Efficacy Of Female Rat Models In Translational Cardiovascular Aging Research, Kevin M. Rice, J. C. Fannin, C. Gillette, Eric Blough Dec 2014

Efficacy Of Female Rat Models In Translational Cardiovascular Aging Research, Kevin M. Rice, J. C. Fannin, C. Gillette, Eric Blough

Pharmaceutical Science and Research

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the United States. Aging is a primary risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease as well as cardiovascular-related morbidity and mortality. Aging is a universal process that all humans undergo; however, research in aging is limited by cost and time constraints. Therefore, most research in aging has been done in primates and rodents; however it is unknown how well the effects of aging in rat models translate into humans. To compound the complication of aging gender has also been indicated as a risk factor for various cardiovascular diseases. …

Religious Faith And Depression Among Child Welfare Involved Mothers With Young Children, Elissa E. Madden, Donna M. Aguiniga, Karen T. Zellmann Dec 2014

Religious Faith And Depression Among Child Welfare Involved Mothers With Young Children, Elissa E. Madden, Donna M. Aguiniga, Karen T. Zellmann

Journal of Family Strengths

Using secondary data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Survey of New Parents, this study explores the association between religion and depression in a nationwide sample of mothers with young children who were referred to Child Protective Services (N=344). The findings suggest that, when controlling for other contextual factors, mothers who viewed their religious faith as a guide for their daily lives were more than three times as likely to have experienced depression within the last year. Additionally, mothers who attended religious services a few times a month were significantly less likely to experience depression than mothers who reported …

Racial Disproportionality In The Foster Care System In Texas:, Monit Cheung, Patrick Leung Dec 2014

Racial Disproportionality In The Foster Care System In Texas:, Monit Cheung, Patrick Leung

Journal of Family Strengths

This study analyzes the demographic characteristics of foster care children under the conservatorship of the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) in Texas from 2002 to 2013. Using one state as an example, the progress charting data in 12 years demonstrates the need to set up a national agenda on closing the gap in racial disproportionality. While the data reveal an increase of Hispanic children in foster care from 33.6% in 2002 to 41.3% in 2013, in terms of disproportionality, the ratio index for Hispanic children has been much lower (0.83) than that for African American children (2.33) over …

Biomechanical Analysis Of Lower Limb Muscle Power In Elderly Individuals, I-Chung Cheng, Shun-Hwa Wei, Fu-Kong Lieu, Pei-Chen Tsai Dec 2014

Biomechanical Analysis Of Lower Limb Muscle Power In Elderly Individuals, I-Chung Cheng, Shun-Hwa Wei, Fu-Kong Lieu, Pei-Chen Tsai

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Background: The aging process may contribute to a decrease in lower extremity function in elderly individuals, which in turn often causes a functional decrease in activities of daily living, loss in quality of life, and increase in risk of accidental falls. In the last few decades, numerous studies in elderly individuals have reported the relation between a high incidence of accidental falls and inadequate muscle strength. Unfortunately, few studies have provided insight about their individual muscle performance, such as the explosive muscle power, from a biomechanical prospective. Quantitative analysis of the sit- to- stand (STS) ability is a useful method …

The Method Of Primary Cell Culture Of Rat's Gastrocnemius Muscle And Comparison Between Skeletal Muscle Cell And Tendon Cell In Protein Expressions Of Myogenic Factor 5, Paired Box 7, And Desmin, Ying-Hsun Chen, Wen-Chung Tsai, Miao-Sui Lin, Jong-Hwei S. Pang, Kuan-Chen Pan, Tung-Yang Yu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Skeletal muscle cells generate force and produce joint movement and are easily injured. A good understanding of the biological, physiological, and pathological mechanisms of skeletal muscle cells is essential for exploring the regulation of muscle repair, which occurs in the event of an injury. A method for reproducing skeletal muscle cells is essential for studying skeletal muscles. Most studies use cell lines as study models because these are capable of reproducing numerous times. However, the function of cell lines is markedly deviated from that of normal cells. Skeletal muscle cells from primary cell culture more closely represent muscle cells in …

Obesity is a major health problem in the USA, especially in minority populations over the age of 60 years, and the aging process can cause adverse effects on physical function. Previous research has shown that Tai Chi, resistance training (RT), and diet result in overall health improvements. However, the combination of these specific interventions has yet to be translated to obese olderwomen in an urban setting. The purpose of this studywas to examine a combined intervention on the primary outcomes of physical function and body composition. Using a nonrandomized design, 26 obese women (65.2 ± 8.1 years) completed a 12-week intervention; participants …

Hidden Cost Of Conflict: An Interdisciplinary Examination Between Family Law, Therapeutic Jurisprudence, Justice, And Work Productivity For Employed Adults, Lisa M. Burton

Open Access Dissertations

There is limited understanding of the experience of adults going through the court system to obtain a divorce. Linking the legal process of divorce for employed adults to workplace productivity has not been researched. The method of adjudication of divorce has not been linked to health or occupational outcomes. Results could have compelling implications for corporate work/life programs and public policy. Individuals experiencing heavy demands by either family responsibilities or work demands are at risk for poor mental and physical health outcomes. The role the legal system plays in the variability of stress reactions is unknown. Interdisciplinary knowledge may be …

A New Cecal Slurry Preparation Protocol With Improved Long-Term Reproducibility For Animal Models Of Sepsis, Marlene E. Starr, Allison M. Steele, Mizuki Saito, Bill J. Hacker, B. Mark Evers, Hiroshi Saito Dec 2014

