A Brief Treatise On Bayesian Inverse Regression., Debashis Chatterjee Dr.
A Brief Treatise On Bayesian Inverse Regression., Debashis Chatterjee Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Inverse problems, where in a broad sense the task is to learn from the noisy response about some unknown function, usually represented as the argument of some known functional form, has received wide attention in the general scientific disciplines. However, apart from the class of traditional inverse problems, there exists another class of inverse problems, which qualify as more authentic class of inverse problems, but unfortunately did not receive as much attention. In a nutshell, the other class of inverse problems can be described as the problem of predicting the covariates corresponding to given responses and the rest of the data. …

Exact Inference For Meta-Analysis Of Rare Events And Its Application In Human Genetics, Yanqiu Shao
Exact Inference For Meta-Analysis Of Rare Events And Its Application In Human Genetics, Yanqiu Shao
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
Meta-analysis is a statistical approach that integrates data from multiple studies. By aggregating information, it enhances the power to detect the effects of interest and provides an estimate of the effect size with both accuracy and precision. Both fixed-effect and random-effect models are developed and widely used in biomedical research including clinical trials and genomic studies. In the case of rare events data, conventional meta-analysis methods that rely on large sample approximation may not be able to make reliable inferences. There have been various approaches proposed to deal with this situation, in particular, rare binary adverse events in clinical studies. …
Differential Methods In Modern Biological Data Analysis, Micah Thornton
Differential Methods In Modern Biological Data Analysis, Micah Thornton
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
Analysis of biological data for differentiation of organisms/cells within and across species or even the same organism is important to a wide variety of applications. This work considers three different biological data sets at the genome, proteome, and epigenome levels: respectively, DNA sequences, glycosalation data, and DNA methylation. We explore some statistical modeling approaches for handling these modern datasets, and provide a relevant set of experiments for explanation and illustration.
First, genomic Fourier coefficients, which capture information about the harmonics of genetic sequences in terms of nucleotide pattern recurrence are investigated as summary metrics for medium sized virus genomes from …

Exploring Improvements To The Convergence Of Reconstructing Historical Destructive Earthquakes, Kameron Lightheart
Exploring Improvements To The Convergence Of Reconstructing Historical Destructive Earthquakes, Kameron Lightheart
Theses and Dissertations
Determining risk to human populations due to natural disasters has been a topic of interest in the STEM fields for centuries. Earthquakes and the tsunamis they cause are of particular interest due to their repetition cycles. These cycles can last hundreds of years but we have only had modern measuring instruments for the last century or so which makes analysis difficult. In this document, we explore ways to improve upon an existing method for reconstructing earthquakes from historical accounts of tsunamis. This method was designed and implemented by Jared P Whitehead's research group over the last 5 years. The issue …

Some Nonparametric Hybrid Predictive Models : Asymptotic Properties And Applications., Tanujit Chakraborty Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Prediction problems like classification, regression, and time series forecasting have always attracted both the statisticians and computer scientists worldwide to take up the challenges of data science and implementation of complicated models using modern computing facilities. But most traditional statistical and machine learning models assume the available data to be well-behaved in terms of the presence of a full set of essential features, equal size of classes, and stationary data structures in all data instances, etc. Practical data sets from the domain of business analytics, process and quality control, software reliability, and macroeconomics, to name a few, suffer from various …

Deconstructing Sex Differences In C-Reactive Protein Trends Over Time, Ashley W. Kranjac, Dinko Kranjac, Olivia Lounsbury
Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
Objectives
Heightened inflammatory state, as measured by circulating C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, can promote inflammation-mediated disease risk. It is important to account for population fluctuation and sex variation in serum CRP concentrations on overall time trends.
Methods
Using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data, we specify linear and algebraic decomposition models separately by sex to identify the drivers of the changing trends in the distribution of CRP values in the population.
Results
We found a nonsignificant overall increase in CRP, but a significant decrease among women and increase among men, over a 10-year period. We then used linear …

This article analyzes ethno-demographic data, their study and, in turn, is based on population censuses. Historical aspects of ethno-demographic data in population censuses are presented. This article study the importance of censuses as a historical source, the importance of ethno-demographic data for highlighting the history of the population in such lists is emphasized.

On Neuroscience-Inspired Statistical And Computational Problems, Zifan Li
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Recent years have witnessed a surge of problems lying at the intersection of statistics andneuroscience. In this thesis, we explore various statistical and computational problems that are inspired by neuroscience. This thesis consists of two main parts, each inspired by a different system in the brain. In the first part, we study problems related to the visual system. In Chapter 2, we investigate the problem of estimating the collision time of a looming object using a theoretical formulation based on statistical hypothesis testing. In Chapter 3, we build computational models for the compound eye of Drosophila, and analyze how the …
Statistical Estimation And Inference Improvements For Exoplanet Discovery, Parker Hinckley Holzer
Statistical Estimation And Inference Improvements For Exoplanet Discovery, Parker Hinckley Holzer
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The radial velocity method has been widely used by astronomers since the 1990's for discovering extra-solar planets, often referred to as simply "exoplanets". This method involves estimating the radial velocity of a distant star over time using the stellar light, followed by modeling such radial velocity estimates as a function of time using Keplerian-orbital equations with parameters that describe the exoplanet. While a number of approaches exist for estimating the radial velocity from the stellar light, we introduce a new approach for this that uses Hermite-Gaussian functions to reduce the estimation to linear least-squares regression. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this …
Learning, Optimization And Data Translation With Deep Neural Networks, Ganlin Song
Learning, Optimization And Data Translation With Deep Neural Networks, Ganlin Song
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Neural networks have been intensively studied as machine learning models and widely applied in various areas. This thesis investigates three problems related to the theory and application of neural networks. First, we analyze a learning scheme for neural networks that uses random weights in the backpropagation training algorithm, which is considered to be more biologically plausible than the standard training procedure. We establish theory that shows the convergence of the loss and the alignment between the forward weights of the network and the random weights used in the backward pass. Second, we study a family of optimization problems where the …
Ultra-High Dimensional Bayesian Variable Selection With Lasso-Type Priors, Can Xu
Ultra-High Dimensional Bayesian Variable Selection With Lasso-Type Priors, Can Xu
Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations
With the rapid development of new data collection and acquisition techniques, high-dimensional data have emerged from various fields. Consequentially, new variable selection methods especially in ultra-high dimensional problems are demanding.
The first part of this dissertation focuses on developing a new Bayesian variable selection method for a differential expression analysis using raw NanoString nCounter data. The medium-throughput mRNA abundance platform NanoString nCounter has gained great popularity in the past decade, due to its high sensitivity and technical reproducibility as well as remarkable applicability to ubiquitous formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue samples. Based on RCRnorm developed for normalizing NanoString nCounter …
