Population And Trophic Dynamics Of Striped Bass And Blueback Herring In The Connecticut River, Justin P. Davis Dec 2016

Population And Trophic Dynamics Of Striped Bass And Blueback Herring In The Connecticut River, Justin P. Davis

Doctoral Dissertations

Case studies of the ramifications of predator management for prey population dynamics can play a valuable role in developing ecosystem fisheries management. My dissertation focuses on the predator-prey interaction between Striped Bass (Morone saxatilis), an abundant predatory finfish, and an imperiled prey population of anadromous Blueback Herring (Alosa aestivalis). Annual returns of Blueback Herring to the Holyoke Dam on the Connecticut River in southern New England collapsed during the 1980-2000s, coincident with Striped Bass recovery. I studied the abundance and demography of both species in the Connecticut River during 2005-08, measured predation levels, and surveyed the …

A Valid Analysis Of A Small Subsample: The Case Of Non-Citizen Registration And Voting, Jesse Richman, David C. Earnest, Gulshan Chattha

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

The development of large sample surveys creates new opportunities for analysis of subpopulations that would hitherto have been impossible to examine systematically. But it also raises key challenges. Low level measurement error can potentially lead to substantial biases in estimates drawn from small subsamples. This study details strategies researchers may take to make inferences in the context of this subsample-response-error problem. In the non-citizen voting case, which recently has received substantial attention, we show that attention to any of these strategies -- group-specific response error estimates, correlated higher-frequency events, test-retest validity, or analysis of associated hypotheses – produces significant evidence …

Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the ability of standardized test scores to predict the performance of students in first-year mathematics courses, and the extent to which these tests displayed differential validity among various subgroups. Using discriminant analysis, it was established that the following percentages of students were correctly classified into passing and not passing groups, using the listed independent variables: a) SAT mathematics scores - 58.6%, b) SAT verbal scores - 50.6%, c) ACT mathematics scores - 54.7%, and d) ACT verbal scores - 56.3%. New predictive models were created using standardized test scores in combination …

A Medical Decision Model For Tinnitus Treatment Assessment, Hong Don Ihn Dec 2016

A Medical Decision Model For Tinnitus Treatment Assessment, Hong Don Ihn

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Tinnitus means objective somatosounds, and subjective auditory or sensorineural perception of noise without external physical sounds. There are several tinnitus treatments, but it is difficult to ascertain how otorhinolaryngologists rank the alternatives of treatments due to the insufficiency of available evidence and standards. A hierarchical decision model (HDM), a popular multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) method, can help to implement a comprehensive assessment of tinnitus treatments and rational decision-making to select the appropriate tinnitus treatments. The HDM considers a holistic approach using multiple dimensions, criteria and expert judgments to acquire the relative ranking of candidate tinnitus treatments. The four dimensions selected …

Higher Education Perspectives: The Role Magic The Gathering Plays In Whole-Person, Academic, And Career Development, Bob Ellsworth Lynch Dec 2016

Higher Education Perspectives: The Role Magic The Gathering Plays In Whole-Person, Academic, And Career Development, Bob Ellsworth Lynch

Dissertations

Games contribute to the whole-person, academic, and career development of collegeaged individuals (Alderman, 2015). However, many higher-education institutions do not sponsor gaming as a collegiate extracurricular activity, thereby possibly eliminating the opportunity of an all-inclusive environment (Alderman, 2015). To elucidate the problem, Astin and Antonio’s (2012) I-E-O model was engaged as conceptual framework for college-aged individuals’ perception of Magic the Gathering’s role in their whole-person, academic, and career development. The purpose of the study was to employ Magic the Gathering as the input; higher-education institutions as the environment; and wholeperson, academic, and career development as the outcome. Descriptive survey data …

Effects Of Intelligent Computer-Generated Interactive Mathematics Programs On Students’ Achievement And Affective Domain, Holly Marie Wendel

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship each of the mathematics web-based programs, MyMathLab and Assessments and Learning in Knowledge Spaces (ALEKS), has with students’ mathematics achievement. In addition, the study examined the relationship between students’ affective domain and the type of program as well as student achievement. The affective domain measures were students’ anxiety, self-efficacy as well as their attitudes towards mathematics. The study used a quasi-experimental nonrandomized pretest-posttest control group during the spring 2016 semester. The data were collected using several different instruments including: (a) a questionnaire, (b) a test of prerequisite skills, and (c) …

