A computing device (e.g., a smartphone, a smartwatch, smartglasses, smart headphones (including earbuds), a laptop computer, a tablet computer, a vehicle head unit, etc.) may execute an application programming interface (API) that outputs pairing information per a universal or general standard. For example, the API may process communication parameters uniquely specified by an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to identify key attributes and features. The API may insert the identified key attributes and features into a custom specification having a common format. In this way, the API may generalize, abstract, or otherwise standardize communication parameters specifications that were originally uniquely defined. …

Beyond The Corporate Responsibility To Respect Human Rights In The Dawn Of A Metaverse, Kuzi Charamba

University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review

Technological advances in the 21st century pose new threats to human rights from business activities. In this new technological age, individuals and communities engage through an increasing myriad of digital means and platforms, all facilitated by a smaller, more powerful set of global BigTech companies, such as Microsoft, Apple, Google, and Meta (formerly known as Facebook). In so doing, however, our lives as workers, consumers, and citizens become subject to increasing corporate control through surveillance capitalism and algorithmic governance. With the dawn of metaverses—3D immersive digital environments in which you can interact with others via avatars and through virtual and …

Customer complaints in cloud computing can originate from components of the cloud infrastructure platform or from components of third-party software. Further, cloud infrastructure components causing issues can affect customers generally or only customers under certain computing environments or using certain third-party software. Pinpointing the origin of a given customer complaint using targeted testing of components in isolation is computationally infeasible. This disclosure describes techniques that correlate test signals across multiple sources to reliably categorize issues in cloud computing to identify the origin of bad rollouts in a timely and cost-efficient manner. An issue that affects a plurality of workloads can …

The Fall Of The Pakatan Harapan (Ph): Contesting Nationalism In Malaysia, Cheng Kidd Sun Dec 2022

The Fall Of The Pakatan Harapan (Ph): Contesting Nationalism In Malaysia, Cheng Kidd Sun

Honors Theses

The collapse of the 22 months-old Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition-government in 2020 was the ultimate manifestation of contestations over nationalism that have continued in Malaysia since the nation’s inception more than six decades ago. The “middle ground” platform — a political moderation strategy to win across ethnic lines to obtain multiethnic support — that helped the PH coalition to win the 14th Malaysian General Election was shattered due to identity tensions. The current political discourse has persistently insisted that the betrayal of politicians and political parties, along with economic insecurity and media fragmentation, had contributed to the downfall of this …

Establishment And Mapping Of Heterogeneous Anomalies In Network Intrusion Datasets, Liam Riddell, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Paul Haskell-Dowland Dec 2022

Establishment And Mapping Of Heterogeneous Anomalies In Network Intrusion Datasets, Liam Riddell, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Paul Haskell-Dowland

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Anomaly detection in the scope of network security aims to identify network instances for the unexpected and unique, with various security operations employing such techniques to facilitate effective threat detection. However, many systems have been designed based on the absolute mapping of attacks to one of three anomaly types (i.e. point, collective, or contextual), a strategy not supported by the recent findings of hybrid anomaly classifications. Given the growing usage of network anomaly detection and the implications of hybrid anomalies, we propose several heterogeneous anomaly types and provide an unsupervised approach for the automated mapping of network threats. Initial findings …

International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice

We all are consumers by birth and remain consumers till death, and at the same time, it is also true that a consumer becomes the victim of exploitation in different ways. Adulterations, underweight, duplicate or cloned goods, and misleading and insufficient information are some ways of victimizing consumers. Today, we are standing at a juncture where we have a series of legislative, judicial, and administrative efforts to protect consumers. On the other hand, we have a plethora of incidents of exploitation of consumers. The nature of the legislation available for the protection of consumers is not purely criminal but sometimes …

Abortion Pill Reversal And The Inappropriate Censorship Of Google Advertisements, Chloe S. Edwards Dec 2022

Abortion Pill Reversal And The Inappropriate Censorship Of Google Advertisements, Chloe S. Edwards

Pepperdine Policy Review

Abortion has been a contentious policy issue for nearly as long as United States has existed. From its legalization under the U.S. Constitution’s right to privacy in the Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade to the overturn of the decision this year in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Healthcare Organization, abortion policy has been on a back and forth swing for generations. The addition of medically advanced forms of abortion, including medical abortions administered via pills, has added another dimension to this already complicated matter. Recent censorship of abortion pill reversal ads by the internet site Google has shown the …

Theses and Dissertations

The increased quality and quantity of sensors provide an ever-increasing capability to collect large quantities of high-quality data in the field. Research devoted to translating that data is progressing rapidly; however, translating field data into usable information can require high performance computing capabilities. While high performance computing (HPC) resources are available in centralized facilities, bandwidth, latency, security and other limitations inherent to edge location in field sensor applications may prevent HPC resources from being used in a timely fashion necessary for potential United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) field applications. To address these limitations, the design requirements for RECON …

Third party ATM Companies that do not belong to any central banks often run into issues with scaling as they buy terminals from multiple different companies which they then need to manage themselves. Whether through manual calculations and understanding of a location’s traffic and clientele, to providing an optimized route to ensure they save as much time and money on gas expenses and overtime. There is also a need to verify that the correct amount of money was loaded into the ATMs, if an employee has already visited that terminal, and a way for an employee to understand ATM error …

Impact Of The Russo-Ukraine War African Students And Families: Community-Based Approach To Humanitarian Mutual Aid, Macire Aribot, Nassim Ashford

Young African Leaders Journal of Development

Africans and African-descent refugees from Ukraine have faced racism and discrimination since the onset of the Russian-Ukraine war. When seeking refuge in neighboring countries, African people experienced differences in treatment when crossing the borders of European countries. Historically, European countries have enforced strict anti-immigration policies to deter Black and Brown people of color from migrating to their countries. This paper explores racism and discrimination experienced by African and African-descent refugees fleeing Ukraine and the inequity in the global humanitarian response for Africans and other people of color affected by the Russia-Ukraine war. As a result, this paper will highlight community-based, …

Improving Adjacency List Storage Methods For Polypeptide Similarity Analysis, Arianna Swensen

Honors Theses

Protein design is a complex biomolecular and computational problem. Working on increasingly large protein folding problems requires an improvement in current analysis methods available. This work first discusses various methods of protein design, including de novo protein design, which is the primary focus of this thesis. Then, a new approach utilizing a B+ tree to effectively store and query a graph of keys and vertices is proposed in order to store the number of times two polypeptides are considered to be similar. This approach is found to have a reduction in time complexity from current mapping methods and thus provides …

Sport Isn’T Sacred And Analytics Isn’T New: Challenging Common Notions About Sports Analytics, Grant Morgan, Marshall Magnusen

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The authors add to the debate about whether sport and numbers can cohabitate in modern day athletics, three areas are explored (albeit briefly) in the present paper. The first area focuses on the newness (or lack thereof) of analytics. The second area focuses the objectivity of analytics. The third area focuses on the idea that athletic competition is somehow sacred and should not be soiled by applying various statistical methods to practical sport performance problems.
