Taiko: Its Past And Present In Japanese Society, Nathan Mueller, Eric Desormeaux, Dallas Ferrell, Alexander Kallweit, Tyler Henderson, Brandon Lau
Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado
The significance of Taiko in Japanese culture is far beyond being a percussion instrument. “Taiko” also refers to the art of drumming and is claimed to represent the spirit of Japanese people. Since ancient times, Taiko was used in the battlefield, Shinto and Buddhist religious ceremonies, festivals, royal courts, and theatrical arts performance. However, the origin of the Taiko remains unclear as well as its connection with Korean drum. The sacred power of Taiko for Japanese people is difficult to clarify in modern context. Japan is moving toward modernization, while promoting the importance of cultural preservation. It is important to …
Individual Thought Patterns: Women In New York's Extreme Metal Music Scene, Joan M. Jocson-Singh
Individual Thought Patterns: Women In New York's Extreme Metal Music Scene, Joan M. Jocson-Singh
Theses and Dissertations
Extreme metal music (EMM) is both an umbrella term and a sub-category of heavy metal. Although women have a small but steady presence in heavy metal, this number shrinks when applied to the EMM scene. Using ethnographic research, participant-observation and interviews, this study surveys women in New York's EMM scene to address participation, gender performativity and feminist musicology.
Embodying Decolonization In A Settler Faith Community: The Living Justly In This Land Curriculum, John R. Henry
Embodying Decolonization In A Settler Faith Community: The Living Justly In This Land Curriculum, John R. Henry
Education
The curriculum project Living Justly in this Land seeks to spark a conversation among primarily non-Indigenous adults who live in a country with a history of settler colonialism. This curriculum is based on theories from the place-based education model of Land education, which has been created primarily by Indigenous scholars. Inspired by teaching styles used by many different Indigenous peoples, as well as the research method of Participatory Action Research, this living curriculum was co-created during the process of the project. I authored the basic structure of the lessons, but allowed the participants, from a majority white settler faith community, …
Afro-Caribbean Stylistic Elements As Topics In The Music Of Silvestre Revueltas: Conveying A Political Discourse In Caminando, No Sé Por Qué Piensas Tú, And Sensemayá, Elsy M. Gallardo-Diaz
Afro-Caribbean Stylistic Elements As Topics In The Music Of Silvestre Revueltas: Conveying A Political Discourse In Caminando, No Sé Por Qué Piensas Tú, And Sensemayá, Elsy M. Gallardo-Diaz
Dissertations, 2014-2019
Although the music of Silvestre Revueltas has often been categorized as merely Mexicanist, this paper aims to demonstrate that not all of his music falls squarely within that classification. Among his brief but significant artistic output, three pieces for voice and small instrumental ensemble incorporate Afro-Caribbean stylistic elements drawn from popular and religious Afro-Cuban music. Composed in early 1937, Caminando, No sé que piensas tú soldado, and Sensemayá were based on poems by the Cuban Nicolás Guillén, the foremost representative of Afrocubanismo and, like Revueltas, an ardent believer in art as a tool for political protest and for …
Recent Semantic Changes For The Term "Digital", Tore Brattli
Recent Semantic Changes For The Term "Digital", Tore Brattli
Proceedings from the Document Academy
The term digital originates from the Latin word for finger/counting and has for many years been used to denote discrete signals and information, as opposed to analog. Discrete representation is an important principle, not only in computers, but also for (printed) text, music scores and even our genes. Recently however, the use of the term has increased and the meaning expanded to include almost everything related to information technology, e.g. digital natives and digital addiction. This study investigates the core principles of digital representation and compares this concept with the recent usage, with a focus on Norwegian media. The purpose …

Beyond Regietheater: The Oper Frankfurt Behind The Curtain, 1979 - 2015, Cordelia Elizabeth Chenault
Beyond Regietheater: The Oper Frankfurt Behind The Curtain, 1979 - 2015, Cordelia Elizabeth Chenault
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation focuses on the Oper Frankfurt, a musical institution that has played an influential role in the development of operatic staging since the 1980s. Through an examination of productions staged at the house in two different periods (1979 – 1987 and 2010 – 2015), I pay particular attention to the ways in which these contemporary stagings contribute to a discourse about recent opera— particularly in Germany— and what has frequently been called Regietheater. This polemical term, often translated as “director’s theater,†connotes a provocative, theatrically experimental, even massively reenvisioned reading of an operatic work, propelled by a visionary stage …

