Clare And Francis: A Mission In The Name Of The Lord, James Koch Dec 2014

Clare And Francis: A Mission In The Name Of The Lord, James Koch

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph:

In the film, Clare and Francis, the viewer is taken through the significant life events of Francis and Clare of Assisi that led them to become people of God. While Francis and Clare lived in the thirteenth century, the film portrays their spiritual journeys with commendable historical accuracy. In particular, there is much to be analyzed in the meeting of Francis and the Sultan for its significance and the accuracy of how it is depicted in the film.

Walter And Emma Malone: Friends Of Sinners And The Poor, John Oliver Nov 2014

Walter And Emma Malone: Friends Of Sinners And The Poor, John Oliver

Quaker Studies

The Malones, leaders of Holiness Quakerism, were presented in The Transformation of American Quakerism: Orthodox Friends 1800-1907, an otherwise excellent early work by historian Thomas Hamm, as leaders of a movement whose ' dominant note ...was opposition to any type of reform activity'. If too strong, it is fair to suggest that numbers of Holiness Friends, including the Malones, were relatively indifferent to political, economic and social reform. But seeing them in this light, or as mere obstructionists to 'modern thought', does not quite capture who they were or what they were about. This article contends the Mal ones had …

America's Learning About Foreign Places Through The Eyes Of Missionaries: Writings In The Friends' Missionary Advocate, 1885-1933, Stanley D. Brunn, Elizabeth J. Leppman Nov 2014

America's Learning About Foreign Places Through The Eyes Of Missionaries: Writings In The Friends' Missionary Advocate, 1885-1933, Stanley D. Brunn, Elizabeth J. Leppman

Quaker Studies

Missionaries were among the travelers who supplied American adults and children with information about foreign places. Because they enjoyed a high status and respect with their home congregations and because they lived among peoples in foreign, often exotic, lands, missionaries and their writings enjoyed a wide and attentive audience. Materials in The Friends' Missionary Advocate between 1885 and 1933 report that information on foreign regions reached American audiences through presentations at monthly and quarterly meetings and at yearly conferences. Articles, letters, reports, maps, and pictures were also a medium for influencing Americans' impressions of the world.

The Early Periodicals Of The Iglesia Filipina Independiente (1903–1904) And The Emergence Of A Transregional And Transcontinental Indigenous-Christian Public Sphere, Adrian Hermann Oct 2014

The Early Periodicals Of The Iglesia Filipina Independiente (1903–1904) And The Emergence Of A Transregional And Transcontinental Indigenous-Christian Public Sphere, Adrian Hermann

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

The early periodicals of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI), La Verdad (1903) and La Iglesia Filipina Independiente: Revista Católica (1903–1904), have been quoted as primary sources but have not been explored in their own right. Since its beginnings, the IFI understood itself as belonging to a transcontinental, global movement of independent Catholic churches. The periodicals published various letters that the IFI had received from foreign Catholic groups that were similarly independent of Rome. This research note focuses on these periodicals and locates the IFI in an emerging transregional and transcontinental indigenous-Christian public sphere. Keywords: Iglesia Filipina Independiente • Periodicals • Indigenous-Christian …

An Integrative Study Of Doxological Metanarrative, Mission, Motivation And Mechanism, João Mordomo

Business as Mission Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation engages in an integrative study of the doxological metanarrative of Scripture in relation to mission, motivation and mechanism, with special attention given to the business as mission (BAM) mechanism in Brazil. Two research techniques were utilized: 1) archival research in order to define and describe both the doxological components (metanarrative, mission and motivation) and the BAM mechanism; and 2) case study method in order to examine the motivations that drive successful Brazilian Christian entrepreneurs to start Kingdom companies.

The researcher identified three key metanarrative frameworks for understanding Scripture and redemptive history: the Nature of God (NOG), the Kingdom …

Small Spinning Landers For Solar System Exploration Missions, Rex Ridenoure, Joe Cardin, Chris Day Aug 2014

Small Spinning Landers For Solar System Exploration Missions, Rex Ridenoure, Joe Cardin, Chris Day

Small Satellite Conference

The spinning lander is a novel concept for safely landing and hopping on unimproved surfaces virtually anywhere in the solar system. It was first conceived in the early 1960s by satellite industry pioneer Harold Rosen, but not applied to an actual mission design until 2007-2008 as a Google Lunar XPRIZE team entry. Key to this new lander concept is the dual-spin spacecraft system approach developed and matured by Rosen and his Hughes Space & Communications, Inc. team starting in the late 1960s—a simple, scalable spacecraft architecture which dominated the communications satellite arena for nearly 25 years. Rosen’s GLXP entry featured …

Overview Of Instruments For Investigating Dust Interactions On Small Solar System Bodies By Landers And Rovers, Ryan L. Kobrick, Jeffrey A. Hoffman, Kenneth W. Street Jr., Douglas L. Rickman

Publications

Small Solar System bodies such as asteroids, comets and Mars' moons Phobos and Deimos have relatively unknown regolith environments. It is hypothesized that dust preserved in the regolith on the surfaces will have similar mechanical properties to lunar dust because of similar formation processes from micrometeoric bombardment, low relative gravity for slow settling times, and virtually no weathering because there is no atmosphere.

