Drive Toward Freedom: African American: The Story Of Black Automobility In The Fight For Civil Rights, Xavier Macy Dec 2015

Drive Toward Freedom: African American: The Story Of Black Automobility In The Fight For Civil Rights, Xavier Macy

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Looking across the 20th century, this thesis seeks to understand the relationship African Americans developed between automobility and the fight for civil rights, filling a gap left in the historiography of both the automobile and the Civil Rights Movement. Historians of the automobile have almost exclusively focused their lens on white suburbia and the “autotopias” that Americans created, while historians of the Civil Rights Movement ignored the automobile entirely. This thesis hopes to begin to fill that void by explaining how African Americans exploited the technological system of the automobile to create forms of transportation accessible to African American …

It Came Across The Plains: The 1918 Influenza Pandemic In Rural Nebraska, Kristin Watkins Dec 2015

It Came Across The Plains: The 1918 Influenza Pandemic In Rural Nebraska, Kristin Watkins

Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this historical case study was to understand and describe rural community experiences during the 1918 influenza pandemic in Nebraska.

Examining the rural experience in Nebraska during the 1918 influenza pandemic provided a new level of insight into the differences and similarities between the urban and rural experience. As related by a detailed study of Omaha during the 1918 pandemic, the community was devastated by disease. Despite public ordinances and health department warnings, streetcars ran at capacity, parades were held to raise money for war bonds, and the annual Aksarben Coronation took place. Cases of flu were too …

Jane Minot Sedgwick Ii And The World Of American Catholic Converts, 1820-1890, Erin M. Bartram Dec 2015

Jane Minot Sedgwick Ii And The World Of American Catholic Converts, 1820-1890, Erin M. Bartram

Doctoral Dissertations

When Jane Minot Sedgwick II (1821-1889), the daughter of an elite New England Unitarian family, became a Catholic in 1853, she joined a new faith culture while remaining embedded in the social world of her birth. As a young woman, she was uninterested in her family’s religious activities and uncomfortable with their zeal. This dissertation argues that Sedgwick only came to see Catholicism as a viable religious option after developing friendships with other elite women who had recently converted. After studying Catholicism for ten years, Sedgwick joined the Church, a decision she described as rational. In light of her independent …

Influence Of Physical And Biological Oceanography On The Structure Of The Seabird Community In The Northeastern Chukchi Sea, Adrian E. Gall Dec 2015

Influence Of Physical And Biological Oceanography On The Structure Of The Seabird Community In The Northeastern Chukchi Sea, Adrian E. Gall

Marine Biology

The Chukchi Sea is losing seasonal ice cover as global temperatures rise, facilitating human access to the region for activities such as oil and gas exploration, shipping, and tourism. Processes and responses to environmental change by marine ecosystems are often challenging to quantify because they are hidden under water. Seabirds, however, offer visible evidence of the health and status of marine ecosystems. I studied the community structure, variability in abundance and distribution, and habitat associations of seabirds in the eastern Chukchi Sea. My results provide insights into the influence of climate change on seabirds and a benchmark against which to …

Understanding Generosity At Military Colleges And Universities: Characteristics And Motivations Of Major Donors At The Federal Service Academies And Senior Military Colleges, John Paul Dowd Iii Dec 2015

Understanding Generosity At Military Colleges And Universities: Characteristics And Motivations Of Major Donors At The Federal Service Academies And Senior Military Colleges, John Paul Dowd Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics and motivations of major donors at three federal service academies and the six senior military colleges. Although much literature has been published on donor motivation, as well as studies determining what donor characteristics are linked to the decision of alumni to financially contribute back to their alma maters, research specific to the federal service academies and the senior military colleges could not be found. Therefore, this study addressed the void in the literature. The methods used to gather this data were survey instrument and personal interviews. The researcher sent letters …

Thinking And Making: Art And Craft In Library Of Congress Classification, Rochelle Smith Dec 2015

Thinking And Making: Art And Craft In Library Of Congress Classification, Rochelle Smith

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Why are art and craft so widely separated in the Library of Congress Classification (LC) System? All classification systems give insight into worldviews prevalent at the time they were created, and library systems are especially illustrative of the cultures and cultural moments which shaped them. The separation of art and craft in LC, in N and TT respectively, compared to their collocation in LC’s contemporaries, Dewey Decimal Classification and Cutter’s Expansive Classification, suggests divergent views of the arts within librarianship, illuminating American views on the relative definitions of art and craft from the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries.

