Essays On Women And Work In India And On Other-Regarding Preferences, Sai Madhurika Mamunuru
Essays On Women And Work In India And On Other-Regarding Preferences, Sai Madhurika Mamunuru
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is a collection of three essays. In Essay I, I explore declining female workforce participation in India and propose the following explanation: Traditionally, Brahmin (upper caste) women were more secluded and did not work outside the house, while non-Brahmin, often poorer, women did. With increased income, non-Brahmin families withdraw women from the workforce in order to signal their enhanced social status. This is a part of a larger process of cultural emulation referred to as the Sanskritization of non-Brahmin families. Using a nationally representative panel dataset, I show, in favor of this hypothesis, that while Brahmin women’s participation …
"Disorientation": Its Theoretical Underpinnings And Its Political Potential At The University Of Puget Sound, Eli M. Harris
"Disorientation": Its Theoretical Underpinnings And Its Political Potential At The University Of Puget Sound, Eli M. Harris
Politics & Government Undergraduate Theses
For over half a century, student activists have been developing publications called ‘Disorientation Guides’ as a means for challenging the prevailing image of the University as a center for progressive education. Among countless other things, the guides provide a material and ideological critique of the University and seek to elevate the autonomy and power of the student body. They also serve as a useful resource for preserving institutional memory in order to illuminate the consistences in activist histories and student resistance movements. Future students can thus become informed, in their efforts to affect change and confront the University at systemic …

The Qualitative Report
In April 2019 the UK government reported that little progress had been made to remedy social outcomes inequality between Roma and the wider population, recommending further recognition of Roma, for example in census data, to enable identification of Roma, their needs, and how to meet those needs. In this article we present an account of one Roma woman’s journey from hiding her identity to celebrating it. We expose five critical incidents that challenge and mould her sense of identity and career aspiration, with insights into her hopes and dreams as she reflects upon the barriers she faces and attempts to …

"Foreign" Language: Examining Systemic Attitudes, Xenophobia, And Foreign Language Anxiety, Olivia Jennings
Honors Theses
With the focus on the systemic attitudes, this study examines previous background in foreign language, attitudes about language in general, and the relation of language to identity. This study stresses the defining process in the making of American as a national and cultural identity, and how it has changed over the years. It examines the role of xenophobia and xenoglossophobia in the context of American identity, and through its evolution in past and current sociopolitical believes impacting an overall disinterest in foreign language. The disinterest in foreign language is investigated to discover the reasons why foreign language programs are being …
Umuwi: Coming Home: Decolonizing Filipinx-American Identity, Theresa Joyce Esmejarda Arocena
Umuwi: Coming Home: Decolonizing Filipinx-American Identity, Theresa Joyce Esmejarda Arocena
Communication & Media Studies | Senior Theses
This study investigates Filipinx-American identity using contextual understandings of decolonization as a conceptual framework. We will explore some of the long-term consequences of colonization on identity in the Filipinx-American community, including labeling theory’s current psychologies within the community, the formation of certain ideologies, and the attempts to reconcile transgenerational trauma and dismantle negative ideologies within the community. Seven participants were selected through non-probability sampling and were interviewed individually over Zoom video conferencing. Participant interviews revealed five interconnected themes regarding how identity is formed and sustained. Given the complexity of identity, more research is needed to explain other nuances of the …

An Exploratory Mixed Methods Approach To Implicit And Explicit Identification With Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, Stephanie Jarvi Steele, Kayla Furbish, Thröstur Björgvinsson, Lance P. Swenson
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Background and objectives: Identification with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is uniquely related to NSSI behavior and predicts future NSSI. This exploratory, mixed methods study used implicit and explicit approaches to further understanding of NSSI identity. Methods: Participants included 15 treatment-seeking adults (60% female, 87% Caucasian) with lifetime NSSI. Participant age ranged from 19 to 38 years (M = 25.33, SD = 6.10). Implicit tasks were completed at two time points in a test-retest design, followed by a qualitative interview. Results: Qualitative data suggest that explicit NSSI identity is relevant to some individuals with NSSI history. Mixed methods analyses indicate that individuals …
