Using Self-Regulated Strategy Development To Teach Middle School Writing, Julia Breen Oct 2018

Using Self-Regulated Strategy Development To Teach Middle School Writing, Julia Breen

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

Being able to write well is a skill critical to students’ success in higher education. Yet standardized test scores reveal that many students are moving into high school and college without these writing skills. Writing is a complex task; in addition to content knowledge, students must use self-regulation skills (including staying focused on the task, working through frustrations) to see success. This capstone project sought to answer the question: How can the teaching of self-regulated skills be integrated into lessons focused on developing the expository writing of middle school students? The result is a series of lesson plans that seek …

Reimagining Print Materials In A Health Science Context: Creating And Marketing A Wellness Collection, Margaret Ansell, Ariel Pomputius Sep 2018

Reimagining Print Materials In A Health Science Context: Creating And Marketing A Wellness Collection, Margaret Ansell, Ariel Pomputius

Charleston Library Conference

In the healthcare field in which out-of-date information can harm patients, the currency and immediacy of digital collections is highly valued. As a result, many health science libraries have deselected much of their print collections (Haapanen, Kultamaa, Ovaska, & Salmi, 2015; Lingle & Robinson, 2009; Tobia & Hunnicutt, 2008; Xiaoli & Kopper, 2005). However, print materials continue to be valued by health science library users for a variety of purposes (Houghton, 2017; Watson, 2016). This paper describes how one academic health science center library found a role for print materials in the context of a wellness initiative, which (1) gave …

16-03 The Effects Of High Visibility Enforcement On Driver Compliance To Pedestrian Stop Right-Of-Way Laws In Ann Arbor, Mi, Ron Van Houten, Jun-Seok Oh, De'lon Dixon

Transportation Research Center Reports

The purpose of this study was to replicate the findings of Van Houten et. al. (2013) demonstrating that a multifaceted program could increase the percentage of motorist’s yielding to pedestrians in crosswalks on a community basis in Gainesville, FL, and that these changes actually improved further over a four year follow-up period (Van Houten et. al. (2017). The current study replicated the original findings in a similar sized city in a different region of the US (Ann Arbor, MI). Stopping for pedestrians in Ann Arbor increased from a mean of 28.5% to 65.2% at the treatment sites, which also received …

Computational Thinking Unplugged: Comparing The Impact On Confidence And Competence From Analog And Digital Resources In Computer Science Professional Development For Elementary Teachers, Christopher Harris Aug 2018

Computational Thinking Unplugged: Comparing The Impact On Confidence And Competence From Analog And Digital Resources In Computer Science Professional Development For Elementary Teachers, Christopher Harris

Education Doctoral

The demand for computer science instruction is increasing across the K-12 spectrum, but in many cases elementary teachers are ill prepared to teach the subject. Based on prior research showing a preference for analog interfaces, this study compared the impact of analog and digital interface modalities on teachers’ confidence and competence gains in professional development on computational thinking conceived within the framework of cognitive acceleration. The analog group used the Robot Turtles board game and the digital group used the Scratch Jr. app on iPads while receiving the same professional development content. A single-case experimental design approach with a multiple-baseline …

Reinventing Graphic Design Software By Bridging The Gap Between Graphical User Interfaces And Programming, Nolwenn Maudet Jun 2018

Reinventing Graphic Design Software By Bridging The Gap Between Graphical User Interfaces And Programming, Nolwenn Maudet

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Graphic Design Software Applications radically transformed the practice and the industry of graphic design. However, they barely evolved since their introduction, leading designers to question their ubiquity. In this paper, we explore this mismatch by analysing digital design tools through two lenses. We first investigate digital design tools from a “lineage” perspective: how they reproduced the pre-existing design tools and practices. We then use two familiar examples: the colour picker and the alignment and distribution commands to explore the vision of design that they promote. We reveal how these tools assume that designers already have in mind a desired outcome …

An Analysis Of Public And Feminist Rhetoric For Menstrual Equity, Margaret Linscott May 2018

An Analysis Of Public And Feminist Rhetoric For Menstrual Equity, Margaret Linscott

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

In August of 2017, James Madison University installed free tampon and pad dispensers in major restrooms across its campus. This development was the result of the campaign Free the Tampon which used the themes of menstrual equity, public writing, and feminist rhetoric to achieve its outcome. Using writing and rhetoric, the campaign successfully engaged with 2000 students in passing a petition and in reaching out to key JMU decision makers. This project designs the origin, implementation, and effects of Free the Tampon on JMU’s campus and the ways in which concepts of menstrual equity informed the campaign.