Creolisation In Music Traditions: South Connemara, The Scottish Western Isles And Francophone Louisiana, Brian Ó Huiginn
Creolisation In Music Traditions: South Connemara, The Scottish Western Isles And Francophone Louisiana, Brian Ó Huiginn
Doctoral
Why do people mix musics? What causes them to break down the boundaries between music genres and produce new genres that are a mix of others, and what does a melody migrating between cultures have to do to conform to a new music culture? Researchers such as Bruno Nettl, John Blacking, George List and Mark Slobin have over the past eighty years or more, attempted to look at the issue of music mixing under the headings of diffusion, acculturation and globalisation. This thesis seeks to further the understanding of this phenomenon, by examining three cases of cultures that are known …
James Tissot's And Emile Zola's Shopgirl:The Working Girl As La Parisienne, Elizabeth Pusey
James Tissot's And Emile Zola's Shopgirl:The Working Girl As La Parisienne, Elizabeth Pusey
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis argues for the cultural space of late nineteenth-century Parisian shopgirls as a position of power. The shopgirls' role in society is an ambiguous position connecting fashion consumer culture, class divides, gender and identity perceptions, and the workspace. Using James Tissot's Femme à Paris series, specifically the image Demoiselles de Magasin, and Emile Zola's novel Au Bonheur des Dames as primary sources, I examine the role of the shopgirl as a liminal position within the definition of the iconic 'La Parisienne' woman. By looking at women's work and the role of shopgirls in the boutique and department store …

Interfaith-Cross-Cultural Improvisation: Music And Meaning Across Boundaries Of Faith And Culture, Gerard J. Yun
Interfaith-Cross-Cultural Improvisation: Music And Meaning Across Boundaries Of Faith And Culture, Gerard J. Yun
Consensus
This article explores the social value and meaning of interfaith-cross-cultural improvisation (musical improvisation between people from differing cultural and faith traditions) and its unique quality of engaging widely different cultural and faith-based groups. It draws concepts from evolutionary biology, ethnomusicology, religious experience, the emerging field of community music, and the insight of first-hand participants. Interfaith-cross-cultural improvisation can be seen as a form of “deep play” with the ability to signal and evoke empathy across participants who identify with divergent beliefs, cultures, and practices. The article attempts to illuminate the process of interfaith-cross-cultural improvisation as a meaningful undertaking of interfaith and …

"Mr. Furry's Blues": The Life, Music, And Legacy Of Furry Lewis, Jamison Tyler Fritts
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation provides in-depth critical analysis of Memphis blues musician Furry Lewis's (1899-1981) life, music, and legacy. I rely on archival research, ethnographic fieldwork, and musical and technical analysis to answer a few key questions: 1) Who was Furry Lewis?; 2) Why does his music sound the way it does?; and 3) What impact does he have on current Memphis musicians? Drawing on Henry Lewis Gates, Jr.'s literary critique of the African and Afro-Diasporic legend of Esu-Elegbara, I explore the relationship between Lewis's known biography and the complex web of myths that surround him. I then examine the ways in …

Electronic Dance Music Culture’S Communication Transition Through Social Media In North America, Eden Shurman
DHI Digital Projects Showcase
The project aims to link the past modes of communication utilized by participants in electronic dance music (EDM) club cultures and subcultures, to the current practice of using various social media platforms as a means of information conveyance about musicians, producers, DJs, events, and industry-related news. It will attempt to determine to what degree social media platforms influence electronic dance music culture, the positive and negative effects social media has on the culture, and whether the transition to digital communication modes is absolute. Finally, it will pose the question as to whether any further research on social media usage among …

Some Notes On The "Pantun" Storytelling Of The Baduy Minority Group Its Written And Audiovisual Documentation, Wim Van Zanten
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Baduy pantun stories are part of the larger Sundanese oral tradition of pantun storytelling in west Java. The stories recount the deeds of the nobility of such old Sundanese kingdoms as Pajajaran and Galuh. Although the Baduy still recite the pantun stories in their rituals, in the larger cities to the east of the Baduy village Kan k s pantun recitation almost disappeared. On the basis of short periods of fieldwork in and around Kan k s village between 1976 and 2014, in this essay I shall discuss Baduy pantun storytelling. I shall summarize earlier major publications and analyse some …
Manolete Mora. Myth, Mimesis And Magic In The Music Of The T’Boli, Philippines. Quezon City: Ateneo De Manila University Press, 2005. 233 Pages., Arwin Tan
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
Excerpt: The T’boli of Southwestern Mindanao have a multilevel musical system that links their understanding of their earthly environment and the larger cosmic sphere, within which the spirits are believed to reside. In this book, Manolete Mora investigates the part that myth (the participation of the supernatural in the lives of humans) and magic (perceptions and assumptions about the constitution of the world) play in the T’boli people’s comprehension of their world. Mora emphasizes their mimetic musical practices that are deeply connected to their spiritual lives (2).