The Influencer Experience: Identity Performance, Commodification, And Agency In Youtube Influencers, Aysha M. Vear
The Influencer Experience: Identity Performance, Commodification, And Agency In Youtube Influencers, Aysha M. Vear
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, the social media usage of young adults has seen exponential growth. This growth, both in numbers of users and time spent on various platforms, creates a greater opportunity to market lifestyles, goods, and behaviors to the masses. Corporations have taken to allocating more time and attention to reach those masses and utilize the quickest means to that end. One example of these means is the influencer, i.e., social media users who monetize their online performances through practices of self-branding, or developing a public image used for commercial and capital gain (Abidin, 2016). In this study, I focus …
Stratified Security Communities: Transatlantic Distrust And Identity Divergence, Afra Maike Herr
Stratified Security Communities: Transatlantic Distrust And Identity Divergence, Afra Maike Herr
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
With mounting pressure by the United States directly and through their strategic shift and slow abdication of leadership towards Asia and away from the transatlantic community, European states have growing incentive to cooperate more strongly and integrate their defense and security efforts. The absence of such a trend of integration points to internal barriers to growing cooperation countering the external dynamic. Utilizing the theory of security communities, this thesis explores German, French, and British understanding of leadership, defense, and their respective public opinions. Focusing on the security identities of all three nations and their visions for the community as well …
Understanding The Professional Experiences Of White Jewish Women In Higher Education: An Intrinsic Case Study Analysis, Janna M. Bernstein
Understanding The Professional Experiences Of White Jewish Women In Higher Education: An Intrinsic Case Study Analysis, Janna M. Bernstein
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The exploration of female professionals’ experiences within the realm of higher education is steadily increasing, yet researchers have yet to analyze, much less include, Jewish women. Following a qualitative intrinsic case study approach, this study assesses the lived experiences of ten white Jewish women professionals to better understand how they engage in the world of higher education differently than their non-Jewish counterparts. Using racial formation theory and intersectional analysis as theoretical frameworks, the research examined the current and historical literature on Jewish identity, the role of Jews and Jewish women in higher education, and the relevant methodological research. The study …

Does Bitcoin Use Affect Crime Rates?, Kevin Keane
Does Bitcoin Use Affect Crime Rates?, Kevin Keane
The Corinthian
Bitcoin is the most widely used cryptocurrency in the world because of its decentralized network that completes user-to-user transactions, eliminating the need for intermediaries. During 2017, the volume of Bitcoin transactions totaled $94.3 trillion. Bitcoin transactions are recorded in a public database called the blockchain. Although the blockchain can keep track of how many transactions there are, it can’t identify the people involved in transactions. The lack of identity increases the anonymity of Bitcoin transactions, making it less detectable when used for crime. Using the Uniform Crime Reporting’s state-level crime rate data and blockchain’s Bitcoin transaction information, I estimate the …
Use Of Drawings And Geometric Shapes In The Evaluation Of Urban Identity Use “Venn Diagrams” In Evaluation The Expected Of Urban Identity Of The Scheme Proposed Of The Maspero Triangle, Cairo, Egypt, Majid Al-Mahdi
Journal of the Arab American University مجلة الجامعة العربية الامريكية للبحوث
The Arab city has a distinctive urban identity that contains many architectural and urban elements as well as its social and cultural characteristics. These elements are exclusive to the Arab city. In this research, a number elements (as a model) were logically chosen through the use of some drawings and engineering drawings in an attempt to express the logic and significance of these elements and demonstrate their validity, in addition to use of the forms of art (Venn), which open a wide door to use new methods of urban assessment that make it easier for decision makers to make appropriate …
Struggle And Martyrdom: Abusive Power And Root Narrative In The Aftermath Of The Eritrean Revolution, Solon Simmons
Struggle And Martyrdom: Abusive Power And Root Narrative In The Aftermath Of The Eritrean Revolution, Solon Simmons
Peace and Conflict Studies
In this paper I have applied root narrative theory to the case of conflict in Eritrea, a small African country along the Red Sea that has been embroiled in conflict with its neighbors and the international community on and off since at least 1961. Examining a small sample of representative texts from the government of Eritrea and from international critics of the regime, I demonstrate that these parties—different moral languages that make it almost impossible for each side to see the point of view of the other. Using the semiotic structure of the story system implied by root narrative theory …