Verticillium Dahliae Causes The Fungal Wilting Disease Of Cotton Plants Grown On The Mississippi State North Farm, Fahad Mohammedsaleh Albukhari

Theses and Dissertations

The emergence and spread of Verticillium wilt were observed in cotton plants at the R.R. Foil Plant Science Research Center at Mississippi State during the late summer in 2013 and 2014. Several fungi with different morphology and growth characteristics were isolated from diseased cotton plants. Genomic DNA was extracted from the isolated fungal species and used in molecular typing via PCR amplification and DNA sequencing analysis of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. A total of five fungal genera were identified, and Verticillium sp. was the most frequently isolated genus. The isolated Verticillium strains could be Verticillium dahliae, Verticillium …

Time To Career: Science And Engineering Education To Career Trajectories, Angie Nim Choi

Theses and Dissertations

Two waves of data from the 2006 and 2008 Survey of Earned Doctorates and Survey of Doctorate Recipients were used in this study to investigate time to doctorate (TTD) and time to career (TTC) for science and engineering PhDs. Three-way factorial ANOVAs were conducted, and TTD results indicated main effects for gender, US citizenship, and Biglan classification, and interaction effects for gender and US citizenship. US citizen PhDs progressed to their career approximately one mean year faster than foreign PhDs. For TTC, PhDs who held postdocs progressed to their careers in 14 and 15 years for females and males respectively …

The Second Amendment Standard Of Review After Mcdonald: "Historical Guideposts" And The Missing Arguments In Mcdonald V. City Of Chicago, Patrick J. Charles Dec 2015

The Second Amendment Standard Of Review After Mcdonald: "Historical Guideposts" And The Missing Arguments In Mcdonald V. City Of Chicago, Patrick J. Charles

ConLawNOW

In this article, Patrick Charles addresses the first step in analyzing Second Amendment challenges – whether the challenged conduct was “publicly accepted” or “publicly understood” as within the scope of the Second Amendment, circa 1791. This article also analyzes two premises on which the McDonald plurality based its decision, ultimately concluding that those premises are inaccurate. In his opinion, Justice Alito asserted that State constitutions at the time of the founding generally protected an individual right to keep and bear arms. However, an in-depth examination of all State constitutional provisions suggests otherwise. Secondly, John Bingham’s understanding of what the Fourteenth …

Originalism And Its Tools: A Few Caveats, David T. Hardy Dec 2015

Originalism And Its Tools: A Few Caveats, David T. Hardy

ConLawNOW

In District of Columbia v. Heller, the United States Supreme Court adopted original public understanding as an interpretative tool. While this approach has the virtue of establishing meaning independent of a court’s personal values and preferences, this article explores some hazards which courts should try to avoid. First, one must resist the temptation to see historians as invariably objective; some are apt to push a personal agenda, or get a reputation as a “debunker,” at the cost of distorting, overlooking, or even inventing the historical record. Historical studies of this type have misled the Ninth Circuit, and a dissent …

Influences Of African American English On Cognitive Processing And Reading Comprehension For African American Adolescent Readers, Alma Renee Dawson Dec 2015

Influences Of African American English On Cognitive Processing And Reading Comprehension For African American Adolescent Readers, Alma Renee Dawson

Theses and Dissertations

There has been a virtual wave of studies investigating influences of African American English on academic achievement. Many of these studies have taken a sociolinguistic stance citing language stratification and low perception of the language as causes for the success and failures of these students. Others have suggested that the language used in family and community settings are not congruent with the academic language in school. In this study, I investigated the influences of African American English on reading achievement from a psycholinguistic perspective. This study analyzed the oral language, linguistics, and the cognitive processing behaviors of African American students …

National Trends And A Local Response: A History Of The Conservative, Evangelical Twin Tiers Christian Academy, Cary M. Shaw Dec 2015

National Trends And A Local Response: A History Of The Conservative, Evangelical Twin Tiers Christian Academy, Cary M. Shaw

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Ever since the common school era, a significant number of Protestant Americans have supported the nation’s public schools. A dramatic change occurred, however, when in “one of the most visible dissenting movements of the late twentieth century” many conservative Protestants turned away from public education to open their own private Christian schools (Carper & Hunt, 2007, p. 7). The 1970s proved to be a time of explosive growth for these new schools. According to some estimates, Christian schools opened at a rate of two per day throughout that decade (Rose, 1988, p. 34). Though thousands of these Christian schools were …

