Through self-initiated changes in their work (job crafting), employees can see greater meaning in their work than they would otherwise and thus fulfil their mission. Such an approach to work increases the individual's motivation, satisfaction and work performance, which in turn has a positive impact on work organisation. In the article, we examine the extent to which employees with different levels of education and number of years of work experience reshape their work and the consequences of the three dimensions of job crafting (changing tasks, relationships and cognitions). Five Seemingly Insurmountable Challenges Related To Attaining Long-Term Value From Theorizing About Information Systems, Steven Alter Dec 2015

Five Seemingly Insurmountable Challenges Related To Attaining Long-Term Value From Theorizing About Information Systems, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Recent articles such as Avison and Malaurent (2014) and Grover and Lyytinen (2015) question taken-for-granted assumptions about the centrality of theory in research published in leading journals and the near necessity of following repetitive scripts that sometimes are an obstacle to creativity. This paper goes a step further by providing examples and observations that illustrate five seemingly insurmountable challenges related to attaining long-term value from theorizing about information systems.

1) Divergent definitions of basic terms makes it extremely difficult to accumulate IS knowledge.

2) The IS discipline seems to take for granted that knowledge must take the form of theory. …

Fight Or Flight: Mobility, Political Behavior, And Nativism In The United States, Yamil Velez Dec 2015

Fight Or Flight: Mobility, Political Behavior, And Nativism In The United States, Yamil Velez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In recent decades, communities across the United States have seen increases in hostility toward immigrants. Prevailing theories in political science hold that responses to immigration are, in part, a function of local area demographics. However, assessments of these theories suffer from the critique that local area demographics and immigration preferences may be endogenous due to residential self-selection. Recent efforts sidestep this problem by using clever modeling strategies or experiments. Rather than viewing self-selection as a nuisance, however, this article develops and tests a theory that treats migration and political behavior as strategies residents invoke in the presence of local immigration. …
