A Changed Understanding Of Miracles In Religious Tourism, Stephen F. Haller
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
In this modern age, an unsceptical acceptance of supernatural events–those which cannot be explained as part of the natural order of things–is less common than it once was. This trend is reflected in the declining frequency of miracle-cures certified by the Medical Bureau at Lourdes. Yet miracles past, and the promise of possible miracles in the present, still attract multitudes of religious pilgrims and tourists to sacred sites all over the world. While the frequency of miracles goes down, the appeal of miracles goes on, and the number of religious visitors has not declined. What role do miracles now play …

A Proposed Tourism Cap On The Galapagos Islands: Beyond The Wildlife, Hannah M. Robertson
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Scientists have pleaded to both Galápagos and Ecuadorian officials to impose a tourism cap on land-based tourism to protect the biodiversity of the Islands. However, these proposals have offered little to no means of addressing the economic concerns or offsetting the impact a tourism cap would have on key revenue-producing industries and locals. Because of this, proposals for land-based tourism caps have gained little traction within Ecuador and the Galápagos.
This Note should serve as a guide for assessing what tourist restrictions are possible and how those restrictions would be implemented. Part I begins with an overview of the environmental …

However, artisans in the region often experience income instability or repeated fluctuations in monthly income, more than any other occupation. The fluctuating nature of the tourist market (a major revenue source), lack of access to e-commerce for further opportunities, and lack of regulation to protect artisan business and wages all cause income instability for artisans. As a result of income instability, many artisans in South Asia live in poverty. The consequences of income instability for artisans include the perpetuation of poverty, a shrinking artisan economy, and a shrinking global …