English Language Literacy And The Prediction Of Academic Success In And Beyond The Pathway Program, Jennifer Haan, Karyn E. Mallett Dec 2015

English Language Literacy And The Prediction Of Academic Success In And Beyond The Pathway Program, Jennifer Haan, Karyn E. Mallett

English Faculty Publications

Widespread emphasis on internationalization in higher education has generated tremendous growth in international student enrollments at U.S. colleges and universities. In fact, from 2002/2003 to 2012/2013, the number of international students in the U.S. increased from 586,323 to 819,644, an increase of almost 40% over ten years (Institute of International Education 2013). These students are primarily multilingual, contributing varying levels of English proficiency and, often, a new sense of institutional diversity. In addition, these students often pay out-of-state tuition, making it possible for the university to diversify tuition streams as well.

Partially motivated by these realities, and in order to …

Empirical Evaluation Of Metadata For Video Games And Interactive Media, Rachel I. Clarke, Jin Ha Lee, Andrew Perti Dec 2015

Empirical Evaluation Of Metadata For Video Games And Interactive Media, Rachel I. Clarke, Jin Ha Lee, Andrew Perti

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Despite increasing interest in and acknowledgment of the significance of video games, current descriptive practices are not sufficiently robust to support searching, browsing, and other access behaviors from diverse user groups. To address this issue, the Game Metadata Research Group at the University of Washington Information School, in collaboration with the Seattle Interactive Media Museum, worked to create a standardized metadata schema. This metadata schema was empirically evaluated using multiple approaches—collaborative review, schema testing, semi-structured user interview, and a large-scale survey. Reviewing and testing the schema revealed issues and challenges in sourcing the metadata for particular elements, determining the level …

Motherhood And Religious Crisis In The English Novel, 1678-1800, Nicole Garret Marie Dec 2015

Motherhood And Religious Crisis In The English Novel, 1678-1800, Nicole Garret Marie

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation contributes to post-secularist histories of the long eighteenth century, its literary contexts, and the political history of women by examining the intersections of feminist and religious themes in narratives about motherhood. In literary scholarship, post-secularism asks us to reassess the importance of religious faith and religious institutions in past societies and their literature. The eighteenth century, long coterminous with Enlightenment secularism, is a particularly crucial moment for revisionist approaches to the literary history of the West. While important work has been done on the religious foundations of early feminism and the political history of motherhood, this study is …

Original in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies, reviews, and book chapters published in English were included. Various laser systems …

Community Belonging And Community Building: Women In Early Modern Granada, Nichole Suzanne Prescott Dec 2015

Community Belonging And Community Building: Women In Early Modern Granada, Nichole Suzanne Prescott

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation addresses community belonging, community building, and community identity of women in the city of Granada during the early modern period, showing how women made use of their Granadan social context. It situates the women of Granada in the context of the economic and social turmoil throughout the early modern period, and in particular of the seventeenth century. Non-elite urban women in early modern Granada actively shaped the civic economy, culture, and religious life of the city and, in turn, their lives were shaped by the interplay of these elements. Women played indispensable commercial roles in the market economy, …

Becomes A Woman Best: Female Prophetic Figures In Shakespeare's Plays, Alan Morris Cochrum Dec 2015

Becomes A Woman Best: Female Prophetic Figures In Shakespeare's Plays, Alan Morris Cochrum

English Theses - Archive

This dissertation argues that female characters in Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, Henry VIII, Richard III, Macbeth, and 1 Henry VI function as prophets in the style of the Old Testament. In a culture that venerates Holy Writ but also devalues women, a dramatic exemplar wrapped in the mantle of a biblical prophet becomes a potential model for playgoers as well as an embodied critique. Paulina, Katherine of Aragon, and Margaret of Anjou condemn injustice, uphold the cause of the vulnerable, challenge the abuse of royal and spiritual authority, and frequently echo aspects of biblical figures such as Moses, Isaiah, and …

Historicism And Holism: Failures Of Originalist Translation, Jonathan Gienapp Dec 2015

Historicism And Holism: Failures Of Originalist Translation, Jonathan Gienapp

Fordham Law Review

For as long as the U.S. Constitution has existed, Americans have appealed to the history of its creation to interpret its meaning. But only since the advent of originalism—the well-known constitutional theory that requires interpreting the Constitution today in accordance with its original meaning—has historical study been so immediately implicated by constitutional interpretation. Despite potential, though, for meaningful exchange between originalists and historians, little has taken place. That originalism plays an ever-growing role in contemporary political culture only makes the lack of dialogue all the more unfortunate.

