Insignificant Impacts Of Covid-19 Stay-At-Home Orders On Chicago Air Quality, Adam W.T. Steffeck
DePaul Discoveries
With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, reports of air quality improvements around the world resulting from the stay-at-home orders were widespread. However, for Chicago, no significant air quality improvements occurred despite large reductions in private vehicle transportation due to the lack of commuters. The city of Chicago is a nexus for long-haul transportation by trucks and trains, which did not decrease during the pandemic. These transportation sources use mostly diesel fuel engines and emit NOX, a precursor to tropospheric ozone, and PM2.5, both of which are harmful air pollutants. Using open access EPA air quality …

Estimated Cost Of Tuition-Free College In Illinois, Michelle Miller-Adams, Brian Pittelko, Bridget F. Timmeney
Reports
This memo estimates the cost of two possible program designs for a statewide college scholarship program for the State of Illinois. These assumptions and associated cost estimates, once approved or revised, will form the basis for the next stage of this project, which is assessing the economic impact of tuition-free college in Illinois.

Economic Benefits And Costs Of Tuition-Free College In Illinois, Timothy J. Bartik, Michelle Miller-Adams, Brian Pittelko, Bridget F. Timmeney
Reports
This memo estimates the main economic benefits of tuition-free college in Illinois. These economic benefits are compared with the costs of making tuition free. In addition, we consider possible fiscal benefits of tuition-free college and whether these fiscal benefits for Illinois will offset the fiscal costs of making tuition free. This memo is based on cost estimates presented to the State of Illinois in an August 2020 memo entitled “Estimated Cost of Tuition-Free College in Illinois” and should be considered in conjunction with that memo.
Community Needs Assessment For Mclean County, Hannah Lynn Curry
Community Needs Assessment For Mclean County, Hannah Lynn Curry
Theses and Dissertations
A community needs assessment was conducted for McLean County, Illinois assessing the community level resources that are in place for ex-offenders reintegrating into the community and further resources that are needed. The purposive sample included 7 local agencies that provided a range of reentry services. Intensive interviewing was conducted with respondents of local agencies. Audio-recordings of interviews were transcribed, coded through software and analyzed. Results indicated that boundary spanners and mental health services are the common types of resources in place for ex-offenders in McLean County. Further resources that are needed include housing, employment and mental health services.

The Effects Of Legalization Of Recreational Cannabis In Illinois, Stephanie Chambers-Baltz
The Effects Of Legalization Of Recreational Cannabis In Illinois, Stephanie Chambers-Baltz
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
In 2019, the Illinois House passed the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act that legalized the recreational use of cannabis. The Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act became law in the state of Illinois as of January 1, 2020, making Illinois the first state to establish such a law via state legislation, as opposed to a ballot measure approved by voters. This law allows adults aged 21 and older to legally purchase cannabis for recreational purposes. This law has significant implications for social equity and for public health. The Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act was intentionally designed to address and repair some …
Increasing Patient Access To Medication-Assisted Treatment Programs For Opioid Use Disorder, Matthew J. Bednarchik
Increasing Patient Access To Medication-Assisted Treatment Programs For Opioid Use Disorder, Matthew J. Bednarchik
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The project sought to explore the perceived need for Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder among primary care providers in a rural central Illinois county. This project’s primary goal was to measure the prevalence of OUD in the community and the likelihood of primary care providers referring to an outpatient MAT program. A secondary objective was to utilize the survey results as a tool for the development of a MAT program. A cohort of twenty-five primary care providers were invited to participate in a survey to assess the perceived prevalence of OUD as well as the need for increased …

Pinball Wars: Slot Machines, Pinball Games, Racketeering, And Murder In Mid-Twentieth Century Rural Illinois, Benjamin Bradley
Research Papers
Pinball was seized upon by organized crime for its ability to pass as an amusement device rather than a gambling mechanism. Pinball inherited this role from slot machines, which were often disguised as novelty toys or vending machines to circumvent increasingly strict anti-gambling laws in early twentieth century America. Pinball uniquely filled the role as a gambling device because of its ability to appear as a game of skill and amusement rather than of chance and speculation.
In January of 1960, Bunice Tyner, a resident of Marion, Illinois was murdered in what the local press dubbed a pinball war. His …
Kamila Clustering For A Mixed-Type Data Analysis Of Illinois Medicare Data, Heather Elizabeth Baldacci
Kamila Clustering For A Mixed-Type Data Analysis Of Illinois Medicare Data, Heather Elizabeth Baldacci
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The Centers for Medicare and Medicare Services (CMS) releases annual reports regarding the Market Saturation and Utilization of nationwide Medicare coverage. CMS data provide an opportunity for an in-depth analysis of Medicare usage patterns within the United States that may provide insight into socioeconomic conditions in certain regions. To discover any potential patterns, the KAMILA (KAy-means for MIxed LArge data sets) clustering algorithm has been utilized within the most recent CMS dataset from 2018. Due to the large size of the original data set, the focus of this research has been limited to Illinois Medicare data, grouped by the 102 …
