Impact Of Study Abroad To Nazi Concentration Camps: Perceptions Of Interpreting Students On Identity-Building, Sherry Shaw, E. Lynn Jacobowitz, Kaitlynn Himmelreich
Journal of Interpretation
This study focuses on the perceptions of post-secondary interpreting students who traveled to concentration camps, Auschwitz-Birkenau (Poland) and Schloss Hartheim (Austria). The historical context of spoken language interpreters in concentration camps, eugenics in the Deaf community, and extermination of people with disabilities underpin the study’s mixed-methods design, incorporating social identity and transformative learning theories to explore professional identity development. A Deaf, Jewish moderator-participant facilitated four focus groups using photo elicitation to foster narratives. Participants ranked photos and value statements to reveal identity components that most impacted them. A grounded theory approach to analysis revealed four themes triangulated with survey data: …

Discovering The Lived Experiences Of Graduate Students In The Virtual Space: Reflections And Lessons From A Phenomenological Inquiry, Ernesto Cordero Collo
Discovering The Lived Experiences Of Graduate Students In The Virtual Space: Reflections And Lessons From A Phenomenological Inquiry, Ernesto Cordero Collo
Informasi
The COVID-19 pandemic has radically reshaped the academic life of graduate students and revealed the inequities in the traditional education system in the Philippines. This study is a qualitative navigation of the lived accounts of development communication (devcom) graduate students at the University of the Philippines Los Baños. It foregrounds devcom as a field of theory and practice in honor of its pioneer Professor Emeritus Nora C. Quebral and her contribution to the ferment of the field. The credence of phenomenology informed the direction of this research in addressing a paucity of literature that examines the experiences of graduate students …
From An International English Language Assessment Framework To A Teacher-Based Assessment: A Study Of Primary English Teachers' Agentive Perspectives And Projections, Santi Farmasari
REID (Research and Evaluation in Education)
This study explores four primary English teachers' agentive perspectives about assessment in their schools. Given the challenges brought by the abolition of International Standard School (ISS), the changed status of the school, and the exclusion of English from the 2013 National Education Curriculum (NEC), a teacher-based assessment was the only solution to the unavailability of assessment guidelines and the unsuitability of assessment materials and methods. Employing teacher agency theory, this study examines the agentive sides of the teachers' perspectives as they would represent the teachers' strategic solutions toward the school's emerging problems. The teacher-based assessment was expected to accommodate the …

The Failed Attempt To Overthrow The American Government: Crime And Insurrection, Frances P. Bernat
Journal of Criminal Justice and Law
President Trump, refusing to concede the 2020 Presidential election, claimed that there was election fraud. On January 6, 2021, the date set to finalize the election results by Congress, President Trump implored hundreds of thousands of his followers to march to the Capitol and “Stop the Steal.” Inside and outside the Capitol building, the police were overpowered by a mob of Trump supporters who did not want to have Joe Biden be formally declared the next U.S. President. The siege on the Capitol, in a failed attempted overthrow of the national government, was thwarted later that night. In the early …

Supervision For Advocacy: Supporting Self-Care, Kathleen J. Farkas, Jaroslaw Richard Romaniuk
Faculty Scholarship
The objective is to examine the intersection of advocacy for social change, the individual’s emotional costs of advocacy, and the use of trauma informed care in supervisory practice to encourage and support advocates and their work. Supervision models exist, but none address the needs of advocates who might become targets for scorn and persecution. The literature on trauma informed care provides a direction to improve the support and supervision of advocates, especially those who use their personal experiences as examples in their work. We reviewed data bases and relevant literature regarding supervision and the principles of trauma informed care. Periodical …