A New Cecal Slurry Preparation Protocol With Improved Long-Term Reproducibility For Animal Models Of Sepsis, Marlene E. Starr, Allison M. Steele, Mizuki Saito, Bill J. Hacker, B. Mark Evers, Hiroshi Saito

Surgery Faculty Publications

Sepsis, a life-threatening systemic inflammatory response syndrome induced by infection, is widely studied using laboratory animal models. While cecal-ligation and puncture (CLP) is considered the gold standard model for sepsis research, it may not be preferable for experiments comparing animals of different size or under different dietary regimens. By comparing cecum size, shape, and cecal content characteristics in mice under different experimental conditions (aging, diabetes, pancreatitis), we show that cecum variability could be problematic for some CLP experiments. The cecal slurry (CS) injection model, in which the cecal contents of a laboratory animal are injected intraperitoneally to other animals, is …

Low Mineral Density Of A Weight-Bearing Bone Among Adult Women In A High Fertility Population, Jonathan Stieglitz, Bret Beheim, Benjamin C. Trumble, Felicia C. Madimenos, Hillard Kaplan, Michael Gurven Dec 2014

Low Mineral Density Of A Weight-Bearing Bone Among Adult Women In A High Fertility Population, Jonathan Stieglitz, Bret Beheim, Benjamin C. Trumble, Felicia C. Madimenos, Hillard Kaplan, Michael Gurven

ESI Publications

Evolutionary theories of aging posit that greater reproductive effort causes somatic decline given a fundamental trade-off between investing energy in reproduction and repair. Few studies in high fertility human populations support this hypothesis, and problems of phenotypic correlation can obscure the expected trade-off between reproduction and somatic condition. This cross-sectional study investigates whether greater reproductive effort is associated with reduced calcaneal bone mineral density (BMD) among female Tsimane forager-farmers of lowland Bolivia. We also investigate whether female Tsimane BMD values are lower than sex- and age-matched US reference values, despite the fact that Tsimane engage in higher physical activity levels …

Evidence Based Falls Management Program In The Nursing Home, Deloris Jacobs Dec 2014

Evidence Based Falls Management Program In The Nursing Home, Deloris Jacobs

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

The cost of fall injuries for both nursing homes and patients can be staggering. Facilities can incur large financial penalties following notices of severe deficiencies from regulatory agencies and will incur substantial legal fees in the event of a wrongful injury or death lawsuit. Patients injured in falls are at risk of increased financial costs for care in the nursing home as well as a lower quality of life. They are likely to incur co-pay or coinsurance costs for care by physicians and other professional services, and costs for rehabilitative services, out of pocket expenses, medical equipment, prescription drugs, and …

Implementation And Evaluation Of An Oral Hygiene Program In Long-Term Care, Lawrence P. Lemos Dec 2014

Implementation And Evaluation Of An Oral Hygiene Program In Long-Term Care, Lawrence P. Lemos

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

A review of the literature focusing on oral care within long-term care (LTC) suggests positive resident care outcomes occur when standardized practices are employed. Studies of staff education programs, trained oral hygiene aides, and dental hygienists working within LTC, have linked regular oral hygiene practices to decreased pneumonia rates. While these studies make the connection between good oral hygiene and reducing risk for pneumonia, best practices focused on implementing and sustaining an oral hygiene program in LTC facilities are lacking. The aim of this quality improvement project was to ensure that dependent residents in LTC receive assistance with daily oral …

Quality Internships For Part-Time Graduate Students: An Exploratory Study Of A University/Agency Partnership, Irene S. Mcclatchey, Alan Kirk Dec 2014

Quality Internships For Part-Time Graduate Students: An Exploratory Study Of A University/Agency Partnership, Irene S. Mcclatchey, Alan Kirk

PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement

The university student population is changing and more students choose to complete graduate programs while working full-time and going to school part-time. Part-time graduate students, who are working towards a professional degree in the human services domain often struggle finding quality internship placements that are available during non-regular office hours. At the same time, non-profit organizations, especially those who are small and lesser known, struggle to recruit, train, and retain high quality volunteers. This is especially problematic since the number of non-profits is increasing and the number of volunteers decreasing. To look for answers both university part-time programs and non-profits …

Intergenerational Service-Learning With Exercise Science Students, Mckinze R. Vowels

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Exercise science professionals often work with older adults to help maintain function and independence. Ageism may begin during undergraduate training, as most have not interacted with older adults. Intergenerational service-learning (ISL) may be a useful pedagogy to facilitate interactions with older adults. PURPOSE: To determine if exercise science students’ knowledge of older adults and ageism are significantly improved by incorporating ISL into an exercise science course. METHODS: Students (n =10) enrolled in Exercise and Aging and from two additional exercise science courses (n = 17) completed pre and post assessments of attitudes towards and knowledge of older adults. Students implemented …

A Mitochondrial Haplogroup Is Associated With Decreased Longevity In A Historic New World Population, Loredana Castri, Donata Luiselli, Davide Pettener, Mauricio Melendez-Obando, Ramón Villegas-Palma, Ramiro Barrantes, Lorena Madrigal

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Interest in mitochondrial influences on extended longevity has been mounting, as demonstrated by a growing literature. Such work has demonstrated that some haplogroups are associated with increased longevity and that such associations are population-specific. Most previous work however, suffers from the methodological shortcoming that long-lived individuals are compared with “controls” who are born decades after the aged individuals were. The only true controls of the elderly are people who were born on the same time period, but who did not have extended longevity. Here we present results of a study in which we are able to test if longevity is …