Motherhood As Contested Ideological Terrain: Essentialist And Queer Discourses Of Motherhood At Play In Female–Female Co-Mothers’ Talk, Elizabeth A. Suter, Leah M. Seurer, Stephanie Webb, Brian Grewe Jr., Jody Koenig Kellas Dec 2015

Motherhood As Contested Ideological Terrain: Essentialist And Queer Discourses Of Motherhood At Play In Female–Female Co-Mothers’ Talk, Elizabeth A. Suter, Leah M. Seurer, Stephanie Webb, Brian Grewe Jr., Jody Koenig Kellas

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Framed by relational dialectics theory (Baxter), this investigation considered the meaning(s) of motherhood in female–female co-motherhood. Analysis identified two competing discourses: (1) discourse of essential motherhood (DEM) and (2) discourse of queer motherhood (DQM). Speakers’ invocation of the DEM reinscribes the mainstream US cultural discourse that children can have only one authentic (i.e., biological) mother, whereas invocation of the DQM denaturalizes the DEM’s presumptions of authentic motherhood as biological, interrupts monomaternalism, destabilizes the patriarch, and troubles the equation of biological with moral motherhood. Whereas interpenetrations of the DEM and DQM were typically sites of adversarial discursive struggle, in a few …

Vicarious Shame, Narrative, Social Reconnection And Public Recognition In Bamporiki’S Sin To Them, Shame On Me, Rangira Béa Gallimore Dec 2015

Vicarious Shame, Narrative, Social Reconnection And Public Recognition In Bamporiki’S Sin To Them, Shame On Me, Rangira Béa Gallimore

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Sin to Them, Shame on Me is a testimony by the Rwandan writer, filmmaker and peace advocate, Bamporiki, who suffers from vicarious shame because of the crime of genocide that Hutu perpetrators committed against Tutsis in the name of the group. His testimony redeems his sense of self by acknowledging the wrongdoing of his group, yet it also represents a step that separates him from that group. His powerful testimonial narratives allow him to associate with genocide survivors and the world, and to develop a new identity as a Rwandan. The polymorphic narrative structure of his written testimony in which …

Reversing The Tao: A Framework For Credible Space Deterrence, Christopher Michael Stone Dec 2015

Reversing The Tao: A Framework For Credible Space Deterrence, Christopher Michael Stone

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This thesis was written to provide the reader with a firm understanding of the realities of the current DoD space deterrence concept, its shortcomings and the threat that these shortcomings pose to the United States and its Allies if a more realistic, credible space deterrence concept is not created and deployed. To highlight these shortcomings, a review of deterrence theory from classical to modern writers were explored to compare and contrast with the DoD's present concept to highlight its lack of deterrence theory. In addition, it was highlighted through an analysis of the Chinese view of deterrence in space, space …

"Persephone's Contemporary Dilemma: Consent, Sexuality, And "Female Empowerment." [2015], Cassandra Elizabeth Cerjanic

Master's Theses

Greek mythology never strays very far from Western imagination. Though every few years literature involving the infamous Gods tapers off into the back of our collective minds, a resurgence soon follows. The late Romantic literary movement (as popularized by Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelly, and John Keats) depended heavily upon Greco- Roman mythology to help illustrate characters that existed somewhere between the shadow of imagination and the truth of humanity. Perhaps in an attempt to harken back to Romanticism, contemporary poetry has once again given life to the Greek Gods. Mythological characters can be seen throughout the works of modern …

The Musical Theater Style Of Jason Robert Brown, Kathryn Laura Voelker Dec 2015

The Musical Theater Style Of Jason Robert Brown, Kathryn Laura Voelker

Dissertations

Jason Robert Brown is emerging as one of Broadway’s top musical theater composers. The majority of musical theater scholarship focuses on extra-musical elements; the only composer who has been examined by the music academy is Stephen Sondheim. Brown has been described as a “disciple” of Sondheim, and is on his way to equaling his predecessor’s longevity and fame. This study examines the compositional style of Brown, and explores his ability to use musical elements to enhance the drama of the musical through his first four productions: Songs For A New World, Parade, The Last Five Years, and 13. Brown’s treatment …