The Queer Agenda: A Fluid Education, Charlee Corra
The Queer Agenda: A Fluid Education, Charlee Corra
Summit to Salish Sea: Inquiries and Essays
Throughout this paper, I weave together various aspects of my identity in order to investigate how fluidity and questioning form an undercurrent of my being and therefore of the way I teach. Through metaphors and narratives of my experiences within environmental education and experiential learning I seek clarity and expansiveness rather than definitive answers, leaning into the certainty that change is inevitable and there are rarely any static answers. Using queerness, Judaism, and my scientific background as the layers of my unique identity lens and positionality, I explore the ways in which the power of questioning, critical thinking, democratic education …

(De)Valuing Multimodality: Exploring One Teacher-Writer’S Uneven Development In A Multimodal Composition Course, Mike P. Cook, Brandon Sams
Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education
This paper examines the learning experiences and identity development of one ELA pre-service teacher (Elise) in a multimodal composition course. The authors rely on single-case study methods to understand Elise’s multimodal compositions and reflections across the semester. This inquiry asks: a) In what ways does a multimodal literacy course influence PSTs' views of and positions on multimodal literacy instruction? b) What influence does a course focused on multimodal literacy/composing have on the identity development of ELA/writing teachers? c) What prior experiences and understandings facilitate or prevent PSTs uptake of multimodal concepts? Findings detail 1) how Elise at once valued and …
Youth’S Usage Of New Media: Exploring Learning And Identity Formation, Nurzali Ismail
Youth’S Usage Of New Media: Exploring Learning And Identity Formation, Nurzali Ismail
The Qualitative Report
This study investigated youth’s usage of new media technologies in and out of school as well as how it relates to learning and identity formation. Even though youth’s usage of new media in school is inferior compared to out of school, it does not mean that both contexts are disconnected. In fact, there is a possible relationship established between both contexts and such connection can prove to be significant for youth’s learning and identity formation. Communities of Practice (COPs) was adopted as the theoretical foundation of the study. The research method employed was case study. Data collection involved six 13 …
National Education System In The Educational Ideas Of Jadidism, Yulduz Namazova
National Education System In The Educational Ideas Of Jadidism, Yulduz Namazova
The Light of Islam
The philosophy of education, which was formed in Turkestan in the late 19th - early 20 th centuries, is interpreted as an area of research that analyzes the national pedagogical activity and educational foundations of these modern educators, its goals and ideals, the methodology of pedagogical knowledge, methods of creating a new Russian school system. Thus, it can be said with confidence that the philosophy of education, as an area that has a socio-institutional form during this period, reflected the goals and objectives of the educational program of the Jadids. We know that during the formation of the Jadid Enlightenment, …
Mahmudkhuja Behbudiy As A Leader Of Jadid Reforms, Muminjon Xujaev
Mahmudkhuja Behbudiy As A Leader Of Jadid Reforms, Muminjon Xujaev
The Light of Islam
We are witnessing that the ideas of our Jadids, who tried to raise Turkestan through enlightenment to the level of world civilization at the beginning of the 20th century, and who showed modern education as a solution to the problems of that period, have not lost their signifcance today. In this sense, the study of the works of the famous orientalist Mahmudkhodja Behbudi based on new scientifc criteria plays an important role in the study of issues of interethnic communication, peaceful coexistence, education, culture, and religious tolerance. M. Behbudi in the late 19th and early 20th centuries began a systematic …
Dance And Know You Are A Part: The Instrumentality Of Performative Politics And Dance In The Configuration Of Local Social Memory And Afro-Brazilian Identity And Agency In Pelotas, Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil, Triston R. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The arts have been a refuge from perpetual repression and omission, and, a platform for social activism for Afro-descendants in the Americas. In Brazil this is very much the case. With performance serving as a social barometer or a looking glass, dance becomes a source of cultural knowledge, acts as preservative, and negotiates individual mobility within a given context. The Afro-Brazilian dance company, Cia de Dança Daniel Amaro in Pelotas, Brazil grants its members a means of activism and agency to challenge entrenched national narratives and reinterpret local social memory.
