The Arts, Recreation and Worship Conference is an experiential 6-day event focused on recreation, worship, community, creativity and the arts. It is designed for those who want to deepen their creativity, broaden their leadership skills and experience personal spiritual renewal. ARW is connected to the Presbyterian Church (USA) and welcomes pastors, educators, youth workers, church volunteers, camp and conference professionals, recreation workers of all denominations and anyone interested in the arts, recreation and worship to participate in the workshop (recreationworkshop.org). Because limited information exists about the ways in which faith based youth leaders meet their professional development needs, and a …
Leadership Matters: The Process Of Leading A Declining Church To Revitalization Utilizing Early Church Principles, Jarvis Baker
Leadership Matters: The Process Of Leading A Declining Church To Revitalization Utilizing Early Church Principles, Jarvis Baker
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A review of current literature that exist details the perpetual decline that is occurring in the local church. Nevertheless, the leadership a pastor provides must not be ignored, when there is an attempt to lead a church from decline to revitalization. The purpose of this project is to assist pastors who lead declining churches to revitalization by examining the principles of the early church, which was a church that was vibrant in the area of growth and spiritual life. Based on questionnaires sent to pastors and other ministry leaders, the project will reveal the need for a practical Biblical plan …
The Fundamental Characteristics And Unique Outcomes Of Christian Summer Camp Experiences, Jacob Sorenson
The Fundamental Characteristics And Unique Outcomes Of Christian Summer Camp Experiences, Jacob Sorenson
Journal of Youth Development
Very little research is available on the unique characteristics and outcomes of Christian summer camps, in spite of their prevalence in the industry. The Effective Camp Research Project is a mixed-methods study seeking to close the research gap. This article presents the major findings of the study, detailing the emergence of a distinct Christian camp model with 5 fundamental characteristics: relational, safe space, participatory, unplugged from home, and faith-centered. A multi-test survey of campers provides compelling evidence for outcomes that are immediate, subsequent, and lasting. Some of these outcomes are common to all camp types, though many are unique to …
Student Perceptions On The Community Of Spiritual Formation At A Faith-Based University, Jonathan R. Colburn
Student Perceptions On The Community Of Spiritual Formation At A Faith-Based University, Jonathan R. Colburn
Doctor of Education (EdD)
Spiritual formation has always been of utmost importance in Christian education as faithbased institutions strive to educate the whole person; body, mind, and spirit. Because of this, Christian universities work to create programs and provide activities that challenge the minds and hearts of the students in order to promote spiritual growth. This study seeks to answer the following question: What does a phenomenological analysis of the lived experiences of students at a Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) institution reveal about their perceptions of the spiritual formation priorities of the institution? Stated another way, what do students report about …

Who Is In The “We”? Interrogating The African Union’S Agenda 2063 And Youth Political Participation., Job Shipululo Amupanda J.S
International Journal of African Development
Most analyses of the African Union (AU) focus on the politics of the state and presidents. There are very few analyses that focus on aspects such as youth development. This article departs from that tradition. It argues that although the youth were always part of important historical developments in Africa, they have remained on the periphery. In recent times, particularly since the transformation of the Organization of African Unity into the AU in the 2000s, the youth development agenda has begun to receive attention at the policy level. In 2015, the AU through Agenda 2063 went a step further by …

Pastoral Leadership Behaviors And The Involvement Of Local Church Laity, Christine Dodson
Pastoral Leadership Behaviors And The Involvement Of Local Church Laity, Christine Dodson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This qualitative research case study explored pastoral leadership behaviors and the involvement of local church laity in local churches in the North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church (NCCUMC). The general problem addressed was the declining involvement of lay persons in local church service activities, specifically within local churches in the NCCUMC. The problem is applicable to business as previous studies describe the non-profit sector, including churches, filling gaps in social and economic programs previously being supplied by declining governmental assistance programs. The involvement of laity provides help needed to support mission and ministry programs in local churches and …

The Global Missionary: The Emerging Roles Of North American Missionaries In The Twenty-First Century, Blayne C. Waltrip
The Global Missionary: The Emerging Roles Of North American Missionaries In The Twenty-First Century, Blayne C. Waltrip
Great Commission Research Journal
This article explores the emerging roles of the North American missionary in light of the changing face of global missions. Missionary sending has become a phenomenon of reciprocity. Because the Global South has become a missionary sending force, missionaries are going from everywhere to everywhere. This shift has created a need for North American missionaries to reevaluate their roles in missions. They are increasingly becoming “Global Missionaries” that serve in more than one context. The author defines and describes a Global Missionary, evaluates the factors for the shift, and advocates a greater global partnership to fulfill the Great Commission.

