Investigating The Lack Of Consensus Among Sentiment Analysis Tools, Ma Palomino, Ap Varma, A Connelly

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Sentiment analysis, the classification of human emotion expressed in text, has the potential to enhance our ability to analyse the ever growing amount of information published each day on social media. Thus, we compare here seven of the most well-regarded sentiment analysis tools, and conclude that none of them is sufficiently reliable to be used on its own. Combining them and relying on their results only when various tools reach an agreement seems to be a better option. The pros and cons of such an approach are discussed in this paper, while providing recommendations related to the usability of the …

These organizations have partnered with companies to create monetary value for the team and the companies, which has led sponsorship from traditional advertising in the arena or venue of the professional sports organization to their team’s Twitter account. I investigated how fans of the professional sports organization recognized sponsored content on the organizations' Twitter pages concerning the Communication Theory of Identity (CTI). I then compared the sponsored and organic contents' interaction rates to see if there were similarities or differences between those rates. The …

Single-Subject Analyses Reveal Altered Performance And Muscle Activation During Vertical Jumping, John R. Harry, Jeffrey D. Eggleston, Janet S. Dufek, C. Roger James

Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences Faculty Research

Effects of barefoot and minimal footwear conditions on performance during jumping (i.e., jump displacement) are unclear with traditional group-level studies because of intra- and interindividual variability. We compared barefoot, minimal, and conventional athletic footwear conditions relative to countermovement vertical jump (CMVJ) performance and muscle activation using a single-subject approach. Fifteen men (1.8 ± 0.6 m; 84.5 ± 8.5 kg; 23.8 ± 2.3 y) performed three CMVJ trials in barefoot, minimal, and conventional footwear conditions while ground reaction forces (GRF) and electromyograms of eight lower extremity muscles were recorded. The Model Statistic procedure (α = 0.05) compared conditions for CMVJ displacement, …

Out Of Mind: Undergraduate Predictors Of Generalized Anxiety Disorder Symptoms, Michael S. Lanzaro

Honors Theses

Demographic factors associated with anxiety have been studied extensively and are often characterized by interconnected relationships. These associations between variables provide insight into the predictive ability of anxiety in undergraduate populations. However, few studies if any have investigated the relationships between class level, sex, honors status, and undergraduate specialization as predictors of anxiety among an undergraduate American university sample. The results of this study provide key insight into the psychopathological development of undergraduate students and anxiety levels as it pertains to academic and demographic variables. By using a multiple linear regression analysis, demographic variables of American undergraduate students are compared …

You Are Academia, Jason Faust

Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones

Jason Faust’s You Are Academia presents the modern landscape of academia as a passive system of exponential growth. The core gameplay mechanic suggests that the fundamental purpose of current higher learning structures is meant to improve revenue and the quantity of works produced—not necessarily the quality of student education. This is a work of overt satire and takes roughly 20 minutes to complete.

Senior Woman Administrators' Perceptions And Experiences Of Women Serving In Leadership Positions In Conference Offices, Kelly Patricia Elliott, Tim Kellison Dec 2020

Senior Woman Administrators' Perceptions And Experiences Of Women Serving In Leadership Positions In Conference Offices, Kelly Patricia Elliott, Tim Kellison

Journal of Applied Sport Management

NCAA conference office Senior Woman Administrators (SWAs) were surveyed to gain their perspective on the gender disparity reported in intercollegiate athletics. The perceptions offered by the SWAs indicate the need for NCAA conference offices to implement professional development programming for women aimed at increasing management skills, developing best practice guidelines for including SWAs in athletic administration, and establishing mentor programs for women working on member institution campuses. Additionally, the results indicate directors of athletics need to create more meaningful opportunities for women to participate in decision making and include SWAs in meetings with coaches and other staff members.

Enhancing Athletic Programs' Recruitment Success: A Strategic Planning Model Of Recruiting, Sean Dwyer Dec 2020

Enhancing Athletic Programs' Recruitment Success: A Strategic Planning Model Of Recruiting, Sean Dwyer

Journal of Applied Sport Management

A critical yet understudied element in recruiting success is understanding an athletic program’s strengths and weaknesses relative to influential college choice factors. The purpose of this study is to provide practitioners and researchers with a new approach to assess an athletic program’s recruiting process, improve its effectiveness and efficiency, and close the gap between what student-athletes desire in an athletic program and what the program offers. To achieve that end, collegiate football players (N = 66) at a NCAA FBS school were surveyed using a scale consolidated from past college choice factor scholarship. Exploratory factor analysis using principle-component analysis and …

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The purpose of the current study was to examine the impact of the points of attachment with the mediating impact of college students’ psychic income on their attendance and word-of-mouth behavioral intentions. A total of 537 samples were collected from college students at a mid-sized southwest university in the United States. A CFA was conducted to evaluate the psychometric properties of the scales. The hypothesized model was tested using a SEM with AMOS 26 software. Additionally, a bootstrapping method was employed to determine the indirect effect of the mediating variable of psychic income on the relationship between points of attachment …

The Way Of The Fight: An Analysis Of Mma Judging, Todd Feldman Dec 2020

The Way Of The Fight: An Analysis Of Mma Judging, Todd Feldman

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Judging is a controversial but rarely studied topic in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Most MMA scholarship focuses on health (e.g., head trauma) and training (e.g., dieting, strength, and conditioning), with relatively few exploring matters of judging even though judging is of considerable importance to the appeal and integrity of the sport. Thus, the purpose of this study is to fill this research void by analyzing data on MMA judging decisions to determine if MMA judging follows the criteria approved by the ABC MMA Rules Committee. To evaluate MMA judging, FightMetric data were gathered from a period spanning November 17, 2000 …