Meaning-Making Dynamics Of Job Interview Performances, Jacquelyn K. Bertman
Meaning-Making Dynamics Of Job Interview Performances, Jacquelyn K. Bertman
Graduate Masters Theses
Behavioral interviewing has become a popular technique used across fields to assess the fitness of job seekers (Roulin & Bangerter, 2012; Powers, 2000). This particular style of interviewing calls on the interviewee to narrate their prior experiences in the workforce, with the idea that past behavior on the job is prelude to future job performance. The answers (stories) follow a specific format in order to be considered successful, one that adheres to the style and organization of the dominant Discourse (Gee, 1989). However, storytelling is a culturally situated practice and candidates from diverse backgrounds may construct their narratives outside of …
Archaeology Of Disease And Medicinal Practices In 18th-Century Boston, Massachusetts, Kaitlyn N. Ball
Archaeology Of Disease And Medicinal Practices In 18th-Century Boston, Massachusetts, Kaitlyn N. Ball
Graduate Masters Theses
This research explores the knowledge of medical techniques during the early 18th century in Boston, Massachusetts, a period of modernization and changing attitudes toward disease. By analyzing archaeoparasitological samples, written accounts, and artifacts associated with medicinal practices, I shed light on attempts to treat parasitic diseases encountered by those living in urban Boston. The collections I have selected to analyze are samples of urban Boston life and provide ideal contexts for parasite preservation. I analyze samples from the Parker-Emery household privy (c. 1720-1750) in the North End and compare them to samples from the early 18th-century Town Dock landfill in …
Creating Community: Examining Black Identity And Space In New Guinea, Nantucket, Jared Muehlbauer
Creating Community: Examining Black Identity And Space In New Guinea, Nantucket, Jared Muehlbauer
Graduate Masters Theses
In the late 18th century, the abolition of slavery through manumission initiated a period of enormous change in the lives of people of African descent living on Nantucket, MA. Newly free, people of color living on the island immediately began to establish families and purchase property. At the end of the 1700s, they founded the community of New Guinea, located on the southwestern edge of the town of Nantucket. Though enslavement had been abolished and the whaling industry brought economic opportunity to Nantucket, the people of New Guinea continued to experience evolving forms of racial inequality, discrimination, and violence. To …
Philosophy In The Narrative Mode: Alexander The Great As An Ethical Character From Roman To Medieval Islamicate Literature, Anna Ayşe Akasoy
Philosophy In The Narrative Mode: Alexander The Great As An Ethical Character From Roman To Medieval Islamicate Literature, Anna Ayşe Akasoy
Publications and Research
Histories of Arabic and Islamic philosophy tend to focus on texts which are systematic in nature and conventionally classified as philosophy or related scholarly disciplines. Philosophical principles, however, are also defining features of texts associated with other genres. Within the larger field of philosophy, this might be especially true of ethics and within the larger body of literature this might be especially the case for stories. Indeed, it is sometimes argued that the very purpose of storytelling is to reinforce and disseminate moral conventions. Likewise, the moral philosopher can be conceptualized as a homo narrans.
The aim of this …

This research examines how women voice their narratives through tattoos by studying the experiences of seven tattooed women. Using the in-depth interview method, this research presents the narratives of these tattooed women in relation to their tattoos. Such narratives seem to be strongly intertwined with their life stories. The body is a medium in which a person can place certain markers to achieve certain purposes. As Butler theorizes, what the body displays is not the real self, but only an appearance according to the assumed or chosen role. In addition, according to Cixous, tattooing can be considered as a form …

