Evidence-Based Geology As A Basis For Improving The Efficiency Of Innovative Design Of The Development Of Tengizchevroil Oil Fields, Nursaule Tauova

Jurnal Pendidikan Vokasi

The article's main purpose is to study the method of storing sulfur in solid form in a large block at Tengizshevroil deposits and dispose of sulfur residues. Thus, we have to admit that, in this case, the evaluation of the effectiveness of the innovation at the stage of its development was performed incorrectly, and thus the consumer was misled. As a rule, the production activities of enterprises are planned according to the average parameters that are not known reliably in advance and can change randomly. At the same time, a situation with sharp changes in these indicators is extremely undesirable …

Coal Geology & Exploration

The deep buried Inner Mongolia-Shaanxi mining area was newly developed, where the hydrogeological characteristics under the disturbance of coal mining were still unclear. Various types of water damage problems had occurred in the process of infrastructure construction and production. Among them, no research was conducted for the variation characteristics of water inflow during and after mining in working face, which increased the difficulty in the arrangement of underground water drainage system and the work of water prevention and control. In order to find out the evolution law of water inflow in the full life cycle of working face before and …

Machine Learning-Based Methods For The Segmentation Of Scanning Electron Microscopy Images Of Fine-Grained Shale Samples, Binqian Yin Dec 2022

Machine Learning-Based Methods For The Segmentation Of Scanning Electron Microscopy Images Of Fine-Grained Shale Samples, Binqian Yin

Earth & Environmental Sciences Dissertations - Archive

The segmentation of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images is critical yet time-consuming for geological studies, as it will need to differentiate the boundaries for different mineral objects to facilitate subsequent analyses, such as porosity calculation. Recently, machine learning methods, especially convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have been explored to segment SEM images for fine-grained shale samples. However, existing methods fail to address two critical issues in the segmentation of shale rock images---insufficient labeled data and imbalanced objects. To this end, this dissertation has proposed a machine learning pipeline that consists of supervised, semi-supervised, and active learning stages to reduce manual efforts …

Since 1999, Primary services have increased significantly, when the Indigenous Health System (SASI) was created. CHWs were incorporated as part of the health teams serving the indigenous lands. Munduruku CHWs have not only assumed an important role in the delivery of biomedical services, but also are key in the articulation between different traditions of care. Although there …

Paleoenvironmental Context Of Early Stone Age Archaeology: An Analysis Of The Gona Fauna Between ~3 And 1 Ma., Amanda Christie Leiss Oct 2022

Paleoenvironmental Context Of Early Stone Age Archaeology: An Analysis Of The Gona Fauna Between ~3 And 1 Ma., Amanda Christie Leiss

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

The advent of tool-making has long been associated with expanding grasslands in Africa. My dissertation reconstructs paleoenvironments at Gona, in the Afar region of Ethiopia, between ~3–1 Ma (1) to make inferences about how hominins were utilizing the paleo-landscape and interacting with mammalian communities and (2) to investigate whether the environment was influential in the development of stone tools. This time period spans the origin of our genus Homo and the evolution of Homo erectus, and it provides evidence of increased behavioral complexity (stone tools), brain expansion, and the acquisition of large nutrient-rich food sources (animal carcasses). Because of the …

Very High Middle Miocene Surface Productivity On The U.S. Mid-Atlantic Shelf Amid Glacioeustatic Sea Level Variability, Marci M. Robinson, Harry J. Dowsett, Timothy D. Herbert Sep 2022

Very High Middle Miocene Surface Productivity On The U.S. Mid-Atlantic Shelf Amid Glacioeustatic Sea Level Variability, Marci M. Robinson, Harry J. Dowsett, Timothy D. Herbert

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO) provides important insights into how the climate system operates under elevated temperatures and atmospheric CO2 levels. Few western North Atlantic paleotemperature or paleoecological records exist from the MCO, despite their importance for understanding both regional and global climate dynamics. Here we present quantitative MCO paleoecological data from the western North Atlantic, specifically from the Baltimore Gas & Electric (BG&E) marine sediment core from southern Maryland, USA. We examine alkenones and planktic foraminifera and document the first sea surface temperature (SST) and productivity estimates for the MCO and the Middle Miocene Climate Transition (MMCT) from …

Geomorphic And Paleoclimatic Implications Of Glacial Extent Records In The Sierra Nevada Del Cocuy, Colombia During Termination 1, Jordan Nickerson Herbert Sep 2022

Geomorphic And Paleoclimatic Implications Of Glacial Extent Records In The Sierra Nevada Del Cocuy, Colombia During Termination 1, Jordan Nickerson Herbert