© 2016 by the Ecological Society of America. Understanding the influence of environmental variability on population dynamics is a fundamental goal of ecology. Theory suggests that, for populations in variable environments, temporal correlations between demographic vital rates (e.g., growth, survival, reproduction) can increase (if positive) or decrease (if negative) the variability of year-to-year population growth. Because this variability generally decreases long-term population viability, vital rate correlations may importantly affect population dynamics in stochastic environments. Despite long-standing theoretical interest, it is unclear whether vital rate correlations are common in nature, whether their directions are predominantly negative or positive, and whether they …

Agents Of Diversity And Social Justice: Librarians And Scholarly Communication, Charlotte Roh, Harrison Inefuku Oct 2016

Agents Of Diversity And Social Justice: Librarians And Scholarly Communication, Charlotte Roh, Harrison Inefuku

Gleeson Library Faculty and Staff Research and Scholarship

This chapter considers diversity broadly to mean a variety of perspectives, whether grounded in race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, socioeconomic status, or disciplinary study. It begins with a description of the current environment of scholarly communication, looking at the demographics and state of affairs in academia, publishing, and librarianship, including how biases present in all three fields affect scholarly communication. It then moves to a consideration of how librarians and library publishing programs can transform scholarly communication. By adopting a social justice perspective--actively working against ignorance and indifference to reduce systematic biases and injustice in academia, publishing, and librarianship- academic …

A Review Of Climate Change Induced Effects On Avian Prey Species And Their Consequences For Arctic Fox Populations Of Western Iceland, Mikala Jordan Oct 2016

A Review Of Climate Change Induced Effects On Avian Prey Species And Their Consequences For Arctic Fox Populations Of Western Iceland, Mikala Jordan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Island arctic fox populations are considered to carry the future wellbeing of the global population. Iceland has an island population with two arctic fox eco-types: western/coastal and eastern/inland. The western fox population is protected by the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve; no such protection exists for the eastern fox population. Food sources in both regions differ from each other and vary from summer to winter, but reliable and ample winter time food sources are the most critical for fox population’s survival. A literature review on arctic foxes and their prey species in the face of climate change is important for understanding possible …

Latino Men In Two-Year Public Colleges: State-Level Enrollment Changes And Equity Trends Over The Last Decade, Deryl K. Hatch, Crystal E. Garcia, Victor B. Sáenz Oct 2016

Latino Men In Two-Year Public Colleges: State-Level Enrollment Changes And Equity Trends Over The Last Decade, Deryl K. Hatch, Crystal E. Garcia, Victor B. Sáenz

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

Latino males continue to lag behind their peers in college enrollment and attainment, even as evidence suggests the 2-year public college sector in particular is making some strides to address this inequity. Yet there are few published figures of enrollment trends for Latino males in 2-year public colleges on a national or state-by-state basis to provide context that might informs local policy and practice. Using the most recent available data from IPEDS and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Community Population Survey, this study establishes trends over roughly the last decade in enrollment numbers and, through the use of equity indices, gains …

The French Revolution In The French-Algerian War (1954-1962): Historical Analogy And The Limits Of French Historical Reason, Timothy Scott Johnson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines the use of the French Revolution as an explanatory device for discussing the French-Algerian War (1954-1962). Anticolonial intellectuals in France invoked the French Revolution to explain their reasons for supporting colonial reform as well as their solidarity with Algerian nationalist aims. Through an examination of intellectuals’ public interventions alongside French and Algerian historical narratives, I examine the ways in which historical alignment signaled political and cultural distance between France and Algeria. Making an independent Algeria analogous to eighteenth-century revolutionary France lent political and conceptual legitimacy to Algerian claims to an independent national identity while also reinforcing the …

Transactive Knowledge Systems, Shared Leadership Style, And Team Effectiveness, Christine L. Baker