"The Popular Thing To Do" Examining Young Evangelicals' Motivations For Short-Term Mission Trips, Kelsey Mcghee Jun 2014

"The Popular Thing To Do" Examining Young Evangelicals' Motivations For Short-Term Mission Trips, Kelsey Mcghee

Honors College Theses

Evangelical Christians are taking short-term mission trips in ever increasing numbers, with several billion dollars a year invested in these efforts. This thesis set out to understand if there was a gender difference in the motivations of young evangelical men and women, ages 14-25, who participate in short-term mission trips. Using historical perspectives on missions and functionalism, this thesis explores the motivations of recent short-term missionaries. I expected a large difference between the genders based on historical narratives of men and women missionaries, as well as my own experience in missions. However, after interviewing seventeen people, ten women and seven …

Basra's High Hope: An American Missionary School In Iraq During The World War Era, Israa Alhassani May 2014

Basra's High Hope: An American Missionary School In Iraq During The World War Era, Israa Alhassani

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Basra, on the eve of WWI, was an Ottoman wilaya with a diverse society. During this period, Basra became a platform for two major British military campaigns. In 1914, Britain occupied the city as a precautionary measure to protect British interests in the region after the declaration of war against the Ottoman Empire. After eleven years of a British mandate, Basra became part of an independent country in 1932. In 1941, upon the success of a German-supported coup in Baghdad against the British-aided monarchy, Britain moved its forces to occupy Basra for a second time. During this period of imperial …

The Effect Of Diffusion On The Evaporation Rate Of Liquid Hydrocarbons Using Nanosediments In Lakes On Titan, Tyler M. Scogin May 2014

The Effect Of Diffusion On The Evaporation Rate Of Liquid Hydrocarbons Using Nanosediments In Lakes On Titan, Tyler M. Scogin

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Titan, Saturn's largest moon, has a "hydrological" cycle with hydrocarbons including methane and ethane in its atmosphere, and may be analogous to a frozen prebiotic Earth. Tholins created in Titan's atmosphere fall to the surface and interact with these liquid hydrocarbons. As a surrogate for tholins, nanophase silica was used as the nanosediment that interacts with the chosen liquids used to be analogous to those found on Titan. The effect on the evaporation rate of these liquids with and without the added silica was explored through 10 experiments.

Feasibilty Of Very Large Sparse Aperture Depolyable Antennas, Jason C. Heller Mar 2014

Feasibilty Of Very Large Sparse Aperture Depolyable Antennas, Jason C. Heller

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research is to explore the technical soundness of a very large, cross-shaped, parabolic, sparse aperture antenna extending 75 m from the bus. Specifically, describing the environment of the satellite, the effect of fabrication error on the structure and the remaining error budget for the system. The methodology involves creation of an ideal truss structure, to which all others are compared. A uniform distribution of proportional errors up to 1e-5 is introduced into the truss members' lengths and the models are subjected to a static Finite Element Analysis. A solution for the surface normal error is addressed …

Mission At And From The Margins: Patterns, Protagonists And Perspectives, Peniel Jesudason, Rufus Rajkumar, Joseph Prabhakar Dayam, I. P. Asheervadham

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

This volume revisits the 'hi-stories' of Mission from the 'bottom up' paying critical attention to people, perspectives and patterns that have often been elided in the construction of mission history. Focusing on the mission story of Christian churches in the South Indian state of Abdhra Pradesh, where Christianity is predominantly Dalit in its composition, this collection of essays, ushers its readers to re-shape their understanding of the landscape of mission history by drawing their attention to the silences and absences within pre-dominant historical accounts.

Called To Unity For The Sake Of Mission, John Gibaut, Knud Jorgenson Jan 2014

Called To Unity For The Sake Of Mission, John Gibaut, Knud Jorgenson

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

The purpose of this volume on mission and unity is to bring to public attention a broad overview on the history, development and perspectives on the role of mission in the pursuit of unity and the central biblical focus on unity as a prerequisite for an authentic witness in mission. The volume raises concrete questions: If the churches can agree on unity for mission, then does this visible unity go any further than the 'mutuality, partnership, collaboration and networking' of the Edinburgh 2010 Common Call? Does the call to unity or communion imply common touch stones, structures or ministries to …

Global Diasporas And Mission, Amos Yong, Chandler H. Im Jan 2014

Global Diasporas And Mission, Amos Yong, Chandler H. Im

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

The movement of people from their homelands is increasing exponentially. Such waves of both immigration and migration triggered by various factors have created new opportunities for the church and its mission. This volume explores such global diasporas from both ecclesiological and missiological perspectives. Its various case studies invite reconsideration of the missionary and evangelistic task of the church in response to contemporary global dynamics. The image of the dandelion on the front cover symbolizes diverse people groups dispersed around the globe, even as the Christian imagination views such dispersal as being carried by the winds of the Holy Spirit.