CRCNA Denominational Survey Results
As part of the denominational ministry plan, Our Journey 2020, the CRCNA has contracted with Calvin College’s Social Research Center to administer a denominational survey every year. The results from the 2018 survey have now been compiled.
All CRC-affiliated adults and older youth are welcome to respond to this survey every year as they are led. In order to ensure a healthy number of responses to the survey every year, however, CRC leaders have randomly assigned every CRC church to one of five “cohorts”. Each cohort includes about 20 per cent of all active congregations, and each congregation will …

A Citation Study Of Andrews University Theological Seminary Dissertations, Cynthia Mae Helms, Bernard Helms
Journal of Adventist Libraries and Archives
Citations found in Theological Seminary Ph.D./Th.D. dissertations completed between 2006 and 2010 at Andrews University were analyzed to determine how much of the cited resources were held by the library, what types of resources were used, and their age. The study showed that 2/3 of the citations were books and almost 1/3 were periodicals, 84% of the citations were held by James White Library, and the majority of the citations were published within 60 years of the dissertations’ completion dates. The study also revealed that five of the 27 most frequently cited periodicals were included in ranked lists of three …
The Relationship Of Student Demographic And Academic Characteristics On Students' Success In High School Online Courses, Jerri Luemora Ward
The Relationship Of Student Demographic And Academic Characteristics On Students' Success In High School Online Courses, Jerri Luemora Ward
Theses and Dissertations
Over the past decades, online learning has contributed to a large percentage of educational success in higher education and K-12 learning environments. It has not only allowed a number of opportunities for students to receive education due to flexibility, reachability, but also additional course offerings and educational advancement. As K-12 online learning has continued to soar as an option for educating students, concerns relating to students’ success in these courses have arose. Due to the concerns relating to student success, researchers have sought to determine what attributes can contribute to student success in online courses offered to students in elementary …

Just Play: On Being Fully Human In Sport, Amy Gray Bird
Master of Art Theology Thesis
Bird, Amy, S.G. “Just Play: On Being Fully Human in Sport.” Master’s thesis, Concordia Seminary, 2018. 73 pp.
Is competing in competitive sport worthy of a Christian’s time, energy, and resources? If so, how does one compete in a God-pleasing way? Certainly, several factors are at work here, but to gain a theologically faithful understanding of sport this paper considers two concepts as vital: the Lutheran doctrine of vocation and the concept of leisure as articulated by Catholic moral theologian Josef Pieper. This thesis considers both vocation and leisure and explores how when taken together vocation and leisure clarify the …

How To Live While Ministering To The Dying: A Guide For Hospice Chaplains, Wayne Bruner
How To Live While Ministering To The Dying: A Guide For Hospice Chaplains, Wayne Bruner
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Burnout, turnover, and attrition are common among hospice chaplains. A guidebook to hospice chaplaincy, prepared by a veteran hospice chaplain, would articulate the specific characteristics, habits, ministry mindsets, lifestyle interests, spiritual development, and support systems that have proven effective in the lives and ministries of long-tenured hospice chaplains. Such a practical and biblical guidebook would be a welcomed tool for individuals considering hospice ministry, for novice chaplains, and for hospice organizations since it would foster chaplains’ resiliency and quality of life by showing what it means to “live” while ministering to the dying. This guidebook will review best practices in …

Understanding The Broader Horizon Of Sexual Encounter: A Case Study On Sexual Engagement Among Filipino Teens, Dalmacito A. Cordero
Understanding The Broader Horizon Of Sexual Encounter: A Case Study On Sexual Engagement Among Filipino Teens, Dalmacito A. Cordero
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
The sexual morality of Filipino teenagers is in great decline based on the many cases of unwanted pregnancy, the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD), liberality in sexual behaviors, and many other evident consequences. This is a very important concern for many families, school administrators, church authorities, and other involved institutions. With this unfortunate situation, it is easier to judge how our teens have immersed themselves in the river of sexual immorality. But the question is, do we really understand what led them to commit such an unacceptable act in this traditional Christian- dominated culture like ours? Have we scrutinized …