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Reconstructions of past glacial extents using geomorphic mapping and cosmogenic dating provide an opportunity to infer past climates. A record of the past extents of tropical mountain glaciers is particularly useful because there are few other means to reconstruct past temperatures in high-altitude, low-latitude locations. The tropics play an outsized role in mediating global climate, yet there is a lack of understanding of how the tropics may have influenced past climate changes such as the most recent deglaciation (Termination 1, ~18–11.7 ka). Improving reconstructions of tropical mountain glaciers will aid in understanding the role of the tropics in the global …

Rock-Fluid Interaction And The Incorporation Of Cations Into Calcite During Recrystallization In Multiple Hydrothermal Systems., Van Anh Nguyen Aug 2022

Rock-Fluid Interaction And The Incorporation Of Cations Into Calcite During Recrystallization In Multiple Hydrothermal Systems., Van Anh Nguyen

Theses and Dissertations

Fluid-rock interaction causes an exchange of isotopes or elements through various reactions. The rate of these reactions strongly depends on temperature. The interaction involves dissolution precipitation, chemical exchange reactions, redox reactions, diffusion, and their combinations. The goal of studying fluid-rock interaction is to understand the change in mineral chemistry of the rock materials when in contact with an aqueous solution. These processes occur in all regions of the Earth where aqueous solutions are found. This work is comprised of three independent studies which provide an understanding about crystallization processes under multiple hydrothermal conditions with geological and environmental applications.

Stratigraphic And Paleoenvironmental Analysis Of The Early Pleistocene Lake Tecopa Beds, Southeastern California, Marie Nicole White Aug 2022

Stratigraphic And Paleoenvironmental Analysis Of The Early Pleistocene Lake Tecopa Beds, Southeastern California, Marie Nicole White

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Paleo-Lake Tecopa was one of many lakes in the southwestern United States during the Pleistocene (2.5 – 0.012 Ma), which were controlled by Milankovitch-driven climatic cyclicity. While most studies emphasize the basin-filling lakes of the middle Pleistocene, this study investigates the early Pleistocene lacustrine deposits interpreted to represent alternating playa/shallow lake conditions. Geologic mapping, stratigraphic analysis, and mineralogical assessment via X-ray diffraction shows a significant lake phase in the east-central basin from ~2.5 to ~1.7 Ma. During this time, periods of alternating shallow lacustrine and beach/nearshore facies may reflect the 41-kyr obliquity cycles characteristic of the early Pleistocene. Faulting, soft-sedimentary …

The Application Of Detrital Zircon Geochronology, Pressure-Temperature Modeling, Monazite Petrochronology, And Quartz-In-Garnet Elastic Geobarometry To The Tectonic Evolution Of The Funeral Mountains And Related Metamorphic Core Complexes, Suzanne Renae Mulligan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This dissertation investigates and applies different techniques for studying mid-crustal metamorphic rocks including detrital zircon geochronology, monazite petrochronology, thermodynamic pressure-temperature modeling, and elastic geobarometry. The first chapter reconstructs stratigraphy in deformed metamorphic rocks from the Funeral Mountains metamorphic core complex in Death Valley, California, and the Bullfrog Hills, Nevada, using U-Pb detrital zircon (DZ) geochronology. This study documents another successful application of stratigraphic techniques applied to metamorphic rocks and migmatites. DZ geochronology identified Pahrump Group metasediments in rocks that were previously interpreted to be Paleoproterozoic basement gneisses, providing insights into the distribution of Rodinia rift basins. This analysis has shown …

Graphic Scotland: Visuality And Empire, 1810 – 1913, Laura Michelle Golobish

Art & Art History ETDs

Graphic Scotland: Visuality and Empire, 1810–1913 interrogates the aesthetic, technological, and literary conventions used to represent Scotland’s character in nineteenth-century publications. Beginning in the late eighteenth century, publishers, authors, and readers began to correlate the material format of prints, books, illustration, and bookbinding with individual and national character. Periodicals and literature drew the correlations between the aesthetic conventions of picturesque Scottish landscape, physiognomy of Scottish authors, and bookbinding to frame ideas about Scottish character as a didactic model for middle class British and American readers. Thus, Graphic Scotland offers an intertextual reading of three illustrated publications about Scotland–J.R. Osgood’s 1882 …

Tholos - Eva Sample Location Calibration Device, James Verheyden, Kat Gipson, Julia Rios, Ben Trust

