacred and powerful objects. Addressing this lacuna in light of Roman book culture, the present article re-reads several ancient reports about the misuse of textual objects. Accounts of the burned books of Numa Pompilius, of the powerful codex of Elchasai, and of the writings destroyed …

Yelloz, Eva, Sophia Maier Garcia
Bronx Jewish History Project
Eva Yelloz was born in a displaced persons camp in Germany and came to the Bronx in 1949 with her parents. They lived in the Melrose neighborhood in the Bronx, on Avenue St. John. Her mother was 19 when World War Two began, working as an apprentice in a non-Jewish home, and she heard her family was in the Warsaw ghetto. Her father had been killed and the family was sent to Treblinka, but she jumped off the train, escaping and being nursed back to life by a non-Jewish family before becoming a partisan for the remainder of the war. …

After 500 years since the arrival of Christianity in these islands now called the Philippines, we are still being summoned to inculturate our faith. This dialogue between faith and culture takes place more effectively if done in our local language—Tagalog. This challenge is posed concretely to the Catholic Biblical Association of the Philippines in the form of a translation project, with enough Filipino and Filipina biblicists, of the entire Sacred Scriptures, which shall serve theological studies and reflection rooted in the context of our people and society. The belated and posthumous appreciation of Mitchell Dahood, SJ’s magnum opus (Psalms I-III …
Did Jewish Women Circumcise Male Infants In Antiquity? A Reassessment Of The Evidence, Thomas R. Blanton Iv
Did Jewish Women Circumcise Male Infants In Antiquity? A Reassessment Of The Evidence, Thomas R. Blanton Iv
2023 Faculty Bibliography
Two diametrically opposed assumptions have influenced interpretations of circumcision rituals in ancient Judaism: either women performed the operation on their infant sons because children at birth and during infancy remained under the purview of the mother; or, conversely, men—specifically a ritual agent known as the mohel—performed circumcisions, because only they were typically granted authority to carry out the ritual. This study reassesses the pertinent texts, including Exodus 4 and passages from the books of Maccabees and the Babylonian Talmud (b. Šabb. 134a; b. Yebam. 64b; b. ʿAbod. Zar. 27a), to determine whether women in ancient Judaism may have circumcised their …
Theosis In The Book Of Mormon: The Work And Glory Of The Father, Mother And Son, And Holy Ghost, Val Larsen, Newell D. Wright
Theosis In The Book Of Mormon: The Work And Glory Of The Father, Mother And Son, And Holy Ghost, Val Larsen, Newell D. Wright
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
While some scholars have suggested that the doctrine of theosis — the transformation of human beings into divine beings — emerged only in Nauvoo, the essence of the doctrine was already present in the Book of Mormon, both in precept and example. The doctrine is especially well developed in 1 Nephi, Alma 19, and Helaman 5. The focus in 1 Nephi is on Lehi and Nephi’s rejection of Deuteronomist reforms that erased the divine Mother and Son, who, that book shows, are closely coupled as they, the Father, and Holy Ghost work to transform human beings into divine beings. The …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
March 2020 introduced the world to a crisis unlike any seen in modern times. This crisis was the COVID-19 pandemic with its increased morbidity and high rates of death. It disrupted all aspects of society including global economies and health care systems. COVID-19 directly impacted schools, governments, commerce, and churches. This study addressed the need for research-based best practices that would provide the most successful outcomes for pastors during times of crisis such as the COVID-19 pandemic. To identify these practices, the researcher used a qualitative research approach which incorporated a multi-case study and an online survey. To build the …
