In this edition of the Links Magazine, we highlight the current issues, research, innovations, and perspectives of these institutions around palliative care. We recognize the importance of this human right and the role nurses and midwives have in advancing care for those in need of palliative health services. As is made evident in this publication, there are important areas where timely, evidence-based, and strategic efforts are needed to ensure that individuals are effectively cared for across the lifespan and varying levels of health and wellness. By promoting awareness and collaboration around this global health priority, we can ensure a healthier …

Central Coast Vna Palliative Care Volunteer Program, Jacquelyn Taueetia
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The Central Coast VNA Visiting Nurse Association provides the highest quality health care to patients through physicians, hospice medical directors, nurses, medical social workers, spiritual care counselors, and volunteers. VNA currently does not have a volunteer program specifically for palliative care patients for their Palliative Care Team. Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and family by addressing physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs (VNA, 2019). 94.9% of patients are referred to VNA because they need support for the patient and family …
Hospital-Based Palliative Care Programs: Perspectives Regarding Conceptualization And Accreditation, Karen L. Walker
Hospital-Based Palliative Care Programs: Perspectives Regarding Conceptualization And Accreditation, Karen L. Walker
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Palliative care has been shown to improve symptoms and increase quality of life in people with a life-limiting illness. Despite growth in hospital-based palliative care programs throughout the United States, only 91 hospitals have obtained The Joint Commission’s Advanced Palliative Certification. The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify how programs that do not have The Joint Commission’s Advanced Palliative Care Certification defined and conceptualized palliative care. An additional focus was to identify the barriers these programs perceived or experienced that prevented them from obtaining the advanced palliative care certification. This research program began with an evolutionary concept analysis …

Nurse And Patient Spiritual Care Perspectives Compared: A Cross-National Collaboration, Pamela H. Cone, Tove Giske
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Findings from a two-phased mixed-method 2014 study done in Norway on nurse and patient perspectives about spiritual care were compared for commonalities and differences. Nurses and patients have similar comfort levels with many deeply personal questions, but some surprises reveal opposing views. Nurses need a better understanding of patient perspectives.

Factors Related To 30-Day Readmission Among Hispanics With Type 2 Diabetes, Athena Mohebbi
Factors Related To 30-Day Readmission Among Hispanics With Type 2 Diabetes, Athena Mohebbi
Dissertations
Background: Medicare spends $17 billion yearly on 30-day readmissions. Hispanic adults have a higher prevalence of diabetes (12.6%) compared to non-Hispanic whites (9.4%). Those with a diagnosis of diabetes have the 17% higher rate (14-23%) for 30-day readmission. Little research has been conducted on Hispanics with diabetes relative to 30-day readmissions. Aims: Among Hispanics with type 2 diabetes: 1) measure the incidence of 30-day readmission by sociodemographic, behavioral and clinical factors;2) identify independent factors associated with 30-day readmission among Hispanic adults with type 2 diabetes accounting for potential covariates; 3) compare the ability of the Hispanic Diabetic Study Model plus …

The Effectiveness Of A Robotic Seal On Compassion Satisfaction In Acute Care Nurses: A Mixed Methods Approach, Jo S. Henson
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Problem: Nurses face a variety of stressors that can result in decreased levels of compassion satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of a computerized interactive social assist robot (PARO) to decrease stressors and increase compassion levels of acute care nurses in an inpatient setting.
Theory: The Professional Quality of Life Model posits that low Compassion Satisfaction, Burnout, and Secondary Traumatic Stress leads to Compassion Fatigue.
Hypotheses: It was hypothesized that interaction with a social assist robot with artificial intelligence will result in decreasing levels of stress therefore increasing levels of compassion satisfaction in nurses working …
Brian S. Carter Oral History.
Pediatric Palliative Care Oral History Project
Dr. Brian Carter begins the interview describing his early career journey exploring the intersectionality of bioethics and neonatology. Dr. Carter viewed some of the early practices of intensivists to "resuscitate people until they die" as exceptionally "egregious," which prompted him to feel "an obligation. . . to make inroads [to neonatal and pediatric palliative care] via the route of ethics: making better choices, trying to discern [the] right action." Dr. Carter then describes the evolution of early practices in neonatology that were visibly distressing to babies, and how the work of him and his peers around children experiencing pain began …
Cultural Aspects Of End Of Life Advance Care Planning For African Americans: An Ethnonursing Study, John Collins
Cultural Aspects Of End Of Life Advance Care Planning For African Americans: An Ethnonursing Study, John Collins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Advance directive completion rates among the general population are low. Studies report even lower completion rates among African Americans are impacted by demographic variables, cultural distinctives related to patient autonomy, mistrust of the healthcare system, low health literacy, strong spiritual beliefs, desire for aggressive interventions, importance of family-communal decision making, and presence of comorbidities. End of Life (EOL) advance care planning (ACP) promotes patient and family centered care. The purpose of this study was to identify culturally based meanings, expressions, and traditions of EOL ACP and decision making among African Americans, to better understand and provide culturally congruent nursing …

Balfour Mount Oral History.
Pediatric Palliative Care Oral History Project
Dr. Balfour Mount begins the interview by describing a pivotal moment when he heard Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross lecture at McGill University's Royal Victoria Hospital. Dr. Mount had not previously heard of Kubler-Ross's work and was impressed to learn about the unmet needs of the dying. When Dr. Mount conducted a similar study at the RVH, he found the same deficiencies in care and carried out a two year pilot project aimed at addressing these needs through the creation of an in-patient ward, a consultation service, a home care program, an outpatient clinic, and a bereavement follow-up service.

Asian Family Caregivers Caring For Patients With Terminal Cancer, Joosun Shin, Eunice Lee
Asian Family Caregivers Caring For Patients With Terminal Cancer, Joosun Shin, Eunice Lee
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Terminal cancer often advances rapidly, which makes it challenging for family caregivers to cope with end of life caregiving for their loved one. Asian family caregivers embrace unique sociocultural values, which could affect their terminal cancer caregiving. However, how the values of them affect terminal cancer caregiving isn't fully understood.