Most academic writings about dance or performance in Brazil, focus …
A Narrative Analysis Of Psychological Adjustments Of Professionals Transitioning To Work Following Cerebral Vascular Accident (Cva), Mabel Munachiso Korie
A Narrative Analysis Of Psychological Adjustments Of Professionals Transitioning To Work Following Cerebral Vascular Accident (Cva), Mabel Munachiso Korie
Theses & Dissertations
This research study was a narrative analysis of the psychological adjustment of professionals transitioning to work after a cerebral vascular accident, commonly known as a stroke. The purpose of this research was to explore the psychological adjustment of professionals who returned to work after a stroke following their subsequent rehabilitation. This has been an important subject because stroke research predominantly addresses older adults, which means that there has not been enough information on the experience of affected working-age professionals. The Roy Adaptation Model and Social Cognitive Theory were the frameworks for the study. The data collected were from audio-recorded and …
The Cape Verde Jews: An Identity Puzzle, Marco Piazza
The Cape Verde Jews: An Identity Puzzle, Marco Piazza
Journal of Cape Verdean Studies
The American historian and epistemologist Hayden White said that «there can be no ‘proper history’ which is not at the same time ‘philosophy of history’» (1973, p. XI). But it could also be argued that one cannot make history of philosophy or history of ideas without working on historical data. The data on which I would like to draw attention in this contribution are seemingly reducible to a small thing: they refer to a micro-history that has left few traces, some tombs, surnames, oral memories, and a couple of toponyms. In these pages I will try to show how emblematic …
Approaches And Treatment Of Languages In Multiethnic Societies. Case Study: Republic Of North Macedonia, Arta Toci
UBT International Conference
Multiculturalism is a doctrine under which several cultures interact in a common context. In these societies each group differentiates for its civilization, mentality and language. However, the definition of multiculturalism depends mainly on the social, political, cultural and sociolinguistic context. In multicultural societies it is expected that there are social groups which carry out their cultural values such as the language. However, are the multicultural societies always multilingual, too? The insistence of building a monolingual ideology in a multicultural and multiethnic country will always fail because the role of the language in these societies is not only to establish mutual …
A New Twist On The “Un-African” Script: Representing Gay And Lesbian African Weddings In Democratic South Africa, Michael W. Yarbrough
A New Twist On The “Un-African” Script: Representing Gay And Lesbian African Weddings In Democratic South Africa, Michael W. Yarbrough
Publications and Research
This essay examines the media coverage surrounding two African weddings of lesbian and gay couples in South Africa, as a lens onto the evolving cultural politics of black queerness in that country. Two decades after South Africa launched a world-leading legal framework for LGBTI protections, I argue that these media representations depict the growing inclusion of black LGBTIQ people as a process of bridging the supposed “gap” between homosexuality and African culture. This new “bridging the gap” script seemingly rejects the older, dominant script portraying homosexuality as intrinsically “un-African.” But I argue that it instead reproduces the “un-African” script in …
The Trabant And The Mercedes: A Psychological Analysis Into The Disjunction Of German Reunification, Faith Morris
The Trabant And The Mercedes: A Psychological Analysis Into The Disjunction Of German Reunification, Faith Morris
Senior Theses
Ostalgie, a combination of the German words Ost (east) and Nostalgie (nostalgia), is the psychological phenomenon that describes former East Germans’ longing for a return to aspects of life from the period of communist rule. This paper explores the phenomenon of Ostalgie in reunified Germany in relation to psychological constructs of nostalgia and collective identity.
