Separating Families And Combinatorial Games, Dominik Kim Vu
Separating Families And Combinatorial Games, Dominik Kim Vu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation consists of three results from the domain of extremal combinatorics. While they are all interconnected, we can distinguish two major areas: separating families and combinatorial games. In the following we shall outline them in further detail. Searching is a fundamental tasks inherent to human life both past and present. With the rise of computers and information technology, it was necessary to put all these related tasks into a unified mathematical framework. It fell to Rényi and Katona in the 1960s to pioneer this field. Providing what is nowadays common knowledge about binary search trees, and standard programming approaches …

Patterns And Practices Of Women's Leadership In The Yorkshire Quaker Community, 1760-1820, Helen Plant
Patterns And Practices Of Women's Leadership In The Yorkshire Quaker Community, 1760-1820, Helen Plant
Quaker Studies
By the second half of the eighteenth century, women ministers had become the principal upholders of the spiritual life of Quakerism in Yorkshire. Drawing on a range of sources including the institutional records of Quaker Meetings, personal correspondence and spiritual journals and autobiographies, this paper aims to shed light on the precise nature of female leadership in the Religious Society of Friends and to contribute to greater understanding of the conditions under which it became dominant. It suggests that the growing tendency for women to outnumber men as ministers was closely linked to wider social and economic trends within contemporary …

The Spiritual Therapeutic Preferences Of Online Learners And On-Campus Learners At A Christian College, Debra Masterson
The Spiritual Therapeutic Preferences Of Online Learners And On-Campus Learners At A Christian College, Debra Masterson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative study was to see if there was a difference in the spiritual therapeutic preferences of students at a Christian college who stay on-campus or students who take classes online. This study also investigated for differences in preferences between males and females as well as graduate students compared to undergraduate students. This study tested to see if there was a relationship between stress and spiritual therapeutic preferences among on-campus students and online students. Relative spiritual therapeutic preferences were assessed by the Nurse Spiritual Therapeutic Scale, and relative levels of stress were assessed by the Perceived Stress …
"Nobody With A Good Car Needs To Be Justified": Materialism And Commercialism In Flannery O'Connor's Fiction, Maria Vallas
"Nobody With A Good Car Needs To Be Justified": Materialism And Commercialism In Flannery O'Connor's Fiction, Maria Vallas
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Flannery O’Connor was writing in a time of great transition for American society. The 1950s brought with them a post-war economy that was creating a middle class that suddenly had disposal income and leisure time. To O’Connor, this translated into a culture that was becoming increasingly more distracted by the secular and material, and moving farther and farther away from the Christian ideal. This was not simply a cultural phenomenon to her – it was a danger, and more to the point, as a Christian writer, it was a call to arms. O’Connor’s work can be seen as a series …
Catechetical Formation For Pdl Volunteers Based On Pope Francis’ Teaching On Accompaniment, Inclusivity, And Dialogue, Michelle A. Vincoy
Catechetical Formation For Pdl Volunteers Based On Pope Francis’ Teaching On Accompaniment, Inclusivity, And Dialogue, Michelle A. Vincoy
Loyola Papers
This article examines catechetical formation for Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) volunteers, grounded in Pope Francis’ teachings on accompaniment, inclusivity, and dialogue. Focusing on the National Bilibid Prisons in the Philippines, it proposes contextualized adult catechetical modules using a kerygmatic-mystagogical- synodality framework. The study highlights the prison as a faith community and emphasizes transformative formation that fosters encounter with Christ, spiritual growth, and missionary discipleship, enabling PDL volunteers to live out Christian values meaningfully within the prison context.

Grounding Student Affairs In A Catholic Charism: The Journey Of One Faculty Member In Connecting Curriculum With Mission, Rich Whitney Phd, Mark Laboe
Journal of Catholic Education
The institutional mission of a university guides interactions among faculty, staff, students, and others and is instrumental in shaping the campus culture. As such, it is important that all members of a campus community not only understand the mission, but also have a sense of agency in determining how to live the mission through their work. This article presents a case study of one faculty member’s journey to deeper mission understanding, identification, and agency. The article explores commonalities between Vincentian Personalism and the basic tenets of the field of Student Affairs and highlights experiences and formation needed by lay faculty …

Reclaiming The Spiritual Leadership Role Of Christian Parents In Family Life: Coaching And Markers, Cindy Hayes
Reclaiming The Spiritual Leadership Role Of Christian Parents In Family Life: Coaching And Markers, Cindy Hayes
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Christians in the Western culture often struggle to pass on their faith to the next generation and as a result, the way God designed the family to function is being unwittingly abandoned. Countless parents today are leaving genuine faith and reliance on God behind. Though God's Word gives specific instructions on how to maintain and pass on faith, many have abdicated this injunction. In an effort to encourage authentic faith within the family, the local church can come alongside parents to help them understand and share their faith by offering training and coaching to embrace their own faith and pass …

Infinite Horizon: The Prairie Spirituality Of Ronald Rolheiser, Michael W. Higgins
Infinite Horizon: The Prairie Spirituality Of Ronald Rolheiser, Michael W. Higgins
Mission & Culture Publications
Ronald Rolheiser, president of the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio Texas (but a native of the Saskatchewan prairie), is one of the most popular Catholic spiritual writers and syndicated columnists at work today.
What some critics see as Rolheiser’s complacency, his supposedly uncritical embrace of modern secular society, is actually borne of his remarkable faith and confidence in God’s abiding presence and care. Like the philosopher Charles Taylor, a fellow Canadian and Catholic, Rolheiser is keenly aware that modern liberal values such as tolerance and benevolence, and especially respect for individual dignity and freedom, have deep Christian roots.