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation examines relationships between transactive memory and transactive knowledge systems, shared leadership style, and team effectiveness. Transactive memory as mediator, perspective-taking and motivation as moderators, and temporal development of transactive memory are also examined. Two studies tested an IMOI model of relationships in a longitudinal field study of students in teams and in an on-line cross-sectional sample of working adults in the United States. Study 1 and 2 provided support for shared leadership style as predictive of transactive memory, and for shared leadership style and transactive memory as predictive of team effectiveness. Both studies support transactive memory and transactive …

Bayes Estimation Of The Logistic Distribution Parameters Based On Progressive Sampling, A. Rashad, M. Mahmoud, M. Yusuf

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper we develop approximate Bayes estimators of the two parameters logistic distribution. Lindley’s approximation and importance sampling techniques are applied. The Gaussian-gamma prior distribution and progressively type-II censored samples are assumed. Quadratic, linex and general entropy loss functions are used. The statistical performances of the Bayes estimates under quadratic, linex and general entropy loss functions are compared with those of the maximum likelihood estimators based on simulation study.

Field Estimates Of Parentage Reveal Sexually Antagonistic Selection On Body Size In A Population Of Anolis Lizards, Mary C. Duryea, Patrick Bergeron, Zachary Clare-Salzler, Ryan Calsbeek

Dartmouth Scholarship

Sexual dimorphism evolves when selection favors different phenotypic optima between the sexes. Such sexually antagonistic selection creates intralocus sexual conflict when traits are genetically correlated between the sexes and have sex‐specific optima. Brown anoles are highly sexually dimorphic: Males are on average 30% longer than females and 150% heavier in our study population. Viability selection on body size is known to be sexually antagonistic, and directional selection favors large male size whereas stabilizing selection constrains females to remain small. We build on previous studies of viability selection by measuring sexually antagonistic selection using reproductive components of fitness over three generations …

College of Education & Human Development Capstone Projects

This capstone project includes three distinct studies that explore issues of race, discipline and education. Existing literature underscores the over disciplining of students of Color. Research indicates programs like Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) are successful in decreasing disproportionate discipline for minority students in urban schools. No studies have addressed urban school leaders make sense of PBIS within the racialized context of their schools. The purpose of the first study is to explore ways principals make sense of PBIS policy in the racial context of their schools. This study also explores the role of racialized discourses in principal Sensemaking …

Predicting First-Semester College Student Success At A Small Technology College, Robert Blanchet

Education Doctoral

This quantitative study examined the degree to which traditional (high school grade point average (GPA) and standardized tests), noncognitive, and demographic variables predict first-semester college GPA and first-to-second semester retention among a sample of 386 first-year students at a small technology college. The aim of this research was to better understand the ways noncognitive variables may predict and explain college success for a general population of first-year students as well as a population of low-achieving students. Linear and logistical regression analysis were used to determine the degree to which each of the prescribed traditional, demographic (gender, race, parent education, and …

Bridging The Worlds Of Home And School: A Study Of The Relational Worlds Of First-Generation Students In A School Of Social Work, Miranda Cunningham Jul 2016

Bridging The Worlds Of Home And School: A Study Of The Relational Worlds Of First-Generation Students In A School Of Social Work, Miranda Cunningham

Dissertations and Theses

Much scholarship on first-generation students has focused on their academic and social integration in college (Collier & Morgan, 2008; Lowery-Hart & Pacheco, 2011; Stuber, 2011). Little is known about the experiences of first-generation students in schools of social work. In this research I've expanded the focus beyond students' experiences of academic integration to explore how first-generation students in a school of social work describe their relational worlds and the implications for professional socialization.

Informed by Standpoint Feminism and Postmodern/Post structural Feminism, I conducted focus groups with 19 students in two undergraduate programs and one graduate program in a school of …

Negotiation is a method for people to settle differences and achieve solutions. While formal negotiations can take the forms of conflict resolutions or licensing agreement with vendor negotiations, there are many informal forms of negotiation that take place every day. For example, two co-workers discussing the respective work responsibilities in a project that they are working on is a form of negotiation; a librarian asking for the supervisor’s approval to attend a professional conference is also a form of negotiation; two friend deciding where to go to eat lunch is a form of negotiation. As the purpose of negotiation is …