Thinking In The Global South — Reflections On Anti-Vaxxers As An Instance Of Global Alterity, Raul Pertierra
Thinking In The Global South — Reflections On Anti-Vaxxers As An Instance Of Global Alterity, Raul Pertierra
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
Excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light several features of the present state of globality. In many countries, objections against vaccination have attracted media prominence. Although reasons for this resistance may differ from one country to another, there seems to be a common thread linking them globally. This paper examines this thread and explores its relationship to conditions underlying modernity. As some have argued (e.g., Latour 2014, Luhmann 1998), modernity is not an explanatory concept but a category that allows us to label a complex reality, which includes internal contradictions (e.g., a society of universal levelling whose mechanism effaces …
Counter-Producing National Narratives: Filipina Diasporic Artists Challenge The Global Health Care System, Christina Ayson Plank
Counter-Producing National Narratives: Filipina Diasporic Artists Challenge The Global Health Care System, Christina Ayson Plank
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
The Philippine nation-state relies on the production and circulation of hegemonic narratives that represent overseas Filipino workers as flexible laborers to generate profit through remittances. In this article, I analyze Lizza May David and Claudia Liebelt’s documentary Cycles of Care (2011) and Jenifer Wofford’s paintings and illustrations Point of Departure (2007) and Flor 1973-78 (2008) to demonstrate that these works of art counter national narratives by portraying Filipinos in non-capitalizable, non-laboring moments, thereby disrupting the mechanisms of global capitalism. I argue that Filipino artists employ what I call counter-production, an artistic practice that represents the fragmented experiences of displacement, critiques …
The Concept Of Myth In Kōsaka Masaaki And Miki Kiyoshi’S Critique, Fernando Wirtz
The Concept Of Myth In Kōsaka Masaaki And Miki Kiyoshi’S Critique, Fernando Wirtz
Comparative Philosophy
This paper explores the concept of myth in two books written by Kōsaka Masaaki, The Historical World (1937) and Philosophy of the Nation (1942). In both, myth appears as a central moment in the transition from primitive to modern societies. The role of myth is closely related to Kōsaka’s notion of nature, since one goal of his reflection is to show how history is supported by the “substratum” of nature. In this sense, he also distinguishes between the natural and historical aspects of nations. After analyzing the subcategories of primordial nature, environmental nature, and historical nature, the paper shows how …
The Yi-Jing Cosmic Model As A Framework For Comparative Philosophy, Harry Donkers
The Yi-Jing Cosmic Model As A Framework For Comparative Philosophy, Harry Donkers
Comparative Philosophy
Based on the symbolism of the trigrams, the Yi-Jing cosmic model offers possibilities in a coordinate system with eight octants to discuss different philosophical developments in parallel. It forms a framework for further elaboration of theory and methodology of comparative philosophy. This paper is restricted to extracting, analyzing and comparing common features from the perspectives of the Yi-Jing model. Achieving harmony is the subject of a new paper under construction. The philosophical developments in the quadrants, Naturalism, Moralism, Rationalism and Humanism, are characterized by a fundamental difference between subject and object. This difference remains intact in the octants, but specified …
New Rules Of The Game: The Politization Of Community Courts In Mozambique, Molly Utter
New Rules Of The Game: The Politization Of Community Courts In Mozambique, Molly Utter
Washington International Law Journal
After a fifteen-year civil war, the Mozambique government turned to customary justice to address the conflicts that emerged during the war by creating Community Courts. The goal of the Community Courts was to mimic their successful grassroots predecessors, the Popular Courts, and to bring justice to the people, by the people. Yet one year before the creation of the Community Courts, the Mozambican government implemented the Law on the Organization of the Judiciary, which limited formal jurisdiction to the district level and excluded grassroot courts from the official judicial structure. Grassroot courts, most significantly the Popular Courts, ceased to run …

Legalizing Local: Alaska's Unique Opportunity To Create An Equitable And Sustainable Seaweed Farming Industry, Logan Miller
Alaska Law Review
The seaweed farming industry in Alaska is in its nascent stages. There is tremendous potential for growth, but also risk of exploitation and inequitable outcomes. Alaskans have a unique and urgent opportunity to enact policies that can ensure and promote equitable, sustainable development that centers the voices and interests of marginalized groups—including Indigenous and rural populations—and provides benefits to local economies. This Note seeks to contribute to the creation of a sound policy framework for the responsible development of Alaska’s seaweed farming industry by advancing both a theoretical framework and specific policy recommendations. Drawing from the experiences of other jurisdictions …

Assessing Scholarly Debates On The Significance Of The Deity Xiwangmu In Han Dynasty Tomb Art, Pattira Thaithosaeng, Suradej Intagorn
Journal of Letters
This paper discusses differing representations of Xiwangmu in Han art and texts. While these representations share some characteristics that indicate the same deity, Han artists’ created a wide variety pictures of Xiwangmu in tomb murals. Many leading scholars have produced excellent pieces of scholarship regarding Xiwangmu as depicted in Han art. The Han period was a significant time for the transformation of Xiwangmu. Various descriptions of her were recorded in pre-Han texts, and she gradually became a deity representing yin during the Han dynasty. However, Han texts do not provide a clear explanation for this change. We believe that Han …
