Following Epidural Pca Use, Do Obstetric Patients Feel Satisfied With Their Pain Control, James Mcrae
Following Epidural Pca Use, Do Obstetric Patients Feel Satisfied With Their Pain Control, James Mcrae
Doctoral Projects
ABSTRACT
Pain is a source of anxiety for many patients, and uncontrolled pain can have deleterious effects on patient outcomes (Patak et al., 2014). Pain associated with labor is a particular concern of obstetric patients. Epidural analgesia is currently the frontline treatment for pain associated with labor, with epidural patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) often being utilized (Braveman, Scavone, Blessing, & Wong, 2013). Little evidence exists that details what factors of epidural PCA that patients considered important (Patak et al., 2014). In this project, a randomized questionnaire was administered to obstetric patients to assess satisfaction levels with their epidural PCA. The questionnaire …
How Do Communication Modalities Influence Intergenerational Communication?, April Pierce, Candace Payne
How Do Communication Modalities Influence Intergenerational Communication?, April Pierce, Candace Payne
Concordia Journal of Communication Research
This cross-sectional study analyzes the rapidly developing landscape of online communications. In particular, it studies the modalities used by three generations, which include baby boomers, Gen X, and Gen Y/millennials. In addition to analyzing their preferred methods, researchers also studied the conflicting views on other generations. This was done through data collected from an online survey administered via email and social media posts. It was hypothesized that the gaps in communication styles between different generations would be significantly different than the other generations mentioned. Researchers found that while generational differences are still present among the three demographics studied, a significant …
Effects Of Teacher Degree And Teacher Experience On Literacy Achievement For Students Grades 3-6 In Arkansas, James Clay Hendrix
Effects Of Teacher Degree And Teacher Experience On Literacy Achievement For Students Grades 3-6 In Arkansas, James Clay Hendrix
College of Education Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the effects of teacher degree and teacher experience on student achievement in literacy for Grades 3-6. School leaders are under pressure from state and national legislation to improve student achievement continuously. At the times hiring and teaching assignment decisions are made, often there is little verifiable data available about individual teacher applicants. Throughout most of the history of public education, teacher degree and teacher experience have been thought to have an impact on school quality and student achievement, so much so that nearly all teacher pay models are based on those two …

Imperfect Produce Pricing: Relationships Between Price Percent Discount And Demographic Traits Of Customers, April Foster
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This research sought to understand the impact of price reductions on consumer spending behaviors related to the purchase of imperfect produce. Additionally, the correlation between consumers’ demographics and their willingness to purchase imperfect produce at various price points was evaluated. The data was viewed with mindfulness toward reducing food loss as a function of the world food crisis. More specifically, the purpose of this study was to describe the relationship between Washington County, Arkansas consumers’ demographic traits and the percent discount at which they are willing to alter their behavior to purchase specific imperfect produce items. Using the Theory of …
Taking Stock Of Librarianship: Representations In Stock Photography, Robert Perret
Taking Stock Of Librarianship: Representations In Stock Photography, Robert Perret
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This paper explores the representation of librarians within two popular types of online imagery: stock photographs and memes. While the representation of librarians in popular media has been explored before, these particular media have not and are distinct in that they are often created by amateurs with little professional editorial mediation. This study builds upon Seale’s librarian archetypes and Attebury’s revisions in order to compare these new medias to traditional depictions of the profession. It is found that the image of an Old Maid librarian is waning and librarians are generally presented in a positive light. Some traditional markers yet …

Factors Influencing Recruitment And Appearance Of Bull Kelp, Nereocystis Luetkeana (Phylum Ochrophyta), Katie Dobkowski, K. Darby Flanagan, Jessica R. Nordstrom
All Faculty Scholarship
The dynamics of annual species are strongly tied to their capacity for recruitment each year. We examined how competition and propagule availability influence recruitment and appearance and tracked survivorship of an annual species of marine macroalgae, the bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana), which serves as major biogenic habitat in the Salish Sea of Washington State. We hypothesized that 1) juvenile N. luetkeana would exhibit a seasonal appearance as a cohort in the spring and 2) competition for space would be more limiting than propagules (spores) to recruitment at sites adjacent to established N. luetkeana beds. We tagged N. luetkeana …

