Unique History, Unique Opportunity: Evangelicalism In Austria Since 1945, John D. Doss M.Div.
Unique History, Unique Opportunity: Evangelicalism In Austria Since 1945, John D. Doss M.Div.
Liberty Theological Review
The article deals with the history of evangelicalism in Austria, a subject on which there is hardly any scholarly research. In focus is the development of the newly recognized baptist, charismatic, mainline evangelical, mennonite and pentecostal denominations since 1945. The role of immigration in the growth of evangelicalism is examined, especially during two periods: the decade after WWII (1945-55) as well as the massive immigration from Eastern Europe (particularly from Romania) after the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989. The article also presents examples of indigenous church movements among the Austrian people themselves, especially during the 1970's and 1980's. …

Beyond The Mato Oput Tradition: Embedded Contestations In Transitional Justice For Post-Massacre Pajong, Northern Uganda, David-Ngendo Tshimba
Journal of African Conflicts and Peace Studies
Human beings to a great extent are what community stories narrate about them. This paper is informed by an ethnological field research carried in one of the remotest villages of Mucwini Sub-county in Kitgum district, northern Uganda, scrutinizes people’s stories as they echo concerns about justice from different perspectives of victimhood in the aftermath of a Lord’s Resistance Army-commanded massacre which claimed the lives of 56 people in a night, the majority of whom (21) were from the Pajong clan. After a decade, all direct violent confrontations have no doubt ceased, however, the search for peace still is utterly skewed …
Predicting Desired Outcomes From Applicants’ Medical School Admission Data, Mark D. Linville Jr.
Predicting Desired Outcomes From Applicants’ Medical School Admission Data, Mark D. Linville Jr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Medical schools in the United States serve to train the next generation of physicians, admitting students who will continue to advance each school’s mission. Admission committees are tasked with identifying those candidates who will be successful academically and who promote the objectives of the school with respect to mission. The Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University in northeast Tennessee seeks to attract and retain physicians with an interest in rural and primary care medicine. A total of 630 students were included in this study representing classes from 2001 to 2011. This study examined admissions data including MCAT …
The Decolonization Of Christianity In Colonial Kenya, Amanda Ruth Ford
The Decolonization Of Christianity In Colonial Kenya, Amanda Ruth Ford
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Kenya was an unusual case within the larger narrative of decolonization in the British Empire. The presence of white settlers, the relative newness of the colony, and the particular way in which the British pursued the civilizing mission all combined to make the end of empire particularly violent for all parties involved. Independence in Kenya was precipitated by a bloody civil war, known as Mau Mau, and the imposition of martial law by the government for almost a decade. In the midst of this chaos, the Church of England’s missionary body, the Church Missionary Society worked to protect their converts …

The Initiation Of Growth-Focused Relationships Involving Healthy Accountability, Stephen L. Shaffer
The Initiation Of Growth-Focused Relationships Involving Healthy Accountability, Stephen L. Shaffer
Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry
This paper summarizes a Doctor of Ministry project thesis conducted in 2011 that introduced healthy accountability within growth-focused relationships to shape an emergent spiritual growth culture at the Carbondale Church of Christ. The theological basis for the intervention (1) uses Romans 12 to establish the Christian community, not the individual, as the ultimate vision of fully realized human life and (2) asserts that spiritual growth, following Alasdair MacIntyre’s definition of a practice, must involve virtues such that the means of growth are reflective of the desired ends of growth. The positive results demonstrate the effectiveness of healthy accountability, illuminate participants' …

Properties Of Spacecraft Materials Exposed To Ionizing Radiation, Alex Souvall, Gregory Wilson, Katie Gamaunt, Ben Russon, Heather Tippets, Jr Dennison
Posters
The effects of ionizing radiation damage on the various properties of spacecraft materials resulting from exposure in the Space Survivability Testing chamber (SST) are being studied with both ex situ and in situ tests. The SST is a ground based test facility designed to mimic low earth orbit (LEO), and geosynchronous orbit to test potential environmental-induced modifications to small satellites , and materials. Tests described here expose spacecraft materials to a Sr90 ionizing beta radiation source at room temperature and in high vacuum. Ex situ optical transmission/reflectivity measurements glass samples will monitor optical darkening. Properties of polymeric samples will …

During the last decade, most new church plants in South Korea remained as small churches of less than one hundred members that are not self-sustaining or growing, because their leaders are heavily dependent upon limited discipleship models of few megachurches that rarely reflect the characteristics of small churches. Since newly planted churches rarely grow in the absence of effective discipleship models that suit their given cultures and geographical locations, their leaders need to be equipped with a biblical framework and applications for establishing discipleship models that aptly respond to the needs of their churches. The purpose of this thesis project …
Faithful Witness In Work And Rest, William Schumacher
Faithful Witness In Work And Rest, William Schumacher

Faithful Christian witness in work starts with the value of the work itself, in its own right, not as a means to some other end or a pretense for some specifically “religious” agenda.

“I Make These Confessions My Own” Lutheran Confessional Subscription In The Twenty-First Century Robert Kolb And Charles P. Arand, Robert Kolb, Charles Arand
Concordia Journal
The spirit of Augsburg and the method of the Wittenberg theologians carry the content of the Lutheran confessional documents into the many societies and cultures of the twenty-first century in which God calls Lutherans to repeat their confession of faith for the benefit of church and world.

God’S Word Produces Faith And Fruit Reflections From Luther’S Understanding Of The Sermon On The Mount, Robert Kolb
Concordia Journal
In his comments on the Sermon on the Mount in 1538 he made clear that the community’s light was to shine with good works, which meant specifically “the exercise, expression, and confession of the teaching of Christ and faith and suffering for its sake.”

Multi-Spacecraft Autonomous Positioning System: Leo Demo Development, Evan Anzalone, Chris Becker, Danielle Crump, Daniel Heater
Small Satellite Conference
The Multi-spacecraft Autonomous Positioning System enables a solar-system wide navigation capability. This architecture takes advantages of a growing interplanetary communication network. The spacecraft, as well as ground-based assets, share best estimated position and velocity, through embedded navigation packets. Combined with timing observations, this supports onboard autonomous state estimation. Through simulation-based analysis, this architecture has been shown to maintain state estimation accuracy during a Martian cruise while reducing the need for Earth-based state updates. The current stage of this research is development of a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation to further analyze this architecture. This allows for embedding of space-capable (and space-flown) components …
Congregational Aid: North American Protestant Engagement In International Relief And Development, Monty Lynn
Congregational Aid: North American Protestant Engagement In International Relief And Development, Monty Lynn
Management Sciences
A review of large North American Protestant congregations (n = 423) engaging in global relief and development, or ‘holistic mission’ (HM), suggests that half engage in HM activities per year, with the majority of those activities focused on human and physical sectors. Most activities are led by religious NGOs or missionaries and about half are short-term. A mix of proximity, poverty, population, and policy variables direct short- and long-term aid. Findings provide a benchmark for enhancing learning and partnerships among churches, NGOs, and development scholars, ultimately enhancing the efficacy of Protestant aid.