Ostalgie is essentially both a means and an end. This paper seeks to prove Ostalgie is a means of creating identity, formulated by the interplay of nostalgia and certain social conditions that combined with and aided the failure of democratic capitalism for former East …
Pushing The Limits Of Black Atlantic And Hispanic Transatlantic Studies Through The Exploration Of Three U.S. Afro-Latio Memoirs, Julia Luján
Theses and Dissertations
In my dissertation project I intend to push the boundaries, by placing them in dialogue with each other, of both the Black Atlantic and the Hispanic Transatlantic Studies while exploring the cultural production of two groups that are generally excluded from the scholarly research done on the African Diaspora: U.S. Afro-Latinos and Afro-Argentines. While Black Atlantic Studies focuses on the Anglophone world and Hispanic Transatlantic Studies focuses on the Spanish-speaking world, they both ignore the two groups mentioned above as they complicate the boundaries of these fields by sitting at the intersections of race, language, and location.
Furthermore, I explore …

Indigenous Coaches And The National Aboriginal Hockey Championships, Dallas Gerald Hauck
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis explores the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC), an annual hockey tournament held in Canada where Indigenous youth compete in provincial/territorial teams. Research focused especially on the insights that coaches, organizers, and other tournament officials can provide into this tournament that aims to both highlight the skills of Indigenous players and also to provide cultural activities and enhance pride. Drawing on interviews at the NAHC at the 2019 tournament in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, this thesis aims to understand the impact the tournament has on those involved, as well as outside influences that constrain and impact the event. The major …
Unmoderated Focus Groups As A Tool For Inquiry, Martha M. Canipe
Unmoderated Focus Groups As A Tool For Inquiry, Martha M. Canipe
The Qualitative Report
Focus groups are a commonly used methodology to explore ideas in a group setting with a researcher acting as moderator. However, in some contexts the presence of a moderator may unduly influence the responses of focus group participants. I report on the use of unmoderated focus groups, a modification of the traditional focus group methodology. Unmoderated focus groups are made up solely of participants in the research study and as such remove the direct influence of the researcher. I found that this methodology uncovered richer identity stories than interviews did alone. In this article, I present the methodology as well …
From Movement To Self: A Literature Review On The Potential Effect Of Dance Movement Therapy On The Understanding Of Self-Identity For People With Borderline Personality Disorder, Natalia Santiago
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This literature review looks at whether Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) might be useful when treating identity disturbances within Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). It begins by analyzing the role of identity within one’s life. Identifying how self-concept strongly impacts how one perceives and behaves within their surroundings. Identity disturbance is a characteristic of BPD that has been found to be pervasive. The lack of self-concept is also tied to the other symptoms of BPD, such as impulsivity, dysregulation, and difficulties with interpersonal relationships. Genetics, brain function, and complex childhood trauma are thought to impact the development of BPD. Persistent adverse experiences can …
Self-Categorization Theory, Shay Xuejing Yao
Self-Categorization Theory, Shay Xuejing Yao
Communication Faculty Publications
Self-categorization theory (SCT) argues that people can perceive themselves as unique individuals or as members of a group (Turner, Hogg, Oakes, Reicher, & Wetherell, 1987). SCT is a theory that explains the situations in which people perceive themselves as individuals or group entities and the implications of such perceptions. The target research area of SCT lies in the personal and group aspects of individual’s psychological process.