Demographic Study On 4,038 Sexual Assault Victims: Identifying Vulnerabilities And Vulnerable Populations With Extralegal Variables, Michael Atkerson Worthington
Demographic Study On 4,038 Sexual Assault Victims: Identifying Vulnerabilities And Vulnerable Populations With Extralegal Variables, Michael Atkerson Worthington
Theses and Dissertations
Sexual assault (SA) is an ongoing concern in the United States (US). With a rate above the national average, SA is especially a concern in the Western state in which this study was conducted. Identifying victim vulnerabilities related to SA is an area of research that is currently limited. In this retrospective study, data on victim vulnerabilities were collected from 4,038 standardized SA forensic medical examination forms. Descriptive statistical analyses were conducted to identify vulnerabilities and Pearson's chi-square tests of association were conducted to explore the relationships between extralegal variables. The extralegal variables represent data not contained within the scope …

Demonstrating disease impacts on the vital rates of free‐ranging mammalian hosts typically requires intensive, long‐term study. Evidence for chronic pathogens affecting reproduction but not survival is rare, but has the potential for wide‐ranging effects. Accurately quantifying disease‐associated reductions in fecundity is important for advancing theory, generating accurate predictive models, and achieving effective management. We investigated the impacts of brucellosis (Brucella abortus) on elk (Cervus canadensis) productivity using serological data from over 6,000 captures since 1990 in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, USA. Over 1,000 of these records included known age and pregnancy status. Using Bayesian multilevel models, …

Historical ecological research provides valuable insights for contemporary conservation management. Gaps in historical records, however, can limit the utility of that research. Future conservationists may therefore find themselves disadvantaged by the current societal trend of underinvestment in systematic collection of museum specimens and natural history information. To reduce that risk, we asked what managers and scientists could do today to better document the past and present conditions of Santa Cruz Island, California, as a means to improve both contemporary and future conservation. We focused our inquiry on the island’s terrestrial fauna, which includes numerous taxa of conservation concern. Here we …

Academic Librarians And Labor Unions: Attitudes And Experiences, Ian Mccullough
Academic Librarians And Labor Unions: Attitudes And Experiences, Ian Mccullough
Research, Publications, and Presentations
This research project investigates librarians’ attitudes toward unions and collective bargaining through data collected from a nationwide survey of 359 academic librarians in the United States. We found that academic librarians have a generally positive view of unions and collective bargaining agreements, a notable result in a national political atmosphere that is demonstrably anti-union. Union membership is strongly bound to faculty status. Our research results imply that unionization and collective bargaining provide stronger job protections and higher wages than faculty status alone, and suggest that discussions of faculty status in academic libraries may not have provided best possible way to …

Review Of Patients With 50-69% Internal Carotid Artery Stenosis Over A 3 Year Period, Nina Murray
Review Of Patients With 50-69% Internal Carotid Artery Stenosis Over A 3 Year Period, Nina Murray
Masters
Purpose: Carotid artery stenosis (CAS) is defined as the presence of significant narrowing of the arteries of the extracranial carotid system due to the presence of atherosclerotic plaque and affects up to 10% of people over 65 years (Goessens et al 2007). Management of 50-69% stenosis is centred on medical optimisation and risk factor modification. Surgical intervention is typically reserved for patients with stenosis of > 70%. The primary aim of the study is to determine if asymptomatic carotid artery disease causing a 50-69% internal carotid artery stenosis (ICAS) typically progressed to a >70% stenosis, thereby evaluating the necessity of …
Stereotype Threat As An Explanation For Sexual Risk Taking Behavior In Gay Men: A Multi-Study Exploration Of Mechanisms, Inna Saboshchuk
Stereotype Threat As An Explanation For Sexual Risk Taking Behavior In Gay Men: A Multi-Study Exploration Of Mechanisms, Inna Saboshchuk
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Stereotype threat is a hindrance in performance that occurs when an individual’s awareness of negative stereotypes associated with his/her group results in inadvertent conforming to that stereotype. Stereotype threat research has been conducted on myriad group and domain identifications but gay men are strikingly absent from the stereotype threat literature. One of the most prevalent stereotypes about gay men indicates they are sexually promiscuous and that this promiscuity is linked to HIV infection. In a series of three research projects, a theoretical model proposing stereotype threat as a mechanism for sexual risk taking behavior in gay men is tested. In …
Preventing Extinction Of At-Risk Plant Species In A Complex World, Holly Lee Bernardo
Preventing Extinction Of At-Risk Plant Species In A Complex World, Holly Lee Bernardo
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Earthճ current biodiversity crisis is now considered a true mass extinction event, with species level extinction rates well above background rates and population level extinction rates orders of magnitude more common that species extinctions. There are many threats driving this loss of biodiversity. How each threat impacts the viability of a species is highly context dependent, but all are anthropogenic in origin and so as the human population continues to increase, so too will the pressure of these threats on our natural systems. Ultimately, how much a threat decreases the viability of a species depends on how that threat influences …
Conservation Applications Of Watershed-Level Brook Trout Riverscape Genetics, Lucas Nathan
Conservation Applications Of Watershed-Level Brook Trout Riverscape Genetics, Lucas Nathan
Doctoral Dissertations
Contemporary Brook Trout Salvelinus fontinalis populations are often fragmented due to anthropogenic influences. Although research and conservation actions have traditionally focused at the stream-reach level, inter-stream movements may connect seemingly isolated populations to form larger metapopulations. The overall goal of my research was to use watershed-level riverscape genetics to inform Brook Trout conservation. Specifically, my objectives were to 1) present a synthesis of existing Brook Trout literature and identify future research directions, 2) evaluate Brook Trout genetic population structuring and identify gene flow barriers at the watershed level, 3) validate and modify a pre-existing Brook Trout habitat patch spatial layer …

