Interprofessional Collaboration With Aphasic Patients: A Survey Based Study On Implementation And Benefits, Emily Foster, Alexa Wagner Dec 2016

Interprofessional Collaboration With Aphasic Patients: A Survey Based Study On Implementation And Benefits, Emily Foster, Alexa Wagner

Graduate Independent Studies - Communication Sciences and Disorders

Interprofessional practice (IPP), collaboration of professionals from different backgrounds working together to provide services, is of growing importance in speech-language pathology and across other disciplines in the vast health field (WHO, 2010). The American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) stresses the importance of communicating roles and responsibilities of health professionals to provide the best quality care for patients (Dixon & Oandasan, 2015). In order to understand the roles and responsibilities across disciplines, health care professionals and students need to be provided with the necessary education. Currently, an initiative for interprofessional competency is being constructed to provide more involved education for …

Understanding The Integration Of Foreign-Educated Cuban Physicians Into The U.S. Medical Field, Wendy Jordana Moore

Open Access Theses

In the U.S., immigrants and refugees are often unable to continue their profession after arrival. This paper describes a qualitative study of Cuban foreign-educated physicians (FEPs) who have attempted to integrate into the U.S. medical field. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with Cuban FEPs who varied in age, gender, job, marital status, and amount of time in U.S. Participants were recruited via snowball sampling and thematic analysis was utilized to identify various pathways. Findings describe the importance of professional identity and how it influences participants’ transcultural process as well as their journey to find a “match” within the U.S. medical field. …

Implementing Vocational Training At Escuela Quiteña De Estudios Bíblicos, Joshua K. Marcum

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

This DMin project addressed the problem of the absence of a viable training model to equip graduates of EQEB (Escuela Quiteña de Estudios Biblicos) for self-sustaining ministry. Based upon a theology of vocation, the project implemented and evaluated the inclusion of a technical-skills component to EQEB’s current seminary training. The project followed the integration of sixteen EQEB students in the vocational program implemented during the 2015-2016 school year. Qualitative research data gathered from five group interviews with these students, my own field notes, and a faculty interview provided the substance upon which I based the project´s findings. Over a seven-month …

"Come Now Let Us Reason Together": Restoring Religious Freedom In America And Abroad, John Witte Jr, Joel A. Nichols

Notre Dame Law Review

American religious freedom used to be “taken for granted.” It’s now “up

for grabs.” So writes distinguished religious liberty scholar Paul Horwitz.

Until a generation ago, the opposite was true.

So matters stood a generation ago. But in the ensuing years, these special

legislative protections of religious freedom have come under increasing

attack.

An Examination Of Cultural Competence Training In Us Medical Education Guided By The Tool For Assessing Cultural Competence Training, Valarie Blue Bird Jernigan

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

In the United States, medical students must demonstrate a standard level of “cultural competence,” upon graduation. Cultural competence is most often defined as a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in systems, organizations, and among professionals to enable effective work in cross-cultural situations. The Association of American Medical Colleges developed the Tool for Assessing Cultural Competence Training (TACCT) to assist schools in developing and evaluating cultural competence curricula to meet these requirements. This review uses the TACCT as a guideline to describe and assess pedagogical approaches to cultural competence training in US medical education and identify …

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

On her first day of class in the Hunt School of Nursing at Gardner-Webb University, Kimberly White (’17) of Shelby, N.C., strained to hear what her instructor was saying. As she wondered what to do, the instructor came to a section in the syllabus that described how the Noel Center provides assistance to students with disabilities. “I had a hearing deficit due to Meniere’s disease and I wear hearing aids, but I didn’t see myself as having a disability,” White explained.

Sustainable Global Medical Mission Work: The Csb/Sju Global Medical Brigade, Tyler J. Bruinsma Sep 2016

Sustainable Global Medical Mission Work: The Csb/Sju Global Medical Brigade, Tyler J. Bruinsma

Forum Lectures

International medical mission work, especially programs that include undergraduate students are under increasing fire as an unsustainable method for providing care to marginalized populations in developing countries. Medical mission work is often short-sighted and neglects to address the underlying causes of diseases. Annually, the CSB/SJU Global Health Affairs Club plans and executes a "Global Medical Brigade" to Honduras in conjunction with Global Brigades, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Global Brigades is different than most medical mission organizations in that it follows a holistic model to address health concerns. Through seven separate "brigades," Global Brigades addresses both immediate health concerns and their …

Addressing The Needs Of Direct Care Staff When Affected By Natural Disasters Globally, Lynn M. Hood, Marie O. Etienne, Patricia R. Messmer, Nahomie Mirville, Marjorie Lozama, Guerna Blot, Amina Dubuisson

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Friday, July 22, 2016:

Background: A competent workforce committed to providing patient-centered care is vital since retention and turnover rates of direct care staff in skilled nursing facilities are directly related to quality of patient care (Austrom et al, 2015). Turnover and retention rates can become extremely challenged when a workforce is in crisis. Following the 2010 devastating earthquake in Haiti, 31 skilled nursing facilities in Florida and Georgia actively engaged in providing support to Haitian employees and their families both in USA and Haiti. Administrators, leaders and line staff participated in the support and relief efforts …