Mechanical Engineering

To support NASA’s upcoming Artemis missions, an extravehicular activity (EVA) photometric calibration scale was developed to replace the Apollo-era Gnomon device. The Gnomon was a gimbaled stadia rod mounted on a tripod which provided color and reflectivity photo calibration, vertical orientation, and solar shadow direction, to include in photos of lunar geologic samples and features. With over 50 years of innovation since the first Gnomon deployment on Apollo 11, this redesign of the photometric calibration scale will support NASA’s missions in the modern day. The Tholos™, named after the ancient Greek repository of standardized measures, consists of a quadrupedal design …

Characterization Of Gas Hydrate Formation And Its Impact On Slope Stability In Offshore Environments, Sulav Dhakal May 2022

Characterization Of Gas Hydrate Formation And Its Impact On Slope Stability In Offshore Environments, Sulav Dhakal

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Natural gas hydrates (NGH) are predominantly methane hydrates formed at high pressure and low temperature conditions typically in submarine sediments and permafrost. This dissertation is focused on the submarine methane hydrates formed by upward migration of free and dissolved gas. The methane gas stored within natural hydrates has more energy potential than all the combined oil and gas resources around the world. Numerical simulation of fluid flow, heat transport, and geomechanical stresses is used to characterize and evaluate the saturation, distribution, reservoir quality, and geohazards associated with hydrate-bearing sediments. Coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) simulation of hydrate formation, dissociation, and slope stability …

Low-Temperature Plasticity Of Rock-Forming Minerals, Michael Keith Sly May 2022

Low-Temperature Plasticity Of Rock-Forming Minerals, Michael Keith Sly

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The rheology of the Earth’s crust and mantle is in part governed by the physical and mechanical properties of feldspar, quartz, calcite, and olivine. Over the past several decades a significant number of experimental studies have been performed on these minerals. Conventional experiments are generally performed at elevated temperatures because much of the viscoplastic deformation of these minerals is accommodated by high-temperature mechanisms. There is, however, evidence of viscoplastic deformation at lower temperatures (T ≤ 0.3Tm) in the uppermost mantle and throughout the crust. Micromechanical experimental techniques, including nanoindentation and micropillar deformation, can be used to achieve plastic deformation at …

Technical science and innovation

The article presents the results of processing space images using PCA, ISODATA, K-Means and similar methods, as well as analysis based on GIS technologies. As a result of automatic and visual interpretation of the obtained images, intrusive complexes, linear and ring structures scattered throughout the Nurata region were identified. In particular, the result obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis proved that the composition of the 2R4G1B and 2R4G3B channels is one of the most effective methods for separating the intrusive massifs distributed in the region. Given that isolated intrusive massifs, linear and ring structures are directly related to gold mining zones …

Sources Of Hydrothermal Fluids Inferred From Oxygen And Carbon Isotope Composition Of Calcite, Keweenaw Peninsula Native Copper District, Michigan, Usa, Thomas Bodden, Theodore J. Bornhorst, Florence Bégué, Chad Deering

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The Mesoproterozoic North American Midcontinent Rift hosts the world’s largest accu-mulation of native copper in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. During a regional metamorpho-genic‐hydrothermal event, native copper was deposited along with spatially zoned main‐stage minerals in a thermal high. This was followed by deposition of late‐stage minerals including minor copper sulfide. Inferences from the oxygen and carbon isotopic composition of main‐stage hydrothermal fluids, as calculated from 296 new and compiled isotopic measurements on calcite, are consistent with existing models that low‐sulfur saline native copper ore‐forming fluids were domi-nantly derived by burial metamorphic processes from the very low sulfur basalt‐dominated rift fill at …

Systematic Integration Of Applications Into The Surface Biology And Geology (Sbg) Earth Mission Architecture Study, Christine M. Lee, Nancy F. Glenn, E. Natasha Stavros, Jeff Luvall, Karen Yuen, Stephanie Schollaert Uz

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) concept is the first National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Earth mission to develop and implement systematic integration of science application needs at the architecture study stage. Prior NASA mission concept and planning activities presumed that science measurement needs would encompasss application measurement needs and so did not explicitly evaluate and include applications at this stage. However, the effort presented here identified, documented and integrated application needs that would not have been included by considering research science needs only. First, a low latency of no greater than 24 hr was identified as the optimal …

Coal Geology & Exploration

The No.8 deep coal seam in Daning-Jixian Block is large, thick, widely distributed, and rich in coalbed methane(CBM) resources. After volume acid fracturing, a breakthrough has been achieved in the producing test. However, the productivity of the testing wells varies greatly, and the major controlling factors of productivity are not clear, severely restricting the CBM development. In this paper, the testing wells in the No.8 coal seam with a buried depth of more than 2 000 m of the Upper Carboniferous Benxi Formation in Daning-Jixian Block were taken as the research object, and 28 typical evaluation indicators were selected from …