Exploring Clinically Useful Definitions Of Treatment Success For Individuals With Alcohol Use Disorder, Megan Kirouac
Exploring Clinically Useful Definitions Of Treatment Success For Individuals With Alcohol Use Disorder, Megan Kirouac
Psychology ETDs
Given the widespread costs associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD; World Health Organization, 2011), it is unsurprising that many treatments exist for AUD. Moreover, many treatments have been rigorously studied via experimental research designs. In such research, treatment success has been defined predominantly as abstinence from alcohol or, more recently, no heavy drinking days. Consumption-based definitions of treatment success, rather than alternative non-consumption based definitions, have dominated in the field for at least two reasons. First, there are multiple measures of similar non-consumption constructs (e.g., quality of life, psychosocial functioning), and very little research has been conducted to direct researchers …

Enrollment forecasts were prepared under high, middle, and low scenarios for the District. Forecasts for attendance areas by place of residence and for individual schools are consistent with the middle district‐wide forecast.
An Assessment Of The Factors That Increase The Likeliness Of Hispanic Students To Attend Higher Education In Northeast Tennessee, Denise Chavez Reyes
An Assessment Of The Factors That Increase The Likeliness Of Hispanic Students To Attend Higher Education In Northeast Tennessee, Denise Chavez Reyes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
From 2000 to 2014 the number of Hispanics grew 230%, representing an 8.6% of the national's youth (Tennessee Higher Education Commission, 2016). Although the population is growing, the educational attainment does not reflect this growth. This research tries to identify what factors influence individuals' decision to pursue higher education in rural Tennessee. Intrinsic (grit, hardiness, and motivation to lead) and extrinsic factors (Status in the U.S., caregivers’ education, involvement in high school and others) were explored. Sixty-six complete responses were submitted to our online survey. Hypothesis testing with Pearson chi-square, difference of means (ANOVA and two sample t-test), and correlational …

A Culture Of Memorialization: Examining Public Grief Through Funeral Programs, Bethany R. Rykhus
A Culture Of Memorialization: Examining Public Grief Through Funeral Programs, Bethany R. Rykhus
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Grief can be expressed in a vast number of ways, each unique to the person experiencing it. But are there wider trends in the manner in which this grief is displayed publicly? This research examines a collection of Christian funeral programs in Blue Earth County spanning the 1960s to the 2010s. By examining the linguistic and symbolic features of these programs, commonalities in the imagery, bible verses, poetry, or other tributes to the deceased are identified and analyzed across several factors including specific genders, ages, and time periods. This examination reflects a larger culture of memorialization amongst local Christian mourners …

An Experimental Study On The Impact Of Informal Rape Myth Education To Alter Rape Myth Acceptance Scores In A Non-Student Sample, Leah Noelle Reddy
Dissertations and Theses
Sexual assault has come to the forefront in terms of prevention and education for many social institutions such as college campuses. However, with a growing body of research highlighting the importance and effectiveness of interventions, research examining the impact of rape-related education on altering rape myth acceptance (RMA) among non-student populations is severely lacking. This is a problematic gap given the issue of sexual assault in the United States extends well beyond academia. The current study aimed to fill this gap by employing an experimental design with repeated measures. To detect changes in RMA after a short rape myth education …

Practice. Practice. Practice. Do Homework Management Systems Work?, Kathy K. Archer, Mark Olson
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Practice is an essential component in learning any new skill. For learning the quantitative disciplines at the university level, web-based homework management systems provide the means for extensive practice with immediate feedback, which research suggests should lead to increased student learning (Palocsay & Stevens, 2008; Titard, DeFranceschi, & Knight, 2014). Do web-based homework management systems improve student learning, as measured by exam scores, for adult learners in an online course? Does the use of simple Microsoft Excel-based homework templates relate to improved student exam scores? This natural experiment divided a sample of 2431 online students in an entry level university …
