Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

In addition to the T2R bitter taste receptors, neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) have recently been shown to be involved in the bitter taste transduction of nicotine, acetylcholine and ethanol. However, at present it is not clear if nAChRs are expressed in enteroendocrine cells other than beta cells of the pancreas and enterochromaffin cells, and if they play a role in the synthesis and release of neurohumoral peptides. Accordingly, we investigated the expression and functional role of nAChRs in enteroendocrine STC-1 cells. Our studies using RT-PCR, qRT-PCR, immunohistochemical and Western blotting techniques demonstrate that STC-1 cells express several α and …

Effect Of Individualized Bladder Rehabilitation Program In Patients With Neurogenic Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction, A Pilot Study, Peir-Renn Wang, Wei-Che Wang, Sung-Lang Chen, Yu-Hui Huang, Yu-Fen Lai, Hsiu-Chun Yang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Objectives: Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) is one of the major sequelae after spinal cord injury (SCI) and a cause of increased morbidity and mortality in SCI patients. Current treatment strategies for NLUTD include medication, non-invasive conservative management, minimally invasive therapy, and surgical intervention. However, there are no studies regarding non-invasive conservative management that combines pelvic floor muscle (PFM) exercises and electrical stimulation (ES). This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of individualized bladder rehabilitation programs, which included education on voiding behavior, PFM exercise training combined with electromyography (EMG) biofeedback, and ES (for bladder inhibition or PFM strengthening), …

Marjinalisasi (Publik) Aktivis Dalam Literatur Public Relations, Nurhidayati Kusumaningtyas

Informasi

Abstract
Activism can involve an individual or a collection of a few people. The practice of activism is often perceived as negative and destructive actions. In the literature of public relations, we will discover how the activist group pressure group categorized into the "source of trouble" and must be addressed by public relations practitioners. This perspective led to a bias that leads to marginalization of "activist public" in public relations literature. Marginalization process lasts through two methods: (1) the provision of which tend negative stigma, (2) the dominance of the paradigm of "corporate centric" in the literature of public relations. …

Faculty and Staff Publications

The Lower Colorado River and Rio Grande Basins are home to many riparian vertebrate species with different degrees of rarity. In our study, we focused on two species of birds and two species of gartersnakes that are associated with riparian areas: the Yellow-breasted Chat (Icteria virens), the Yellow Warbler (Setophaga petechia), the Northern Mexican Gartersnake (Thamnophis eques megalops) and the Narrow-headed Gartersnake (T. rufipunctatus). While the extent of distributions of these species is relatively large, they are often patchily distributed in populations that are small; in addition, both gartersnake species are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Aside …

However, its mechanism underlying the beneficial effects of WBVT in cardiovascular health has not been well documented. Therefore, this review highlighted the impacts of WBVT …

Easy Prisoner Cases, Lisa Kerr Dec 2015

Easy Prisoner Cases, Lisa Kerr

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

In prisoner litigation, straightforward victory is rare. Win or lose, prisoners most often remain in the custody of officials who continue to wield substantial power over them. And even where claims succeed, courts may design legal tests in ways that are deferential over time to the claims and preferences of prison authorities. Prisoners prevailed in two recent Supreme Court of Canada cases that involved, first, post-sentencing legislative changes to parole entitlements and, second, a decision to transfer a prisoner to a higher security setting. In Canada (Attorney General) v. Whaling, the Court protected prisoner expectations at sentencing regarding the length …

Black-Tailed And White-Tailed Jackrabbits In The American West: History, Ecology, Ecological Significance, And Survey Methods, Matthew T. Simes, Kathleen M. Longshore, Kenneth E. Nussear, Greg L. Beatty, David E. Brown, Todd C. Esque

Western North American Naturalist

Across the western United States, Leporidae are the most important prey item in the diet of Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos). Leporids inhabiting the western United States include black-tailed (Lepus californicus) and white-tailed jackrabbits (Lepus townsendii) and various species of cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus spp.). Jackrabbits (Lepus spp.) are particularly important components of the ecological and economic landscape of western North America because their abundance influences the reproductive success and population trends of predators such as coyotes (Canis latrans), bobcats (Lynx rufus), and a number of raptor species. …

Rapamycin Rescues Vascular, Metabolic And Learning Deficits In Apolipoprotein E4 Transgenic Mice With Pre-Symptomatic Alzheimer’S Disease, Ai-Ling Lin, Jordan B. Jahrling, Wei Zhang, Nicholas Derosa, Vikas Bakshi, Peter Romero, Veronica Galvan, Arlan Richardson

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Apolipoprotein E ɛ4 allele is a common susceptibility gene for late-onset Alzheimer's disease. Brain vascular and metabolic deficits can occur in cognitively normal apolipoprotein E ɛ4 carriers decades before the onset of Alzheimer's disease. The goal of this study was to determine whether early intervention using rapamycin could restore neurovascular and neurometabolic functions, and thus impede pathological progression of Alzheimer's disease-like symptoms in pre-symptomatic Apolipoprotein E ɛ4 transgenic mice. Using in vivo, multimodal neuroimaging, we found that apolipoprotein E ɛ4 mice treated with rapamycin had restored cerebral blood flow, blood–brain barrier integrity and glucose metabolism, compared …

The Constitutional Dimensions Of Aboriginal Title, Brian Slattery Dec 2015

The Constitutional Dimensions Of Aboriginal Title, Brian Slattery

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

As the Supreme Court reaffirms in Tsilhqot’in Nation v. British Columbia (2014), Aboriginal title is a sui generis right which cannot be described in traditional property terms. This article argues that the explanation for this fact is that Aboriginal title is not a concept of private law. It is a concept of public law. It does not deal with the rights of private entities but with the rights and powers of constitutional entities that form part of the Canadian federation. If we look for analogies to Aboriginal title, we find a close parallel in Provincial title – the rights held …

Towards A Public Law Of Privacy: Meeting The Big Data Challenge, Lisa M. Austin Dec 2015

Towards A Public Law Of Privacy: Meeting The Big Data Challenge, Lisa M. Austin

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

Privacy law, to the extent that it regulates state information practices, wears two “public” hats. The first hat is constitutional law. For example, the Canadian Charter protects privacy through protecting individuals against unreasonable searches and seizures. The second hat is public sector data protection law modelled on what are known as Fair Information Practices (FIPs). For example, in Canada the federal Privacy Act regulates the collection, use and disclosure of personal information held by government institutions and provides individuals with a right of access to that information. The constitutional hat is concerned with state-individual relations in the context of law …
