Extended-Release Hydrocodone: The Devil In Disguise Or Just Misunderstood?, Anne Schweighardt, Katherine Juba
Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications
Opioid abuse in the United States increased significantly over the past decade, leading to opioid-related deaths. Approval of Zohydro ER, a product that lacks an abuse-deterrent formulation, has provoked media controversy and aggressive legislative action from multiple stakeholders. Only the American Academy of Pain Management has released a position statement on this medication, and individual opinion varies. Additional single-entity extended-release hydrocodone formulations are in the pipeline, and Zohydro ER's limited clinical utility may make the controversy associated with its approval a moot point. As with other opioids, providers will need to assess individual patient risk versus benefit when prescribing Zohydro …

“Finishing Business” The Important Role Of The Psychosocial Worker In The Interdisciplinary Palliative Care Team: A Hypothetical Case, Merridy Rowe, Catherine Turnbull
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
The assessment of the palliative client and family caregivers by an interdisciplinary team comprising medical, nursing, and allied health allows for all aspects including the physical, social, and psychological and spiritual needs to be incorporated into care planning. This comprehensive level of planning for the care of the client and family caregivers can allow for a client to fulfil their own definition of a good death, or dying well. Whilst the provision of psychosocial support can be the seen as the role of the social worker in the team, all members of the palliative care team, especially in rural and …
Palliative Care And Hospice Community Education, Mary Castang
Palliative Care And Hospice Community Education, Mary Castang
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Executive Summary Palliative Care and Hospice Community Education Problem In the researcher's home hospice practice, a need for community education regarding Palliative Care and Hospice is recognized. Patients and family members need information about End of Life (EOL) care options prior to the urgency of a crisis. According to Szirony, Oopko, Masiulaniec and Binder (2011) many patients and family members learn of hospice and palliative care services only after admission into a program. The decision to sign in to a program reflects their perception of there being no other choice rather than understanding the options and benefits (Szirony, et al, …

Anticipatory Grief And Compassion Fatigue: Definitions And Guidelines For Caregivers, Mary Kay Haupt
Anticipatory Grief And Compassion Fatigue: Definitions And Guidelines For Caregivers, Mary Kay Haupt
Counselor Education Capstones
Anticipatory grief is characterized as grief that an individual experiences prior to an expected loss of a terminally ill loved one. Anticipatory grief can occur in advance of losses other than death, and is considered a normal grief reaction. Anticipatory grief follows a distinct pattern, though no two individuals process grief the same way. The beneficial effects of anticipatory mourning have prompted caregivers to help individuals and families cope with future losses so that when such losses occur they will be more prepared for them. Professionals who serve as caregivers to those who will experience grief and loss have the …

All U.S. federal research funding triggers regulations to protect human subjects known as the Common Rule, a collaborative government effort that spans seventeen federal agencies. The Department of Health and Human Services has been in the process of re-evaluating the Common Rule comprehensively after decades of application and in response to the jolting advancement of biopharmaceutical science. The Common Rule designates specific groups as “vulnerable populations”—pregnant women, fetuses, children, prisoners, and those with serious mental comprehension challenges—and imposes heightened protections of them. This article addresses a question at the cornerstone of regulations to protect human subjects as biopharmaceutical research and …

U.S. federal research funding triggers regulations to protect human subjects known as the Common Rule, a collaborative government effort that spans seventeen federal agencies. The Department of Health and Human Services has been in the process of comprehensively reevaluating the Common Rule, which designates specific groups as “vulnerable populations”—pregnant women, fetuses, children, prisoners, and those with serious cognitive challenges—and imposes heightened protections of them. Given the vulnerabilities of those who confront end-of-life decisionmaking, should the regulatory standard be raised to more effectively protect the terminally ill from additional suffering and the loss of quality time with family and friends? Alternatively, …

Patients who live with a low quality of life and suffer from chronic pain may wish to end their suffering through different means such as active euthanasia, passive euthanasia, and physician-assisted suicide. These alternatives to end one’s own life create many ethical dilemmas for health care professionals, patients, and family members. Some of these decisions are forbidden in Islamic Religion, while others are permitted. In this paper, the authors will discuss how Islam looks at these decisions. Knowing about how Islam deals with such decisions will be of great help for health care providers who take care of Muslim patients. …

Reaching The End : An Exploration Of Attachment And Existential Theory As A Path To Assist In The Dying Process, Jillian Debenedetto
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
In this exploration I will utilize the theory of Attachment as well as Existential Theory to assist in expounding upon available paths to assist elderly individuals in their journey at the end of life. I will present an overview of the two selected theories of Attachment as well as Existential Theory and argue that such approaches honor the venerable end stage of life. A discussion pertaining to these two theories will shed light on the question of how a clinician can seek to improve the quality of life for an individual during the end of life process and therefore assist …

The Making Of A Myth: Unreliable Data On Access To Palliative Care In Canada, Jocelyn Downie, Georgia Lloyd-Smith
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
Assisted death is now the subject of conversation in the media, in public meetings, and around kitchen tables across the country. A frequent part of many conversations about assisted death law reform is access to quality palliative care in Canada. Throughout the literature and other forms of media, the claim is made that only 16-30% of Canadians have access to palliative care (or, its derivative, 70% are without access). The “16-30%” claim has been widely accepted as a fact. But is it, in fact, true? We are driven to the conclusion that the oft-repeated claim that only 16-30% of Canadians …

A survey was designed, based on past research, to explore the opinions of social workers regarding PAS depending on the social worker's age, gender, religion, years in the field, state in which they practice, and professional experience with those at the end of life. This study was conducted through an online quantitative survey developed by the authors using mostly questions from a variety of past studies. Fifty-five practicing social workers or social work students over the age of 18 …
The Effect Of Family Centered Music Therapy Sessions On Relaxation States Of Informal Caregivers Of Hospice And Palliative Care Patients, Adrienne Claire Steiner
The Effect Of Family Centered Music Therapy Sessions On Relaxation States Of Informal Caregivers Of Hospice And Palliative Care Patients, Adrienne Claire Steiner
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Advances in healthcare and shifts toward patient and family centered care have allowed healthcare professionals to focus on the entirety of a patient and what affects his/her health. In noting such changes, and in consideration of what affects quality of life, findings in the literature address the physiological and physiological differences between those who are caregivers versus those who are not caregivers. This study investigated the relaxation state of those who were considered informal caregivers of hospice and palliative patients in an acute hospitalized setting.
A family centered music therapy session was conducted utilizing a music-‐ assisted relaxation intervention incorporating …
“Comfort, Comfort My People”: A Qualitative Study Examining Dying Persons’ And Their Caregivers’ Experience Of Spiritual Care As An Aid To Having A Good Death In Grey And Bruce Counties, Ontario, Dwight Biggs
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Dying persons and their caregivers encounter several needs as part of the dying journey. Spiritual care, when offered effectively, can help address many of those needs. When people’s needs are fulfilled, their suffering is lessened and there is an increased possibility of them experiencing a good death. However, when spiritual care is not offered effectively, dying persons and their caregivers often continue to face unalleviated suffering which limits their ability to experience a good death. This research project explores how dying persons and their caregivers experience spiritual care in their homes as an aid to dying well and having a …