Church Hospitality: A Biblical Model For Growth Based On The Seven Churches In Revelation, Gesner Noel
Church Hospitality: A Biblical Model For Growth Based On The Seven Churches In Revelation, Gesner Noel
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Church growth seeks both to actualize the precepts of the "Great Commission", to attract new members and sustain current congregation. One of the fundamental problems is the inability to preserve hospitality. The pertinence of hospitality to the Church originates from Scriptures that clearly exemplify Christ's deeds and teachings of hospitality. This thesis project will investigate the seven churches in Revelation and reveal factors of outstanding and inhospitable practices in relation to Church growth and hospitality. Surveys will be based on unregulated interactions among pastors. Twenty pastors across five denominations, Evangelical Lutheran, Charismatic, Pentecostal, Seven-Day Adventist, and Roman Catholic will demonstrate …

Trauma-Informed Research And Planning: Understanding Government And Urban Native Community Partnerships To Addressing Substance-Exposed Pregnancies In Portland, Or, Amanda Mercier
Dissertations and Theses
In 2011, representatives from the Multnomah County Health Departments and several Native-serving organizations came together to address substance-exposed pregnancies among urban Native Americans in Portland, Oregon. From these partnerships, the Future Generations Collaborative was formed representing a significant shift toward community-led maternal child health research and planning. Additionally, the Future Generations Collaborative adopted a historical trauma-informed community based participatory research and planning process. This is particularly significant considering government agencies' role in colonization within Native communities. The purpose of this case study is to explore partnerships between government agencies and the Portland Native community within the Future Generations Collaborative. Given …

Spirituality, Creativity, Identity, And Art Therapy, Theresa Crooks
LMU Theses and Dissertations
This research explores the question: how does an art therapist’s understanding of God as Creator form his/her identity and inform his/her clinical practice? A review was done in the art therapy, spirituality and psychology integration, and creation theology literature to look at existing research that answers this question. A lack of information in the art therapy literature prompted the development of this study to respond to this inquiry. This involved gathering data from LMU MFT graduates who expressed in a survey that they were willing to participate in this study. Four graduates were able to attend an art workshop to …

"The Popular Thing To Do" Examining Young Evangelicals' Motivations For Short-Term Mission Trips, Kelsey Mcghee
"The Popular Thing To Do" Examining Young Evangelicals' Motivations For Short-Term Mission Trips, Kelsey Mcghee
Honors College Theses
Evangelical Christians are taking short-term mission trips in ever increasing numbers, with several billion dollars a year invested in these efforts. This thesis set out to understand if there was a gender difference in the motivations of young evangelical men and women, ages 14-25, who participate in short-term mission trips. Using historical perspectives on missions and functionalism, this thesis explores the motivations of recent short-term missionaries. I expected a large difference between the genders based on historical narratives of men and women missionaries, as well as my own experience in missions. However, after interviewing seventeen people, ten women and seven …

St. Louis De Montfort: Priest Of Jesus Christ And Preacher Of True Devotion To Mary, Frederick L. Miller
St. Louis De Montfort: Priest Of Jesus Christ And Preacher Of True Devotion To Mary, Frederick L. Miller
Marian Studies
In this paper, I shall focus on St. Louis de Montfort, the Priest, and on the Blessed Virgin Mary’s role in his life and preaching. Montfort’s incorporation of Mary into his preaching of the Gospel, in my estimation, is important for all seminarians and priests engaged in active ministry. St. Louis de Montfort is also the special patron of the Legion of Mary, which remains among the largest apostolic movements in the Church. Not only does his teaching provide the specific spirituality for the Legion of Mary, but his zeal as a missionary has molded members of the Legion into …
Doing Theology Through Discernment: An Analysis Of Teresa Of Avila’S Interior Castle, Lydia Hawkins
Doing Theology Through Discernment: An Analysis Of Teresa Of Avila’S Interior Castle, Lydia Hawkins
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Modernism's notion of reason-based knowledge as the most valid has greatly impacted the practice of theology. As theology moved into the academic world, experiential modes of gaining knowledge of God began to be viewed with skepticism and were divorced from intellectual modes of gaining knowledge of God. "Doing theology," as pre-modern Christians understood it, is no longer widely practiced in the field of theology. While modernism narrowed what is considered valid knowledge to reason-based inquiry, post-modernism has found modernism's conclusion not entirely adequate and is broadening the scope for gaining modes of valid knowledge. Applying the post-modernist approach to Teresa …

Use Of Complementary And Alternative Therapies: A Pilot Survey, Hector Ortiz-Cintron
Use Of Complementary And Alternative Therapies: A Pilot Survey, Hector Ortiz-Cintron
HIM 1990-2015
Meeting patient expectations in relation to pain management is an essential component of palliative and end-of-life care. However, previous research has demonstrated that pain is highly prevalent, especially during the four months prior to death. Poorly controlled pain contributes to cognitive failure, depression and an inability to complete daily activities. Unfortunately, pain and symptom management are often inadequate for patients placed in hospice care. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the perspectives of hospice nurses on complementary and alternative therapies to determine if there is an educational need in order to aide in the management of chronic pain …