College Readiness And Digital Badges: A Middle School Approach, Blake C. Nemelka May 2018

College Readiness And Digital Badges: A Middle School Approach, Blake C. Nemelka

Open Access Dissertations

Post-secondary education attainment results in higher salaries (Pew Research Center, 2014) and an increase in positive societal benefits (Baum, Ma, & Payea, 2013). Nevertheless, only 31% of U.S. citizens over the age of 25 have a bachelor’s degree (U.S. Census Bureau, 2014). While tradition would dictate the preparation for going to college begins in the later high school years (Gaertner & McClarty, 2015), a recent push has emerged for shifting the beginning of such conversations to middle school (Curry, Belser, & Binns, 2013; Gaertner & McClarty, 2015; Mattern, Allen, & Camara, 2016; Nemelka & Nemelka, 2016). Furthermore, advances in educational …

Examining Parents' Perceptions Of And Preferences Toward The Use Of Comics In The Classroom, Jordan Bischell May 2018

Examining Parents' Perceptions Of And Preferences Toward The Use Of Comics In The Classroom, Jordan Bischell

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

While many researchers openly acknowledge the educational benefits of comics, the academic use of the medium has been met with much fear and apprehension from parents, teachers, and scholars, who have been reluctant to support the inclusion of such texts in the classroom. The literature on the topic of resistance to comics, however, is mostly limited to historical perspectives from the mid-20th century and is largely silent on contemporary parental perspectives. The purpose of this study was to collect data concerning parental perceptions of the academic potential of comics, parental preferences concerning how frequently the medium should be incorporated into …

Best Practices In 21st Century Learning Environments: A Study Of Two P21 Exemplar Schools, Susan Brown

Dissertations

Purpose: The purpose of this phenomenological study is to identify and describe best practices related to 21st century skill development in two elementary schools outside of California that have been recognized as exemplary by the Partnership for 21st Century Learning (P21).

Methodology: This qualitative phenomenological study sought to investigate and understand the experiences of those associated with the phenomenon of exemplar schools, namely teachers, staff and parents in these elite elementary schools, as the elementary level sets the foundation for 21st century learning. Two schools were selected for the study based on the criteria that they had …

The Educated Eye: Visual Culture And Pedagogy In The Life Sciences, Nancy Anderson, Michael R. Dietrich Jan 2018

The Educated Eye: Visual Culture And Pedagogy In The Life Sciences, Nancy Anderson, Michael R. Dietrich

Dartmouth College Press

About the Book

(from upne.com) The creation and processing of visual representations in the life sciences is a critical but often overlooked aspect of scientific pedagogy. The Educated Eye follows the nineteenth-century embrace of the visible in new spectatoria, or demonstration halls, through the twentieth-century cinematic explorations of microscopic realms and simulations of surgery in virtual reality. With essays on Doc Edgerton's stroboscopic techniques that froze time and Eames's visualization of scale in Powers of Ten, among others, contributors ask how we are taught to see the unseen.

Reverse Engineering The First Humanities Computing Center, Steven E. Jones Jan 2018

Reverse Engineering The First Humanities Computing Center, Steven E. Jones

English Faculty Publications

The Jesuit scholar, Roberto Busa, is often called the founder of humanities computing. In fact, starting as early as 1949, he collaborated with IBM to perform experiments using suites of punched-card machines. These punched-card data systems—with their plug-board setups, clacking machinery, and flurries of perforated rectangular cards—were developed for business accounting and tabulating, and adapted for government censuses, defense calculations, archival management, and information processing of all kinds. The first decade of humanities computing can more accurately be described as an era of humanities data processing—in the historically specific and contextually rich sense of the term. This essay describes an …

A Bridge Between Copyright And Patent Law: Towards A Modern-Day Reapplication Of The Semiconductor Chip Protection Act, Timothy T. Hsieh Jan 2018

A Bridge Between Copyright And Patent Law: Towards A Modern-Day Reapplication Of The Semiconductor Chip Protection Act, Timothy T. Hsieh

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

This Paper analyzes the history of the Semiconductor Chip Protection Act (SCPA), 17 U.S.C. §§ 901–914, and asks why the statute is so seldom used in intellectual property litigation. Afterwards, this Paper makes the argument that the SCPA should be used more in intellectual property litigation, perhaps in tandem with patent litigation, and can be a viable form of protection for semiconductor micro-fabrication companies or integrated circuit design companies engaged in pioneering innovations within the cutting-edge field of semiconductor technology.

The Ontological Foundations Of Digital Art, RóIsíN Lally Jan 2018

The Ontological Foundations Of Digital Art, RóIsíN Lally

Leadership Studies Faculty Scholarship

In recent decades, the internet has become our predominant public space and yet the role of art in this space remains largely unthought. This paper argues that graphic art, and in particular digital graphic art, has great power to shape and transform our thinking and experience. But with that power comes an enormous political and ethical responsibility, a responsibility too often ignored by programmers and computer scientists. This paper uses the work of Denis Schmidt and Jacques Taminiaux as important resources for developing a Heideggerian response to this lack.

To Be Decided An Animated Graphic Novel, Madison T. Hackett Jan 2018

To Be Decided An Animated Graphic Novel, Madison T. Hackett

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

To Be Decided begins where most stories end, with the death of a young man named Zander. The story follows his journey into the afterlife where he meets a goddess of death, a young girl who is more than she seems and some other colorful characters along the way. The story addresses ideas of grief, what it means to be alive and what comes after. Heavy moments in the story are broken up by lighthearted comedy and moments of friendship between characters. The main character of the story Zander must decide if he wishes to rest peacefully after his sudden …
